Overview
Notes
Battlestars are a heavy class of human-controlled Colonial warship, that combine the functions of aircraft carrier and battle cruiser.
*Battlestar Wiki maintains official information on the Battlestar Galactica officially-licensed episodes, movies, and publications only. Fan fiction sources that discuss other ships (particularly fan-based clubs that use ship "names") are not permitted in this wiki.

The first five battlestars were laid down shortly before the start of the first Cylon War and saw action in the early years of the war (Mini-Series). Seven further battlestars were constructed during the war (Zoic), leading to a total fleet size of 12, one battlestar representing each of the colony worlds (Mini-Series).
*A common fan fiction belief is that the Original Series battlestar Columbia was also the class name for these battlestars. No official sources confirm this point.

All the original battlestar vessels deliberately avoided the use of highly-integrated or networked computer systems, as the Cylons were able to infiltrate and subvert such systems, disabling Colonial defensive capabilities (Mini-Series).
:For more on what constitutes an official source, see Battlestar Wiki:Citation Jihad.

Following the end of the war, the battlestars remained in service, and their numbers increased. However, later vessels did include networked systems (Mini-Series), and while the term "battlestar" was used to describe these newer vessels, it is unclear as to whether they were the same overall size and form as the original battlestars. Several of the original 12 vessels were also upgraded (Mini-Series), with the exception of the battlestar Galactica, which retained its original command and control systems at the insistence of Commander William Adama
disambig

Possibly as a result of her "original" condition, the Galactica was selected to become a living museum / educational centre once decommissioned (Mini-Series). Following the surprise attack by the Cylons on the Colonials, the Galactica was left as the only battlestar capable of mounting a counter-offensive, although she was initially hampered by the lack of any defensive munitions on-board.

Battlestars are space-going leviathans. Some 4,500ft  in length (Zoic), they combine the role of a modern airacraft carrier with that of a battle cruiser. Housing some 140-180 "Viper" space superiority fighters arranged in 6-8 squadrons of 20 apiece, and with 20 reserve aircraft (fan estimate), a fully-armed battlestar is capable of a wide range of offensive actions, while her defensive armaments ensure she is fully capable of both protecting herself from attack, and of engaging an enemy at close quarters.

Despite their massive size, battlestars are extremely manoeuvrable (Mini-Series - docking at Ragnar Anchorage) and, in the right circumstances, partially atmosphere-capable (Mini-Series - docking at Ragnar Anchorage). Their FTL systems are capable of incredibly-accurate jumps, able to  place them precisely in synchronous orbit above an point on a planet (Mini-Series)and of placing them in the midst of debris fields, such as an asteroid belt, without risk of a devastating impact (The Hand of God).

Battlestars are intended to operate for long periods without resupply - their water purification capabilities alone mean that, barring an emergency or unforeseen event, they don't need to re-tank with water for several years (Water). They also appear capable of undertaking large-scale repairs following battle damage (Mini-Series), and may well have manufacturing / fabrication facilities on-board (Litmus).

* Viper squadrons comprise 20 vehicles apiece, generally supported by a single Raptor.
* The Raptors can also be used to deploy Colonial Marine detachments to the surface of planets or to storm other vessels. Raptors are equipped with a docking collar and accessway in their undersides for this latter role (Bastille Day)
* Viper operations are overseen by the CAG - Commander Air Group, the most senior pilot aboard a battlestar.
* An appreciation of the size of a battlestar can be gleaned from the following:
** A battlestar is over 4 times longer than a Nimitz-class US Navy nuclear-powered aircraft carrier
** The flight pod of a battlestar is almost twice the length of a Nimitz class carrier, is some 150ft wider and is approximately as tall as a Nimitz class carrier measured from the waterline to the top of the carrier's communications and ELINT tower
** The beam of a battlestar's "alligator head" is as broad as a Nimitz-class carrier's flight deck is long
** Each of the nacelles of a battlestar's outer four sublight engines is large enough to house a Nimitz-class carrier.

Layout
The original battlestar design common to Galactica and her sister ships can be broken down into two main sections:

*Main Hull
*Flight Pods

Main Hull
This comprises the bulk of a battlestar, and can itself be divided into three sections:

*"Alligator head", containing the primary living space for the crew, recreational facilities, mess halls, shipboard operations centres (such as the CIC and Situation Room); water storage tanks
*Midships area: containing the pod retraction mechanisms, crossways linking the hanger pods for the transfer of equipment, Vipers, personnel, etc. All the necessary hoists for such transfers; main munitions stores and distribution mechnanisms to "local" munitions stores for main and secondary batteries; fabrication facilities; etc.
*Stern section: sublight engines, FTL drive coils, etc. Note that 4 of the sublight engines are mounted in distinctive nacelles of their own, with 2 more mounted between the nacelles, in the stern of the battlestar. The FTL drive coils appear to be mounted between the drive pods and between the hull-mounted sublight engines and the midships section of a battlestar.

The main hull houses all of a battlestar's offensive railguns, and also has a number of point-defence batteries mounted around it.

The manoeuvring thruster packs are located in the port / starboard bows of the "alligator head" (4 thrusters apiece), and on the poert / starboard extremities of the four sublight engine nacelles (2 "packs" of 4 thrusters per nacelles).

Flight Pods
These are mounted on either side of the hull and contain a battlestar's offensive Viper force. During normal operations, they are extended away from the main hull. During FTL jumps, the pods are retracted against the hull, to provide a smaller cross-section for the battlestar during the jump itself.

*Each flight pod is approximately 2,000ft in length and has a maximum beam of some 360ft (fan estimates)
*Each pod comprises two main decks for flight operations: the upper landing bay, which extends the full length of the pod; and the lower launch bays, which provide some 40 launch tubes per pod (Zoic)
*The landing bay serves as a recovery area for incoming Vipers and Raptors, approaches are made from the stern. The preferred approach is a slow run into the hanger, prior to making a vertical landing on a defined landing area. However, in emergencies, "rolling" combat landings can be made, whichin a  Viper or Raptor approaches at speed and makes a running landing on its undercarriage
*The forward end of the landing bay also serves as a launch area for Raptors and shuttles
*Each hanger bay is large enough to accept a variety of other Colonial vessels, up to ans including vessels classified as "heavy" (such as Colonial Heavy 798.
*Docking collars are located throughout the upper sections of the landing bay in order to provide a pressurised connection between an docked vessel and the battlestar
*Pods additionally contain a number of a battlestar's point-defence railguns - one turret being mounted above each Viper launch tube, and others being set along the length of the pod itself
*The hanger bays in the pods are used as general dispersal areas for Vipers. There is potentially one hanger bay area per squadron of Vipers, giving each pod 4 bays apiece. The hanger bays are used for general maintenance of Vipers / Raptors and for re-arming operations, etc.
*Viper launch operations are overseen by a senior LSO, with a launch sepervisor directly responsible for each launch tube.

Other facilities within the pods include fuel storage areas for the Vipers / Raptors (and potentially for refeulling large vessels docked within the landing bays); munitions sotres for Viper weeaponry; munitions stores for the point-defence railguns; parts stores for maintaining Vipers and Raptors, etc.

The first battlestars were introduced into Colonial forces around 500 yahren into the war, and proved formidible when placed against the technically-superior Cylon basestars, although at least two battlestars were totally destroyed during significant battles, and a third, the Pegasus, was believed to have been destroyed at the Battle of Molecay.

* Atlantia - destroyed by the Cylons at Cimtar (Saga of a Star World)
* Acropolis - mentioned in connection with the attack at Cimtar, and so assumed to be one of the battlestars seen near the moon

* Triton - mentioned in connection with the attack at Cimtar, and so assumed to be one of the battlestars seen near the moon

Three additional battlestars - the Solaria, Cerberus and Prometheus were confirmed by the Costume Department at New West, and so may eventually have been referenced in the series.

Additional Information

Battlestars are warships built by the The Twelve Colonies of Man (colloquially known as "Colonials") in direct response to the generational war with the Cylons.

Overview

edit source

The first battlestars were introduced into Colonial forces around 500 yahren into the war, and proved formidable when placed against the technically-superior Cylon basestars. Many battlestars were totally destroyed during significant battles.

Known Battlestars

edit source

The battlestars[1] specifically mentioned in the Original Series are:

Myth of the Twelve Battlestars

edit source
Within fan circles, it has generally been assumed there were twelve original battlestars, given the number of Colonies. This appeared to be supported by Encyclopedia Galactica, a non-canonical publication released in 1979.[3] However, Glen A. Larson has stated that there was never any decision to have a specific number of battlestars, nor did the Original Series state that only twelve battlestars were built. During the series' run, only eight battlestars are seen or mentioned. Given the length of the Thousand-Yahren War, it seems likely that far more than twelve of these warships were constructed. How many of those ships remained before the Battle of Cimtar remain unstated, given losses at Battle of Cosmora Archipelago and Battle of Molecay that claimed battlestars and their support fleets.

For contrast, in the Re-imagined Series continuity, it is stated at the start of the Miniseries that twelve battlestars were initially built during the Cylon War. However, in the years of and after the Cylon War, an additional 120 battlestars of various classes were built in that continuity. Like its Original Series counterparts, almost all of these battlestars are destroyed in an elaborate Cylon subterfuge.

Capabilities

edit source
Battlestars boast impressive firepower and facilities, notably laser turrets and two launch bays that are capable of deploying Vipers into battle, propelled by launch tubes from the bay's outermost edges. Small laser turrets are placed on the launch bay struts themselves, in recesses at the side.

Notes on Dimensions and Scale

edit source

The length and beam figures given here are based on research carried out by Todd Boyce, a computer animator. There are many differing claims to the actual size of the original battlestars, ranging from some 2,000 feet[4] (the accepted length in a number of gaming systems) through to 2-3 miles in overall length.

Interviews with series creator Glen A. Larson and John Dykstra, the Visual Effects supervisor for the Original Series stated that the original Galactica was around a mile (1.6km) long. If the scale of the master model used for filming was set at 1/960, then the overall length of Galactica and her sister ships would be some 6,080ft (1,853m) - or one nautical mile. However, there is no confirmation available that 1/960 (1 inch = 80ft) was in fact the scale of the model, and the figures have thus been "back engineered" to fit the case. (It should be noted that Dykstra admitted that "[e]verything has to be exaggerated and the fill ratio of the screen has to be higher".[4])

Calculating a battlestar's size (credit: Phil Broad / Todd Boyce / Universal ABC)
Calculating a battlestar's size (credit: Phil Broad / Todd Boyce / Universal ABC)

In undertaking his work, Boyce utilized an established baseline for his calculations: the full-size mock-up of a Viper built for filming purposes. This mock-up measured some 28.5ft (9m) in length and a wingspan of some 12.5ft (4m), and formed a means by which Boyce could take key shots from various episodes, combine them with a scale model of Galactica and extrapolate a reasonably-consistent set of measurements. Thus: using film footage alone, Boyce was able to determine the length of Galactica to be some 4,143ft (1,263m), while use of a scale model produced a figure of some 4,166ft (1,270m): an acceptable difference of some 23ft (7m). What is more, these measurements appear consistent with the overall size of the Viper launch tubes, calculated at some 16ft (5m) in diameter, based on the wingspan of the full-size mock-up and images of Vipers being launched.

Given this degree of similarity in final calculations, these figures have been adopted here as the probable dimensions of the Original Series battlestars. However, in using these figures, it should be noted that:

  • Boyce also used a Cylon Raider as a benchmark for his calculations, and produced an overall length for Galactica at between 12,818ft (3,907m) and 21,210ft (6,465m) (2.4 and 4 miles). However, these measurements can be discounted on the grounds that:
    • They are initially based on assumed data: a shot of a Cylon Raider apparently "overflying" a Colonial Viper. However, no vertical separation distance between the two can be calculated, leading to a completely arbitrary figure (39ft/12m) for the wingspan of the Raider
    • These figures would yield launch tubes between some 50ft (15m) and 82ft (25m) in diameter - which is clearly not supported by film of Viper launches.
  • Boyce also used close-up shots of Viper launches to try and calculate the size of Galactica, and arrived at a figure of 2,712ft (827m), with the flight pods measuring 1,294ft (394m). However, these figures cannot be taken at face value, as they would render the Viper launch tubes with a 10.4ft (3m) diameter, making them too small to contain Vipers.

Note: As Boyce used the mock-up Viper he made a fatal assumption of it being exactly in scale with the actual on screen SFX model. That is unfortunately not the case. The mock-up Viper is smaller and less detailed, hence, cheaper and easier to construct. The difference is (exactly) 10% resulting in a length of 10 m and a wingspan of 4.5-5 m. This brings the Battlestar to about 1400 m. As BSG was made in light of Star Wars there is the possibility that it's size was intended to be the same as a Stardestoyer (1.5 km).

Note by the researcher: The research page points out that there are proportional differences between the mock-up and the studio model of the Viper, and that the mock-up is used because it had definitive dimensions whereas the filming miniature does not. The studio model is longer in proportion, but it is not necessarily taller or wider (which a second line of research investigated). More definitive research on the matter would need to take place before any claims such as it being "10% larger" could be verified since there are many factors to consider.

Likewise, a Raider overflying a Viper, while not a truly accurate means of measurement, does in fact set the largest dimensions the Raider could possibly be and is therefore useful in the research in demonstrating how the blueprint dimensions did not correspond with the on-screen evidence, at least in that shot. The 39ft measurement is the largest it could be in that shot which is far smaller than the mock-up would indicate. It should also be pointed out that a 39ft wingspan for the raider would yield an approximately 7ft wide cockpit - a bit tight for three Cylon Centurions to fit in.

Ultimately these are not "fatal assumptions" in the research, nor can research be "thrown out" since it is impossible to determine a truly accurate measurement of the ship with multiple valid sources of conflicting evidence. The research page clearly indicates that the reader is to decide for themselves what the results mean, and that like most science fiction shows, the effects are not suited to this kind of scrutiny.

Updated Notes on Dimensions

edit source

The one missing piece of information in studies like the one above is the actual diameter of the launch tube openings on the studio miniature. As someone who has spent years studying the filming model, and has designed and helped to build a very precise replica of it that is currently on display at the EMPSFM Science Fiction Museum in Seattle, Washington (see External Links section), I know these openings were 1/4 inch in diameter.

Having drawn the studio miniature in precise detail, including in 3D, I determined that a 27-28 foot Viper fits inside the tubes quite nicely if the studio model scales out to one nautical mile in length. In fact, the tubes scale out to 20 feet in diameter. Anything smaller would clip the wings of the Vipers. Don't forget there are pipes, bulkheads, and other details inside the round tubes that require clearance as well. So, I'm not quite sure how you could work it out if the ship were to be substantially smaller. Also, this value does coincide with John Dykstra's estimate that was quoted in vintage magazine articles of the period.

About The Filming Model

edit source

The ship model for Galactica was 6 feet in length and weighed 60 pounds. The model was built from various parts from hundreds of cannibalized plastic model kits, such as those from mini-scaled battleships, land vehicles and planes from the World War II era, to the point that "the crew had the feeling that, if it hadn't been for World War II, Galactica (the model) would not have been possible".[4]

Battlestars are constructed in planetary orbit. Battlestars have a maximum range of 500 light-yahren before refueling, although this can be affected by high-speed maneuvering and the use of weapons, which are powered by the same fuel source as the engines.

Battlestars contain eight squadrons of Vipers, in addition to being armed with "banks of turret-mounted laser cannon, strategically mounted to defend most vital areas of the ship from head-on attack" and "space-to-space torpedoes" capable of destroying larger enemy craft.

For shielding, battlestars use a "powerful radiation field" capable of deflecting most laser attacks and heavy armor plating to dampen explosive ordnance, like torpedoes or missiles. Furthermore, battlestars are split into segments that can be sealed should the hull be compromised, so the entire ship is not lost.

For propulsion, battlestars "are powered to sub-light speeds by twin solium energizers that convert matter directly into propulsive force. Tylium thrusters boost the ship past the light barrier; on full power, speeds of light times ten have been attained."

Battlestars are crewed by 500 people and consists of various facilities, "including a 100 bed life-station, a fully equipped rejuvenation center and a variable-gravity gymnasium".[5]

Additional Information

The Galactica-type battlestar[6], erroneously known as a Jupiter-class in apocrypha works, is a Colonial capital ship that combines the functions of an aircraft carrier and a battleship[7]. It was designed and deployed after the outbreak of hostilities between the Cylons and Colonials. A few ships of this class remain in service over 40 years after the end of the Cylon War; however, most were retired shortly after the War ended.

Galactica in its original configuration (TRS: "Blood and Chrome").

The class was designed and deployed by the Colonial Fleet in the early days of the First Cylon War, quite possibly as part of the Articles of Colonization, with 12 ships initially being built by, and representing, each of the Colonies (TRS: "Miniseries"). They included Galactica, Columbia, Athena, and Archeron. They formed the lead ships of Cylon War-era Battlestar Groups, and were represented in almost every major engagement of the War.

The original battlestars were space-going leviathans of more than 4,700 feet (1,440 meters) in length, designed to tackle the Cylon threat head on. They featured powerful gun batteries that ran up the center of the hull, numerous point defense turrets, and many missile silos, but their main show of force came from the multiple Viper stacks housed in the flight pods, which held up to a thousand Vipers. Initially, these stacks ran multiple stories, but were removed as the war died down (TRS: "Blood and Chrome" and "Razor Flashbacks").

Unfortunately, the class didn't hold up well to the Cylon threat, with only Galactica, Athena, and a third unnamed ship surviving the war. [8] Despite this, newer Galactica-type ships were built, with newer technologies, which still remained in service at the time of the Fall of the Colonies. However, Galactica was never upgraded, and remained in its Cylon War outfit at the time of its retirement 40 years after the war. [9]

Eventually, the class is phased out in favor of the smaller Valkyrie type battlestars, and the newer Mercury class battlestars, however was inadvertently survived by Galactica for nearly 5 years after the Fall of the Colonies.

The design common to Galactica and its sister ships can be broken down into two main sections: the main hull and the twin flight pods.

Main hull

edit source

This comprises the bulk of a battlestar and can itself be divided into three sections:

  • The fore section: Also known as the "alligator head," contains much of the living and crew areas, including the CIC, War Room, observation deck, , crew quarters, comfort facilities, pilots' rec room, sickbay, and numerous airlocks. This section also includes the main water tanks and water transfer hatches.
  • The mid section: Contains the main flight decks, flight pod retraction mechanisms, and service areas for the transfer of planes and pilots from flight pod, to flight pod. This section also houses the main gun batteries, missile launch tubes and support systems and corresponding ammunition stores (TRS: "Miniseries").
  • The stern section: Contains the ship's engine room, engine pods, FTL drives, and auxiliary facilities needed to maintain the ship's propulsion.

Flight pods

edit source
Main article: Flight pod

The flight pods serve as the most critical feature of the battlestar. They are designed to launch and retrieve support ships such as Vipers and Raptors, as well as various other support craft such as Thera Sita, and even Colonial One. The pods on Galactica type are designed to retract into the main body of the ship, primarily for FTL operations, and support ship transfers. Under normal operations, the pods are expanded out to provide a safe landing and support area for the ship's CAP. The pods also feature airlocks that can be used to dock the entire battlestar to a drydock or an orbital station for the safe transfer of personnel and equipment.

Each flight pod comprises two main decks for flight operations: the upper landing bay, which extends the full length of the pod, and the lower launch bays, which provide some 40 launch tubes per pod. The hangar deck, located under the landing bay, is used for maintenance, repair, refueling, rearming, and launch operations and runs the length of the flight pod.

Landing approaches are made from the stern. The preferred approach is a slow run into the landing bay, prior to making a vertical landing on a defined landing area (TRS: "Act of Contrition"). However, in emergencies, combat landings can be made, in which a craft approaches and lands at high speed on its landing skids (TRS: "Miniseries").

Propulsion

edit source
Galactica with all six sublight engines engaged (TRS: "33")
Main article: Propulsion in the Re-imagined Series

A Galactica-type battlestar relies on six sublight engines for primary thrust, alongside 40 maneuvering engines in 10 clusters of 4 situated at key points around the ship. The primary sublight engines are arranged with four main units at the stern, one on each corner with an additional two units in the center [10] A Galactica-type can run with only the four corner engines engaged to save fuel, but normally runs with all six. The sublight engines generate so much thrust, that despite its massive bulk, Galactica can reach flank speeds from a standstill almost instantaneously, as demonstrated during the Battle of the Colony (Daybreak, Part II)

Despite their massive size, battlestars are extremely maneuverable and can dock with space stations such as Ragnar Anchorage. Battlestars are not designed for atmospheric flight, although their hulls can manage a tenuous upper atmospheric storm like that surrounding the gas giant Ragnar (TRS: "Miniseries") and can survive a jump and subsequent freefall into the atmosphere of a habitable planet (TRS: "Exodus, Part II"). A battlestar's FTL systems are capable of accurate jumps, capable of placing it safely in the midst of an asteroid field and of placing it in synchronous orbit above a relatively close planet (TRS: "The Hand of God"), a dense fleet of ships (TRS: "Scattered"), or a planetary atmosphere. However, they are grossly inferior to Cylon systems in terms of safe range (TRS: "Kobol's Last Gleaming, Part I").

Endurance

edit source

Battlestars are intended to operate for long periods without re-supplying. Their water purification capabilities alone are so efficient that, barring an emergency or unforeseen event, a battlestar can operate "for several years before replenishing" (TRS: "Water"). They also appear capable of undertaking large-scale repairs following battle damage (TRS: Miniseries, "Water"). They have ammunition-manufacturing capabilities in the armory (TRS: "Epiphanies") and may have small general fabrication facilities (TRS: "Litmus"). In terms of food supplies, canned goods and vegetable stores are kept in titanium lockers (TRS: "Final Cut"). Battlestars are capable of continuing combat operations despite suffering massive damage, as evidenced by Galactica's continuing effectiveness at defending the fleet years after the first Cylon attack and following several punishing engagements (TRS: "He That Believeth in Me").

Computer systems

edit source
Main article: Computers in the Re-imagined Series

The twelve original battlestars deliberately avoided the use of networked primary computer systems during the Cylon War, as Cylon forces were adept at infiltrating and subverting such systems (TRS: "Miniseries").

On Galactica, in the post-Cylon War era, these primary computers remained isolated by practice on order of its last pre-Holocaust commanding officer, William Adama. This no-networks practice saved Galactica from the fate of its sister battlestars in the Fall of the Twelve Colonies as Galactica's no-network order meant that the CNP, installed in almost all Colonial Fleet vessels at the time, could not be used aboard Galactica as the CNP was designed for use with a computer network.

In one dire instance in the early months of their exodus, Galactica networks its primary computers temporarily to aid in computation speeds for jump calculations needed to find the missing civilian Fleet (TRS: "Scattered"), but it is not without consequence. One or more computers are cracked during a Cylon attack with a Cylon virus, which proves resistant to removal and (weeks later) threatens the operation of the battlestar until the computers' hard drives are erased and restored from pre-Fall backup sets (TRS: "Flight of the Phoenix").

The flak field from Galactica's large turrets (TRS: "Scattered")

Main article: Weapons in the Re-imagined Series
These are mounted on the dorsal and ventral surfaces of the main hull and the ventral surface of the bow. The two guns on each turret fire in tandem. They have been shown to be quite effective against targets like basestars (TRS: "Resurrection Ship, Part II"). These large guns are able to use both high-explosive anti-capital ship shells and FlaK ammunition. Additionally, the guns are able to engage in coordinated barrage strategies, such as salvo (and presumably, volley) fire.
Some of Galactica's point defense turrets
  • 514 smaller point-defense turrets (mounting 2 guns apiece)[12]
These are mounted on the flight pods and other surfaces. Each barrel fires explosive rounds in bursts.
  • Multiple nuclear warheads[13]
Deployed from 12 launch tubes mounted in the dorsal main hull (TRS: "The Eye of Jupiter").
  • Numerous Viper space-superiority fighters[14]
Even the latest Viper Mark VIIs remain compatible with this class's launch and recovery facilities.

During the First Cylon War, Galactica-type battlestars housed at least 5,000 crew and staff members (for a fully operational ship), with many of these being support personnel such as Viper pilots and Viper technicians. That number is drastically reduced following the Armistice, with many mustering out of service, and advancements in technology eliminating the need for certain service positions (for example, manned gun batteries). By the Fall of the Twelve Colonies, these and the newer Mercury-class battlestars have a crew of no more than 2,500 to 3,000 people. In Galactica's case, it is suggested the ship is understaffed due to its decommissioning; however, the crew is still able to operate the battlestar, even in a time of war, with little to no loss of function[16].

Life support

edit source

Approximately twelve oxygen re-circulation units are mounted throughout the ships of this class, which replenish oxygen as well as remove ("scrub") carbon dioxide from the air. These devices work continuously (TRS: "Final Cut").

Corridors and Causeways

edit source
A fire alarm panel used by Gaius Baltar (TRS: "Six Degrees of Separation").

Various corridors and causeways interconnect various rooms and areas aboard ship, lined with various panels, including intercommunication phones and other instrumentation.

Each hatch connecting a corridor to a room is typically labeled from the outside, and features unique identification markers to communicate positioning and direction aboard ship.

Fire alarm panels are placed for easy access in the event of a fire aboard ship. Gaius Baltar uses one such panel to temporarily evacuate the medlab in his attempt to erase manufactured evidence (TRS: "Six Degrees of Separation").

While Jupiter-class was adopted by Battlestar Galactica Deadlock in its storyline, it is in its own separate continuity that is not directly contributed to by the original creatives, despite its being a licensed work.

  7. The September 2006 Maxim issue contained a photoshoot, including this picture showing the weapons control room in the CIC. A printout on the table reads "Galactica class battlestar". This appears again in "Rapture" when William Adama arms the nuclear ordnance for deployment during a stand-off regarding the The Temple of Hopes.
  8. The series bible implies that the Athena was one of only three ships of Galactica's class to survive the war. As such it is likely that the Athena was one of the battlestars involved in "Operation Raptor Talon".
  9. Aaron Doral's comment at the start of the Miniseries, that Galactica is the "last of her kind," suggests that other Galactica type battlestars still in service use equipment that may be entirely different, regardless of the external configuration. Doral could also be referring to the lack of computer networks on Galactica as opposed to the rest of the fleet, which still indicates hardware upgrades during the vessels' lifetimes.
  10. Early episodes show that each engine unit has a singular thruster, yet Galactica in Daybreak Part II is shown to have a mix of small and large thrusters within each engine unit. This is likely a continuity error.
  11. These are rail guns (Battlestar Galactica RPG) 1 and 2 mark the position of these guns, with 8 on the dorsal and 12 on the ventral hull (of which 8 are mounted on the bow). Note that 2 turrets on either side of the bow are partially obscured and not marked in image 1.
  12. Number of the guns on the CGI model by Zoic, does not account for dorsally mounted and ventrally mounted guns
  13. As of the episode "Bastille Day," Galactica was equipped with five nuclear warheads. This may be lower than the typical number, since Galactica was in the process of being decommissioned and had already had most of its ammunition removed. If this is the case, we must conclude that Galactica was unable to reload its supply of nuclear arms at Ragnar Anchorage (a sensible proposition, given the ease with which purported arms smuggler Leoben Conoy was able to gain access to the facility).
  14. After the destruction of 20 Vipers during the Cylon attack, Galactica was still able to muster a 40-Viper strong defensive screen by combining their remaining squadron of Mk. VII Vipers with a full squadron of Mk. II Vipers from a museum exhibit in the starboard flight pod. This suggests that Galactica, with a single operational flight pod, was fielding two squadrons from it, and that when fully operational it could have fielded an additional two squadrons from the starboard pod.
  15. At the time of the Cylon attack, Galactica was apparently equipped with at least eight.
  16. According to a crew tally, Galactica is staffed by approximately 2,700 people at the time of its decommissioning. The full crew complement would be higher as has been indicated as roughly twice as high by some sources.

Additional Information

Mercury class battlestars are advanced Colonial capital warships/carriers of the Colonial Fleet, top-of-the-line vessels at the time of the Fall of the Twelve Colonies.

Apparently introduced some years after the First Cylon War, the Mercury class was designed to replace the aging Galactica type battlestars. It featured newer technologies, more automation, and could carry more Viper and Raptor support ships than its older predecessors. Despite the increase in capabilities, the Colonials seem to have more interest in producing the smaller Valkyrie types over the Mercury class, relegating the Mercury to a flagship/command role.

Generally speaking, this class compares to the older Galactica type battlestars in terms of overall specifications.

Main hull

edit source
  • The fore section: Also known as the "alligator head," contains much of the living -and crew areas, including the CIC.
  • The mid section: Contains the main flight decks, and aircraft service areas.
  • The stern section: Contains the ship's engine pods, FTL drives, and engineering facilities needed to maintain the ship's propulsion.

Flight pods

edit source
Main article: Flight pod

The Mercury class sports four flight pods of a newer and more advanced design. Two dorsal, and two ventral pods, with advanced gravity systems keeping them in sync. Vipers and Raptors are able to land both "right side up" and "upside down" in relation to the ship. The dual pods allow for greater Viper recovery during combat. The ships' hangar deck and launch tubes are located in between the "right side up," and "upside down" flight decks, and feature the same layout and design as seen on the older Galactica type battlestars. Despite advancements, these pods are still able to launch older Vipers, such as the Mk. II's. The Mercury-class also possesses Raptor launch tubes alongside its Viper launch tubes, enabling faster launch of scout craft compared to older battlestars.

The pods are also kept stationary and do not retract into the hull, allowing these vessels to jump out of a battle zone faster than their older counterparts (TRS: "The Captain's Hand").

Mercury class ships are equipped with 8 sublight engines attached to the outer hull, and group into clusters of four along the ventral and dorsal surfaces of the ship. Unlike their older counterparts, the Mercury class features advanced computer systems, including the Command Navigation Program developed by computer scientist Dr. Gaius Baltar. Designed to assist in advanced navigation techniques, the program was uploaded to all ships of this class sometime before the Fall of The Colonies. During the attacks, the Cylons were able to gain command privileges over the battlestar's functions and shut them down through a backdoor placed in this program.

  • 34 automated antiship gun turrets (mounting 2 guns apiece).
Gun batteries on the Mercury class are distributed all over the ship (TRS: "The Captain's Hand"), with the greatest concentration of large turrets found along the side of the ship, within the valley created by the upper and lower halves of the hull, and along the flight pods. Four are mounted on the underside of the upper hull on the ship's bow, below which sits four non-turreted large guns; these form the main forward batteries. Six turrets are mounted on each underside of the alligator head, grouped in pairs. There are also three turrets on the side of each flight pod, and two more turrets are mounted on the front and back of each flight pod. This amounts to a total of thirty-four main gun batteries. The turreted guns of the Mercury class have a higher rate of fire than Galactica's main guns when operating in flak mode, as demonstrated during a skirmish with Cylon War-era raiders (TRS: "Razor"). However, unlike Galactica, the Mercury class possesses no dorsal or ventral batteries, requiring it to angle its broadsides to the enemy in order to maximize the use of its firepower.
  • Numerous smaller point-defense turrets, located in between hull plates.
  • Numerous missile tubes.
  • Numerous Viper space superiority fighters.
An example of this class, Pegasus, carries a complement of 50 Raptors and 200 Viper Mark VII fighters (8 squadrons and two reserve squadrons color coded blue, red, green, yellow, orange, purple, black, white, and reserve squadrons gold and silver) [2].
The Mercury class battlestar has production facilities to build new Viper Mark VIIs from basic resources (TRS: "Scar").
  • Numerous Raptor multi-role vehicles.

The standard crew complement of a Mercury class battlestar is in excess of 2,500 (TRS: "Pegasus," "Razor"). Advancement in Colonial technology have made many positions manned on older vessels (such as gun batteries) automated, increasing response time and efficiency (though said batteries can be manually operated in the event of systems failure). Mercury class ships may be bigger than these older vessels, but they only need half the crew to operate then Galactica type battlestars during the First Cylon War.

Comparison of original series battlestar and Mercury class

The shape of the Mercury class resembles the Original Series battlestar closer than the Re-imagined Series' Galactica. It has eight engine pods, compared to Galactica's six. The pods aboard the Mercury class battlestar appear more directly integrated with its rear section, and its flight pods share the original angular shape.

The visual effects artist of the re-imagined Pegasus, Jose A. Perez, has commented that, "The new design was somewhat of a cross between the look of the original-series battlestars, and yet with elements of the new one. Aside from that, it has mostly hull plating (to absorb more damage), as opposed to the Galactica which shows more ribbing." Mr. Perez also commented that, "The harder edges (of the Pegasus) were intentional as well, to match the interior style of the sets more."

Additional Information

The Valkyrie type battlestar was already in use during the First Cylon War. The class is still in service and actively deployed over forty years later, before the Fall of the Colonies, and appear to make up a majority of the Colonial Fleet.

The Valkyrie type was deployed alongside a Galactica-type battlestar nearly fifty years before the Fall of the Colonies during the First Cylon War. At the time, they appeared to function as a support vessel in battlestar groups, and not as flagships (TRS: "Blood and Chrome"). In the years since, the type has become a forerunner in the Colonial Fleet, apparently outnumbering the Mercury class and remaining Galactica type battlestars. This type of battlestar is among the smallest ships in service in the post-war fleet, carrying fewer Vipers and Raptors than their larger counterparts. Despite this, their crews are not afraid to tackle threats head on, as three of them were seen attempting to engage Cylon basestars over Caprica before fleet communications went down (TRS: "The Plan").

Main hull

edit source

Measuring over 700 meters long, the Valkyrie type was about half the size of a Galactica-type battlestar. Overall, it shares the common battlestar design, consisting of an "alligator head," mid-section with flight pods attached, and aft the propulsion section, housing the main sublight engines. Possibly because of its smaller size, much of its main layout is exposed or semi-exposed on the underside of the ship, the FTL drive being the most prominent (TRS: "The Plan"). Physically, it was far more "jagged" than other battlestar classes, with sharp edges offset by curved lines. The hull was covered with batteries, missile launchers, and numerous hatches, giving it a sharp and streamlined but functional look.

Flight Pods

edit source
Forward shot of the Valkyrie, showing the underside, and Viper launch tubes.
Main article: Flight pod

The flight pods on the Valkyrie type serve the same purpose as with its larger counterparts. However, they are not able to carry as many planes, or allow larger vessels to dock inside, as with Galactica type or Mercury class. Despite being a Cylon War era design, the flight pods do not retract on this type, not even for FTL jumps.

The hangar deck facilities are smaller, and situated between the flight deck and the Viper launch tubes which run parallel to the pods. Having only three tubes per pod, the Valkyrie type has significantly less launching capabilities than its larger counterparts in the fleet. However, this doesn't preclude them from being assertively deployed, and may suggest a more offensively oriented approach to Viper launches as well as rapid deployment and recovery of CAPs. The tubes are also significantly longer than those of other battlestars. There are three separate points where Vipers could be lowered from the hangar into the tubes. It is possible that this allows for a much higher rate of launch (TRS: "Hero" and "The Plan").

Computer systems

Main article: Computers in the Re-imagined Series

The computer systems on the Valkyrie type were presumably non-networked in the early years of service. However, sometime during the forty years since the end of the Cylon War, these systems were upgraded, networked, and thus became accessible through the compromised Command Navigation Program like nearly all other ships in the Colonial Fleet. Thanks to this, the Cylons were able to take control of the battlestar's systems and shut them down before their attack.

Equipped with 20 small turrets, and 33 heavier (though much smaller than on other classes) ones, it has a huge number of guns. Presumably, there are an unknown number of point defense guns that would be located between the armor plating, much like the Mercury class. This class appears to rely more on missile weapons than other classes, with at least the larger turrets being capable of firing small anti-fighter missiles, and with at least 6 silos containing ship to ship missiles.
  • Small compliment of Viper space superiority fighters.
Size and disposition of the typical Valkyrie type airwing is never stated. However, in "The Plan", Valkyrie has at least 20 Vipers nearby. Yet, this is not evidence that this represents the full airwing.
  • Small compliment of Raptor multi-role vehicles.

Capabilities

edit source

Although a small hull (compared to battlestars like Pegasus or Galactica) these ships were heavily used. The type may have served a role similar to cruisers in modern navies, as they are shown being used for a number of missions, including patrols, covert operations, and even planetary protection. The smaller size, mass production, and apparent range of abilities presumably meant that it was perfect for a peacetime fleet, as they would be cheaper to produce than the larger Mercury class or Galactica types. The vulnerable FTL drive on the ventral hull suggest that the Valkyrie type was intended for a defensive role with other battlestars and Vipers protecting it, as offensive roles would risk destruction of its FTL drive. They may also have lacked the ability to produce Vipers, unlike the Mercury class.

  • In "Razor," a few Valkyrie types can be seen at the Scorpion Fleet Shipyards with what would appear to be a roll bar above the engine section. This feature is not present during the Cylon attack on the shipyards, leading to speculation that the ships seen with the roll bar were in fact different to those seen without it.
  • The Science of Battlestar Galactica names two battlestars as being docked at the Scorpion Fleet Shipyards during the attack. These ships, Bellerophon and Ramses, were thus likely examples of the Valkyrie type.

Additional Information

The Orion class battlestar was first developed and deployed sometime before or during the First Cylon War. Also known as a "pocket battlestar," "half-pint," or grimly as "one-way wonders," the class was specifically designed for special operations and covert missions.[1] These vessels were approximately quarter the size of full battlestars like Galactica and incorporated the latest stealth technology available during the First Cylon War (TRS: "Blood and Chrome").

The Orion class appears to be among the smaller ships in the Colonial Fleet, dwarfed even by the Valkyrie type. It may be the smallest known battlestar class to see service during the First Cylon War.

Design Philosophy

edit source

The Orion class was developed for missions deemed too dangerous for larger, more valuable battlestars. Their nickname "one-way wonders" reflected the grim reality that these ships were often assigned to extremely hazardous operations with low survival expectations.[2] The design philosophy emphasized functionality and stealth capabilities over crew comfort, resulting in vessels that could operate deep in enemy territory but at the cost of habitability.

Layout and Design

edit source

The Orion class featured a distinctive submarine-like design that was long, dark, and forbidding. Unlike bigger battlestars, the class did not share the same layout and design principles, instead being built into one main, streamlined body with torpedo-like tubes for launching Vipers positioned in the bow.[3]

  • The upper section: The upper section of the class features the main and secondary batteries, as well as a large conning tower, which features a forward looking viewing area. The class's engine room and sublight engines are housed in the back, above the landing bay. Two more sublight engines are housed in detached cowlings off the main boosters.
  • The lower section: The lower sections contain the main landing bay, Viper launch tubes, main communications tower assembly, fuel tanks, and houses another conning tower with forward facing viewing area.
  • Command and Control: The ship's CIC maintained a stealthier, more submarine-like feel compared to larger battlestars, with blue LEDs glowing coolly in the dark rather than the standard lighting found on other Colonial vessels.[4]

The Orion class features very little in the way of creature comforts, and suffers from dark, cramped, wet, and humid conditions. Numerous exposed pipes line the halls and CIC, which leave little standing and sitting room, leaving many of the crew to work in tight spots. This cramped design reflected the Colonial Fleet's adaptation to prolonged warfare and resource constraints during the later stages of the First Cylon War.

Stealth Capabilities

edit source
The aft of an Orion class, with the only landing bay accessible between the ship's sublight engines (TRS: "Blood and Chrome").

At least one Orion class ship, Osiris, was outfitted with a unique reflective metallic hull which acts as an inhibitor to Cylon DRADIS, and can operate in "stealth mode" within detection range for a short period without being seen. However, as soon as the ship powered its weapons and launched its fighters, the ship immediately became visible to enemy scanners, with the corresponding DRADIS signatures giving away the ship's position.[5] It is not known if this is a standard feature, or a special, one-off design.

Specifications

edit source

Propulsion

edit source
Main article: Propulsion in the Re-imagined Series

The Orion class features four main sublight boosters, two of which are housed in separate cowlings off the aft upper section. The class also features RCS thrusters at key points along the fore and aft hulls. These sublight engines are further augmented with an FTL engine capable of 12-league jumps.[6] The overall propulsion design, together with the small size of the Orion class ships, makes the class highly maneuverable, an important aspect of its defensive abilities.

Endurance

edit source

Unlike larger battlestars, the Orion class is not intended to be used on extended duration missions without the aid of a corresponding battlestar group. The class features limited weapons, which restrict its ability to fight Cylon capital ships. The battlestar Osiris lasted only a few minutes in combat with a much larger basestar before taking critical damage, demonstrating the class's vulnerability when faced with superior firepower (TRS: "Blood and Chrome").[7]

Armament

edit source
Main article: Weapons in the Re-imagined Series

Ships of this class are moderately armed, with at least thirty-two point defense batteries, twelve primary gun turrets, and multiple nuclear missile vertical launch systems, along with Raptors and the potential for a handful of Vipers. The Orion class ships are not normally outfitted with planes, and usually take on a complement from other battlestars. Compared with a basestar, the potential Viper complement is outnumbered ten to one by Raiders.[8]

Aircraft Operations

edit source
Osiris' hangar deck with Viper Mark IIIs on racks as seen circa 42 BCH (58YR).

The Orion class was designed to operate specialized Viper Mark III fighters equipped for both space combat and ground air support missions. These Mark III Vipers were sleeker than standard models, with bigger wings designed specifically for the class's special operations role.[9]

The ship's aft landing bay posed significant operational challenges. The flight deck was positioned directly behind the engines and was notably short, requiring precise timing and skill from pilots. Incoming craft risked becoming "ramp roast" if they came in too slow, or smashing into the reinforced bulkhead if they came in too fast. The bay was equipped with magnetic arrestors to help stop incoming Raptors and Vipers.[10]

The typical crew complement of an Orion class ship is about 150, excluding Viper pilots on detachment from other battlestars. The cramped conditions meant that operations were more constrained than on full-sized battlestars, with crew members often working in tight spaces with limited amenities.

Operational History

edit source

Ghost Fleet Operations

edit source

During the later stages of the First Cylon War, at least some Orion class vessels were incorporated into the Colonial Fleet's secret "ghost fleet"―ships that were officially reported as destroyed but continued to operate covertly in Cylon-controlled space. This fleet was assembled over more than a year as part of an effort to strike at the Cylons when and where they were least expecting it.[11]

The ghost fleet concept involved taking Colonial warships that had been heavily damaged but could be salvaged, then officially declaring them destroyed while secretly repairing them for covert operations. Personnel assigned to ghost fleet vessels witnessed their own death certificates, emphasizing the complete secrecy of their operations and their official non-existence (TRS: "Blood and Chrome").[12]

Production Notes

edit source

In the pre-production script for Blood and Chrome, the Orion class vessel is referred to as Reliant rather than Osiris, and contains significantly more detail about the class's design philosophy, operational limitations, and crew conditions than appears in the final production.[13] The script emphasizes the class's role as expendable assets for high-risk missions, reflected in their grim nickname "one-way wonders."

Additional Information

Galactica is one of a handful of combination warship/fighter carriers, known as battlestars, of the Twelve Colonies of Man. Its task is to defend the Colonies' citizens from the Cylon Empire. Galactica represented the Colonial planet of Caprica.

Galactica was first brought into service approximately mid-way during the Thousand Yahren War with the Cylons. Galactica served with distinction throughout the conflict.

Galactica and her sister ships combined the roles of battle cruiser and fighter carrier, having a massive offensive capability in terms of on-board weapons and Starhound Viper space superiority fighters.

As of "Saga of a Star World," Galactica is one of only five battlestars believed to have survived the long war, and was under the leadership of Commander Adama, a distinguished member of the Council of Twelve.

Galactica and sister battlestars before the abortive Peace Conference.

The remaining battlestars amass at Cimtar for what is believed by President Adar to be a historic peace treaty signing with the Cylons. However, with the villainous aid of one of the Council's members, Baltar, Adar ignores several apparent threats to the battlestars, leaving all of them open to a massive Cylon Raider attack. Galactica Viper pilots Apollo and Zac encounter the Raider fleet, and is able to warn Galactica of the ruse.

Unfortunately, Commander Adama is unable to convince Adar to launch their Viper squadrons or place the other battlestars on alert. Adama chooses to launch his squadrons against Adar's orders, feigning a battle drill, and activates the battlestar's shields to meet any attacks.

Realizing that the Raider fleet is far away from any locatable basestars to support them, and after seeing press reports of other Raider attacks on Caprica, Adama realizes that the Twelve Colonies themselves are in mortal danger from basestar attacks, and orders Galactica to speed away to Caprica. The battlestar arrives too late; a handful of humans survive the genocidal onslaught.

The battlestar fleet, including Adar's flagship, Atlantia, is destroyed, save Galactica, the sole surviving battlestar from the attack. Adama sends out word to all the survivors to take whatever space going vessel they can find and rendezvous with Galactica. Together, Galactica and 220 other Colonial ships leave Colonial space in search of Earth, the mythic home of the Thirteenth Tribe.

While initially believed to be the only battlestar to survive the Destruction of the Twelve Colonies, the battlestar Pegasus is found, but soon disappears in a pyrrhic mission (TOS: "The Living Legend, Part II").

Specifications

edit source
  • Galactica serves three main military functions provided by battlestars, operating as fighter carrier, a battleship and a mobile base of operations all in one massive platform [2]
  • Following the destruction of the Twelve Colonies, Galactica is forced to dramatically increase the number of crew she carries. Galactica is originally equipped with two Viper squadrons, Red and Blue. She acquires two additional squadrons, Silver Spar Squadron and Bronze Spar Squadron from the battlestar Pegasus, following that ship's disappearance in "The Living Legend, Part II," boosting Galactica's fighter strength to one hundred-fifty Vipers (as mentioned in "Fire in Space").
  • Galactica has her own heavy offensive batteries, consisting of 32 known turbo-lasers and fusion missiles.
  • The primary power aboard Colonial battlestars are provided by a combination of tylium energizers and advanced fusion reactors.
  • Galactica is able to travel at lightspeed, but rarely does so with her civilian Fleet in tow, as no other ships in the Fleet have lightspeed ability.
  • Galactica relies on scanners to locate and track objects around it. These scanners can be disabled by a significant hit to the bridge, leaving Galactica blind and forcing her to rely on her complement of Vipers to act as her "eyes" (TOS: "Fire in Space").
  • Galactica has an automated firefighting capability, managed by the boraton mist control center. In the event of its destruction all firefighting must be conducted manually. The fireleader coordinates the manual firefighting efforts (TOS: "Fire in Space").
  • Galactica makes use of gyros in order to maintain her orientation. If Apollo and Starbuck fail to detonate the explosives in exactly the planned pattern the ship's gyros would go wild (TOS: "Fire in Space").

Interior

During the course of the series, many parts of Galactica are shown.

Compartments and Sections
Compartment/Identification First Seen Notes Photo
Core command "Saga of a Star World" Most frequently seen is Galactica's command center, or bridge, which features a huge viewing window with a large shield that can be put in place, and a rotating command console from where the commander can observe operations.

Landing bay "Saga of a Star World" Bays where craft are received after landing. Larger crafts, such as shuttles, also launch from these bays.
Life science center "Saga of a Star World" Medical centers aboard ship.
Council chamber "Saga of a Star World" Council chambers where the Council of the Twelve convenes. At least two battlestars have this chamber, including Atlantia.
Ceremonial chamber "Lost Planet of the Gods, Part II" Location where ceremonies are held. There may be as few as two of these aboard ship.
Bachelor officer's quarters "Saga of a Star World" Unmarried Warriors and officers are quartered in bunk-like conditions.
Officer's Club "Lost Planet of the Gods, Part II" A lounge for officer's and Warriors.
Adama's quarters "Saga of a Star World" Personal office space that features at least one separate compartment for a private bed chamber.
Rejuvenation center "Fire in Space" Recreation area that features various entertainments, such as game boards.
Instructional center "Greetings From Earth" Compartment where children receive formal instruction in a communal classroom setting.
Commander's mess[3] "Lost Planet of the Gods, Part I" The commander's private dining area. Serina and Athena prepare a meal that is enjoyed by Adama and various family members, where Apollo announces his intention to marry Serina.
The ship is divided in to decks and sections designated with Greek letters. During "Fire in Space" the fire is initially out of control on alpha deck, in beta and gamma sections. Dialogue indicates that solium storage is located in or near gamma section. Sections are divided into compartments, with as many as 43 compartments in a section. A series of ducts run throughout the ship. These ducts are too small for humans to fit through, but large enough for Muffit (TOS: "Fire in Space").

  • Within fan circles, it has generally been assumed there were twelve original battlestars, given the number of Colonies. However, Glen A. Larson has stated that there was never any decision to have a specific number of battlestars, nor did the Original series state that there were only twelve battlestars built. Indeed, only eight battlestars were specifically mentioned the the course the series. Given the length of the Thousand Yahren War, it seems likely that far more than twelve of these warships were constructed.

Built during the early days of the Cylon War, Galactica (BS 75) is a veteran battlestar and was the last of its kind still in service, prior to its decommissioning by the Colonial Fleet. Officially decommissioned, Galactica was transformed into a museum ship as a memorial to the Cylon War, fought nearly forty years prior. Before decommissioning, Galactica was part of the 75th Colonial Battlestar Group.

Construction and First War Service (48 BCH (52YR)-60 BCH (40YR))

edit source

Galactica was one of the first twelve Galactica type battlestars to be constructed by the Colonials, each representing one of the twelve colonies; Galactica represented Caprica. While solidly built, various factors during Galactica's construction led to the shipyard "cutting corners" when it was originally built, with various components not completed to spec (TRS: "No Exit").

These battlestars were all designed with non-integrated computer systems to avoid the Cylons' demonstrated ability to override or subvert networked command and control systems early in the war (TRS: "Miniseries, Night 1"). Rather than technological sophistication, the battlestar depended on its sheer bulk and defensive / offensive capabilities to ward off any threats to itself or the Colonies.[4]

Entering service sometime prior to the tenth year of the War, Galactica's primary duties included planetary defense, and border patrol. During this period, Galactica operates as the flagship of a task force that includes its sister ships Columbia and Prometheus, demonstrating the Cylon forces "no quarter" in their operations.[5] It is unknown if the ship took part in any major engagement prior to this point, however it is known that the Colonials were facing heavy losses in the wake of Cylon advancements (TRS: "Blood and Chrome").

By the tenth year of the war, Galactica shows visible signs of the prolonged conflict, with its hull scarred in places from battle damage, though it remains no less imposing as a warship.[6] Under the command of Commander Silas Nash, Galactica serves as a training ground for new pilots like Ensign William Adama, while simultaneously conducting combat operations against automated Cylon defensive installations that have been "taking down our planes right and left."[7]

Two years later Galactica participated in Operation Raptor Talon, along with Columbia and one other battlestar of its class. It was successful in inflicting major damage to Cylon forces, but not before they were able to destroy Columbia. The battle ended in a draw, when it was announced the Cylons had signed an armistice agreement (TRS: "Razor").

  • In Blood and Chrome, Galactica is depicted with larger flight facilities than in the reimagined series; however, its overall flight pod design does not change, creating a continuity error. Since the pods do not change, it is impossible for the larger hangar deck to fit inside the pods, without a change in elevation of the above flight deck.
  • Also in Blood and Chrome, Galactica's cannons change position from the beginning of the production to the end. It is assumed this is a production mixup, and that two different models were produced, and both accidentally used. The second model used at the conclusion of the production is incomplete, and does not feature lightmaps.
  • In Starbuck's gun camera shots in "He That Believeth in Me" Galactica is supposedly a member of Battlestar Group 62.

Post War Service

edit source

Even before the end of the War, Galactica undergoes a refit that sees the removal of much of its armor, removal of the Viper stacks, and many of its dorsal primary batteries. Major changes to the layout of the CIC, hangar decks and infirmary are delivered at this point as well (TRS: "Razor Flashbacks"). [8] This would be Galactica 's last major refit prior to its decommissioning nearly 40 years later. Galactica never receives the networked computer or Baltar's CNP upgrades like its sister ships do.

Following the armistice, Galactica is regulated to intra-system duties, and has been known to take on "Coast Guard" roles involving the shipping sector, which limits the use of the ship's two FTL drives. Prior to Galactica's FTL jump to Ragnar Anchorage, its drives were not utilized in nearly twenty years (TRS: "Miniseries, Night 2").

Decommissioning

edit source
Main article: Battlestar Galactica Museum

With its active career drawing to a close, a decision was taken to retire Galactica and decommission it from service. The Colonial Fleet chose not to scrap the ship, but to turn it into a combination of living museum to the original Cylon War and an educational center, with the conversion being overseen by the vessel's final commander, William Adama.

At the time of its formal decommissioning ceremony, Galactica is stripped of all but one of its operational Viper Mark VII squadrons, its munitions are destroyed, and its starboard landing pod is converted into a pressurized museum which houses various items from the Cylon War while the launch facilities in the hangar deck below are permanently disabled. However, the ship's Viper munitions stores have not yet been offloaded and are still on the ship. The museum is about to open when the Cylons break the Armistice, and renew their hostilities with the Colonials.

Cylon Attack and Post-Fall Exodus (00 ACH (2000BYR)-04 ACH (2003BYR))

edit source

Surprise Attack

edit source
Galactica and the Fleet.

With the renewed and unexpected Cylon hostilities, Galactica is quickly brought back to combat condition and sorties a squadron of Mark IIs retrieved from its museum, engaging in its first battle with the Cylons in over forty years (all but one last Mark VII squadron were sent to Caprica for reassignment). It survives a direct hit by a tactical nuclear missile to the forward section of its port flight pod, and later jumps successfully to Ragnar Anchorage to replenish its empty ammunition stores at this strategic depot.

Galactica emerges from the anchorage and engages one basestar with its gun batteries, providing cover for a fleet of 75 civilian ships harboring survivors of the Twelve Colonies. Once the entire civilian fleet successfully jumps away, and as a second basestar approaches to join the battle, Galactica recovers its remaining Vipers and jumps to the rendezvous point beyond the Red Line, never to return to Colonial space (TRS: "Miniseries, Night 2").

Leading a Ragtag Fleet

edit source
Galactica and Pegasus work together during the Battle of the Resurrection Ship.

Since the exodus of the Colonials from their overrun homeworlds, Galactica becomes both protector and provider for the Fleet. It provides covering fire for the Fleet during Cylon attacks no fewer than 240 times (TRS: "33": "Act of Contrition"). The battlestar provides much of the Fleet with recycled water (TRS: "Water") and it is the primary source of medical care, where groups of civilians are periodically brought aboard for check-ups and treatment (TRS: "Litmus"). Galactica also undertakes internal policing duties within the Fleet (TRS: "Water" and "Bastille Day").

Galactica successfully goes on the offensive against the Cylons, after the capture of a tylium fuel mining and processing plant in the process. This plant is able to provide enough fuel for Galactica and the fleet for years (TRS: "The Hand of God").

The advanced battlestar Pegasus, commanded by Rear Admiral Helena Cain, joins Galactica approximately 6 months into their exodus (TRS: "Pegasus"). While integration into the fleet is far from smooth, the two battlestars work in unison to destroy two Cylon basestars, as well as a critical Cylon support ship known as a Resurrection Ship (TRS: "Resurrection Ship, Part II").

New Caprica

edit source

Following the founding of New Caprica, Galactica is assigned to the orbital defense force that protects the planet. During this time the majority of the crew are allowed to the surface in an effort to populate the planet and restore the human race, a majority of whom are seemingly convinced that the Cylons will never find New Caprica. The diminished crew inevitably results in standard maintenance becoming overlooked or ignored; basic military responses, such as the launching of alert fighters and routine training exercises become difficult to execute. One year following the founding of New Caprica, a fleet of Cylon ships jump into orbit of the planet. Severely limited in their abilities, Admiral Adama orders the defense fleet to jump away from New Caprica along with a handful of civilian ships still in orbit of the colony. (TRS: "Lay Down Your Burdens, Part II").

Galactica takes a pounding during the Battle of New Caprica.

Four months after their escape, Galactica's staff is still in the process of developing a rescue strategy with 16 training exercises having been completed, and a 17th underway when an accident causes its early cessation (TRS: "Occupation"). This forces both a change in strategy and the reformulation of a rescue plan to deal with personnel who have not seen conflict in 16 months (TRS: "Precipice" and "Exodus, Part I").

After coordinating with the New Caprica Resistance, Galactica leaves Pegasus to guard the space-bound members of humanity, while it initiates the Battle of New Caprica. Launching a squadron of Vipers and Raptors, who in turn launch drones to simulate the signatures of Pegasus and Galactica (leading the basestars guarding the planet to launch their Raider squadrons in pursuit), the real Galactica then executes an incredibly risky jump into New Caprica's upper atmosphere. Plummeting towards the ground of the colony from 99,000 feet and with re-entry gases buffeting and scorching the hull, Galactica then launches Blue Squadron while simultaneously calculating a jump back into space, successfully accomplishing both mere hundreds of feet from the ground. Jumping back into space, the atmospheric stresses of the jump take a toll on the battlestar. Electrical surges nearly blow out multiple displays in CIC, requiring a few moments for DRADIS to restore itself while extensive hull damage is apparent. However, the plan to hold off two basestars without their Raider cover while the colonists escape in their ships is complicated by the arrival of two additional basestars. In the subsequent battle, Galactica is bracketed by the four basestars and pummeled on all sides, losing maneuvering thrusters, and lacking the support of its Vipers leads to missile barrages disabling its FTL drives. Cornered by the Cylons and taking impacts all over the hull, to the point that the port side reaches structural limits and a forward dorsal battery is destroyed, Galactica faces certain destruction when Pegasus unexpectedly arrives. Pegasus's salvos draw the attention of the basestars away from Galactica, buying the crew time to bring its FTL drives back on-line, recover its planes, and escape (TRS: "Exodus, Part II"). Galactica bears the scars of the battle with significant scorching and dents to the hull, having sustained heavy damage. Repairs continue on the journey through the Ionian nebula, with heavy damage to secondary storage, and damage to one particular airlock nearly causing the deaths of Galen and Cally Tyrol during what they expected to be a quick repair of a hull micro-fracture (TRS: "Blood on the Scales" and "A Day in the Life").

Given the loss of Pegasus, Galactica now boasts a larger crew, Viper and Raptor complement, to the point where there are more pilots than there are ships to fly (TRS: "Torn"), although the training of new recruits is still ongoing (TRS: "Dirty Hands", "Crossroads, Part II" and "He That Believeth in Me"). Further, there are various redundancies between the two crews that are appropriately dealt with (TRS: deleted scene from "Exodus, Part II").

Resuming the Search for Earth

edit source

Galactica takes aboard a significant quantity of civilians following the exodus from New Caprica, as several civilian ships are lost during the escape from the failed colony. Cramped conditions increase as crew and civilians struggle to adapt to life back aboard a ship. The civilians reside on the refurbished starboard hangar deck as a refugee camp nicknamed "Camp Oil Slick" and later "Dogsville" (TRS: "Torn" and "The Woman King").

Galactica is outnumbered during the Battle of the Ionian Nebula.

During a food shortage crisis caused by contamination of the Fleet's food processing systems, Galactica (along with its Raptors acting as pilot ships) guides the civilian Fleet through an area of intense heat, light and radiation caused by a dense star cluster to reach edible resources on the algae planet. Galactica's heavy armor and radiation shielding protect it from the intense effects of the cluster, but the ship still suffers hull damage and numerous decompressions.

When the Fleet reaches the Ionian Nebula, four Cylon baseships are detected following an unexplained power outage. With the entire Fleet powered down and unable to escape, Galactica scrambles its Vipers and prepares for a lopsided fight, outnumbered and outgunned (TRS: "Crossroads, Part II"). During the following battle, Galactica manages to hold off the main attack of the massive Cylon attack force. Despite the damage suffered in previous engagements, the old warship wields its main guns and point defense batteries effectively again in defense of the Fleet. Despite having the advantage, and managing to destroy or damage several civilian ships, the Cylons retreat in the middle of the battle, after detecting one of the Final Five among the Colonials. Galactica takes minor damage in the battle, taking missile impacts on the dorsal hull and contributing to further weakening of its overall structure (TRS: "He That Believeth in Me").

After three years of searching, Galactica and its Fleet locate Earth. The fleet enters orbit, and immediately launch ground teams who quickly determine that the planet is uninhabitable, having suffered a cataclysm sometime prior. A short time after, Galactica leads its fleet back to the stars (TRS: "Revelations" and "Sometimes a Great Notion").

Post-Earth

edit source
A heavily damaged Galactica.

With Galactica's advanced age, the corners cut during construction, and the abuse it has been put through since the war started, in addition to no access to any repair facilities, have all contributed to deteriorating conditions. Electrical systems begin to fail intermittently throughout the ship, causing lights to flicker and power to be interrupted to multiple areas. A structural survey of the ship finds several torn supports and weakened areas in the hull, and a more in-depth examination finds endemic metal fatigue throughout the ship, with virtually every part of the hull riddled with small cracks and fissures. A plan is proposed to treat the damaged parts of the ship with an organic Cylon resin from the Rebel basestar, which would fill the cracks and bear the stresses, which Adama at first refuses. However, Adama finally appreciates Galactica's dire condition when he finds a tear in a bulkhead in his quarters, and orders Tyrol to carry out his plan to repair the ship (TRS: "No Exit"). Despite the resin, Galactica is dying of old age and accumulated battle damage.

Despite repairs, the ship continues to degrade; when Boomer kidnaps Hera, she narrowly escapes from the retracting flight pods and executes an FTL jump close to the dorsal port side bow section and forward magazine of Galactica; the spacial distortions crumple multiple sections of the area, causing massive electrical surges and power interruptions to CIC and adjacent decks, and damage in the port side hangar deck. Despite attempts to repair the damage with Cylon resin, the hull continues to degrade and power failures ship-wide become more and more frequent. The estimate from repair crews is that Galactica has maybe 5 jumps left in her before she splits in two. When Starbuck attempts to talk with the comatose Anders and put him out of his misery he awakens, grabs her arm and begins reciting random phrases like a Hybrid. Galactica experiences multiple severe power surges and even its engines begin to malfunction; the organic resin running through the hull is acting like a complex network of neural fibers which allows Anders to interface with various ship systems. He could even engage the ship's FTL drives and jump the ship if he wanted to. Even though Anders is disconnected and falls back into a coma Adama comes to grips with the fact that Galactica's time is at an end and she can't be saved. He reluctantly gives the order to abandon ship.

Command will be transferred to the Cylon baseship once supplies and personnel have been offloaded (TRS: "Islanded in a Stream of Stars"). The ship is to be stripped of all useful equipment, including its Viper launching mechanisms. However, inspired by a photo of Hera on the Memorial Hallway, Admiral Adama decides to commit the old battlestar to one last mission: a suicidal mission to rescue Hera from the Cylon homeworld, the Colony. With Starbuck's help, he puts a line of red tape down the center of the hangar deck and makes an impassioned speech to the gathered crew members: He will lead Galactica to rescue Hera, but it is a volunteer mission only. If there are not enough people to crew Galactica, he will instead lead a Raptor assault with anyone willing to join him. Everybody makes their choice; there are enough people to crew the ship. Preparations for the final mission get underway. Command of the Fleet is transferred to Louis Hoshi, the flag is transferred to the baseship and a number of Vipers are assigned to it for CAP duties.

Battle of The Colony

edit source
Galactica takes massive hits seconds after jumping to The Colony.

With a skeleton crew and a frail battlestar, Admiral Adama executes a daring mission to rescue Hera Agathon.

Galactica jumps to the Colony at point-blank range. Almost immediately, the ship is pummeled mercilessly by the Colony's heavy caliber cannons and multi-barrel point defense turrets (causing the destruction of its dorsal Colonial roundel and heavy structural damage all around the ship) until Samuel Anders, recently injured and turned into a Hybrid, manages to take them and the Colony's Hybrids offline. As Galactica's Vipers launch and engage incoming Raiders, its Raptors jump directly from their berth in the starboard flight pod, causing the destruction of the pod, and maneuver to board the Colony. Galactica then accelerates to flank speed and rams the Colony, providing an entry and exit point for assault teams but crumpling its forward alligator head and destroying the forward observation deck.

As the battle wages on, Cylon Raiders swarm Galactica, destroying at least one of its remaining heavy gun batteries. Cylon forces manage to blow a hole in Deck 21, allowing them to pour into the ship at platoon strength. Legions of enemy Centurions swarm into the ship, and are held back by marine firing squads, despite inflicting heavy casualties. After a brief cease fire, the ship comes under enemy fire once more, in one final push by Cylon forces. After the Colony is hit with nuclear-tipped missiles launched by Racetrack's drifting Raptor, both Galactica and the Colony begin falling into the black hole the Colony was orbiting.

Journey's End

edit source
A crippled Galactica over Earth.

Battered by interstellar debris, Galactica is successful in escaping its position via a blind FTL jump to coordinates Thrace enters. While successfully emerging from its final FTL jump, Galactica suffers a series of catastrophic failures across its entire structure. Between the failure to retract its flight pods and the cumulative damage sustained over its flight from the Colonies, Galactica's lateral structural supports buckle. This "breaks the back" of the last battlestar, visibly apparent as the entire midsection violently oscillates against the bow and engineering sections.

A cascading effect of hull breaches and explosive decompressions rock the ship, with multiple decks venting to space. Structural reinforcing beams rip through ceilings and floors, causing insurmountable damage and blowing out electrical conduits. Damage to this infrastructure results in electrical failures and power surges destroying multiple system components, including displays, in the CIC. As the midsection flexes, several Vipers are tossed from the port flight deck, and pieces of the outer hull shear off.

Reinforced by Cylon organic resin, the ship's overall integrity remains cohesive, but barely. Life support, DRADIS and sublight propulsion are operational, while FTL is inoperative. Given the overall state, Galactica has made its final jump...hanging over the singular satellite of a habitable planet within sublight range.

When the Colonials decide to colonize this world, Galactica's personnel and supplies are transferred to the new world. Along with the surviving bulk of the civilian fleet, Galactica is piloted directly into the system's star by Samuel Anders, who remains aboard as he is interconnected with the battlestar. William Adama becomes the last ambulatory soul to leave the ship, departing in his Cylon War-era Viper Mark II. 150,000 years thereafter, existence of the ship and its Fleet are absent from Earth's history, except for the existence of a progenitor to the new human race[9] (TRS: "Daybreak, Part II").

For information on Senior Staff, see : Senior Staff of Galactica
For a list of pilots, see: List of Pilots
For a list of deckhands, see: List of deckhands

Before the attack, Galactica has approximately 2,900 crewmen. By the time of the arrival of Pegasus, attrition has reduced this number to about 2,660. (c.f. Crew tally) It is unknown whether the Colonial Marines account for members or not.

The Battlestar Galactica from the 2003 Video Game

The battlestar Galactica is the central ship in the video game Battlestar Galactica, released in 2003 by Vivendi Universal Games.

The setting of this game depicts Galactica as a veteran battleship in a setting that makes it a prequel of the events of the Original Series by approximately 35-45 yahren, but with significant differences to both continuities.

The player takes on the role of "William Adama," a character that shares the name of his Re-imagined Series character, but whose history and continuity as a Viper pilot follows more more closely the technology and backstory of the Original Series. As such, the battlestar Galactica shown in the game is generally the Original Series version and seems mostly, but not fully, integrated in the Original Series continuity.

The young Adama grows into leadership throughout the course of the game. Confirming Adama's progression is the appearance of the Imperious Leader Erebus, Adama that, according to "sacred prophesies" he will "lead the last surviving humans to the location of the 13th tribe". The age of the battlestar as stated in the game implies that Galactica has fought for at least half of the Thousand Yahren War.

The Galactica of the game is predominantly based on the Original Series version of Galactica, but with notable changes from TOS canon, to reflect her in-game approximately 500-yahren service and the fact that she has had to rely on alien technology (a game exclusive) for upgrades and repairs. Text from the game notes:

"The battlestar has been repaired often and parts of its structure are clearly newer or are made of stranger, alien materials. Parts of the huge engine nacelles are broken and partly scaffolded, the repairs half-complete, the exposed structures vast and skeletal."

Given the ship is based on the original, it is reasonable to assume her size and capabilities mirror those of the Original Series battlestars.

Galactica's commanding officer in the game is Commander Bryn Magus and his executive officer is Colonel Jen Kassia; neither character is mentioned other than in this game.

Five battlestars are mentioned in the game:

  • The game version of Galactica is part of a separate continuity that mixes elements from the Re-imagined Series and Original Series as well as unique material. It is not a canonical item in either series.
  • This game debuted in stores on November 18, 2003. The Miniseries of the Re-imagined adventures of a new Galactica premiered on the Sci-Fi Channel less than a month later, on December 8, 2003. Despite suggestions that this game was based more on elements from the defunct Singer/DeSanto revival project, it was in fact created to encompass elements of both the 1978 and 2003 shows. An earlier incarnation of the game based on the Singer/DeSanto project was scripted but never produced. As a result, the game's continuity doesn't quite fit in either the Re-imagined or Original Series universes.

The battlestar fleet at Cimtar.

Acropolis was one of five battlestars sent to the peace conference near the old moon Cimtar, which then turned out to be an ambush by the Cylons.

While Galactica was able to survive, as it had left the battle early to rescue the Twelve Colonies, the attack destroyed Atlantia and three other battlestars, including Acropolis (TOS: "Saga of a Star World").

This is a listing of battlestars in the Re-imagined Series continuity.

Athena is in service during the Cylon War.

Saul Tigh was recorded as having served admirably aboard this ship as a Viper pilot, earning a number of medals. [1] However, given that Saul Tigh was not a member of the Colonial Fleet until after the Armistice, this is false (TRS: "No Exit").

  • Given her participation in the Cylon War, Athena is almost certain to be one of the twelve original battlestars like her sister, Galactica. However, there is not 100% proof that Athena's actual class is the same as Galactica. It can not be confirmed with this little information.
  • The series bible implies that the Athena was one of only three ships of Galactica's class to survive the war. As such it is likely that the Athena was one of the battlestars involved in "Operation Raptor Talon".

Atlantia

edit source
For the Original Series battlestar, see: Atlantia (TOS).

Atlantia is selected by Admiral Nagala as his flagship during the Fall of the Twelve Colonies following the destruction of Picon Fleet Headquarters.

Atlantia is soon reported destroyed over Virgon, a victim of the backdoors created by the Cylons using the compromised Command Navigation Program. As a result of her destruction, Commander William Adama assumes command of the Colonial Fleet and proceeds to Ragnar Anchorage (TRS: "Miniseries").

It was on Atlantia that William Adama made his 1,000th Viper landing (TRS: "Act of Contrition") and received the promotion to Major (TRS: "Hero"). At one point in his career, Chief Petty Officer Galen Tyrol served aboard Atlantia before being assigned to Galactica (TRS: "Resistance" and "Resistance").

Columbia

Main article: Columbia (RDM)

There have been at least two battlestars to bear the name Columbia in the Colonial Fleet. One is destroyed during Operation Raptor Talon, and the second is destroyed during the Fall of the Twelve Colonies.

Erasmus is noted in the personnel record of crewmember Mueller, who served on it and one other battlestar prior to his service on Galactica (TRS: "Home, Part I").

  • The battlestar's name, specifically the first 3 letters, are covered by a walnut shell. Contributors used reversed-color images to discern the last four letters, "smus," for which there is only one word in American English dictionaries that match. The first letter is partially visible and is a straight-backed letter.
  • The second battlestar name on the document, Night Flight, is less obscured.

Main article: Pegasus (RDM)

Pegasus is a Mercury class battlestar under the command of Rear Admiral Helena Cain at the time of the Second Cylon assault. Pegasus is undergoing scheduled maintenance, and escapes destruction due to her networks being offline (TRS: "Razor").

Peagsus discovers Galactica a few months after the attacks (TRS: "Pegasus").

Solaria, featuring integrated command and control systems and featuring Dr. Gaius Baltar's Command Navigation Program (CNP) is reported as lost, along with the Columbia and Triton.

Commander William Adama mentions the destruction of this battlestar in an update to his crew on the Cylon attack on the Colonies (TRS: "Miniseries").

Main article: Triton (RDM)

Triton, belonging to Battlestar Group 39, and featuring integrated command and control systems, and Dr. Gaius Baltar's Command Navigation Program (CNP) is reported as lost with many other battlestars of the Colonial Fleet during the initial Cylon Attack, along with Columbia and Solaria (TRS: "Miniseries"). Kara "Starbuck" Thrace and Alex "Crashdown" Quartararo formerly served on this battlestar.

File:Battlestar Uned message.gif

Uned is destroyed in the first waves of Cylon attacks during the Fall of the Twelve Colonies.

Anastasia Dualla receives a report of Uned's power outage (a result of the Cylon use of exploits in the Command Navigation Program), and states to Felix Gaeta that "One report said an entire battlestar lost power just before it came in contact with the enemy. They said it was like someone just turned off a switch." (TRS: "Miniseries")

  • There is no mythological origin for "Uned." Uned is Welsh for Unit.

Universal

edit source

Universal[2] is a battlestar that was commanded by Commander Yulee Milner at some point prior to the Fall of the Twelve Colonies.

When then-captain William Adama returns to service for the first time since end of the Cylon War, his first assignment is aboard the Universal based out of Base 12 over Aerilon. Universal’s deck chief was an officer named Teir (TRS: "Scattered").

  • Adama's assignment aboard the Universal is not mentioned in his service dossier.
  • The Universal’s name likely comes from Universal Studios, later NBC Universal, the parent company of the Sci Fi Channel, which produces Battlestar Galatica.

Valkyrie

edit source
Main article: Valkyrie

First Cylon War

edit source

Approximately 10 years into the first Cylon War, the Valkyrie was involved in a battle with the Cylons near Canceron Prime, in which she went missing, and was presumed destroyed. She was later found intact, along with a Colonial "ghost fleet" consisting of at least four ships of the class her descendant would belong to and various support ships, hiding out in Cylon held space by William Adama, Coker Fasjovik, and Becca Kelly ("Blood and Chrome").

Intra-War Period

edit source

Valkyrie belongs to Battlestar Group 41 and was under the command of William Adama before the Fall of the Twelve Colonies. Approximately one year before the Fall of the Colonies, she is tasked with an undercover mission to the edge of Cylon controlled space, where her activities are detected by unknown contacts. (TRS: "Hero").

Yashuman

edit source

Yashuman and at least three other battlestars of the same type—including Valkyrie—are seen orbiting Caprica during the Fall of the Twelve Colonies. Yashuman initially detects the Cylon assault force on DRADIS during the engagement, but after being scanned by Cylon raiders, CNP backdoors are activated and its systems are shut down (TRS: "The Plan"), leading to its destruction.

Additional Information

Columbia is one of the original twelve[3] battlestars created during the Cylon War, in operation as of 40 BCH (60YR).

During the twelfth year of the war, it is assigned to Operation Raptor Talon along with at least two other battlestars, including Galactica, where they attempt to attack a Cylon post on an ice planet in or near Colonial space. Halfway through the operation, Columbia's mid-ship defense zone fails, and it is targeted by Cylon forces. Despite attempts by Colonial Viper pilots to fend off the attacks, Columbia, on fire and adrift in space, is destroyed a short time later. Someone on the ship has enough time to send out a warning for pilots to clear its airspace before an explosion tears through its hull. Columbia is one of the last ships lost during the war, with the Cylons signing an armistice shortly after the ship's destruction.

It resembles other battlestars of its class during the war, with hull plating covering its ribbing and the Colonial seal and hull number printed on the side of the "alligator head" forward section. However, it is finished with blue paint rather than red, as seen on Galactica's hull (TRS: "Razor Flashbacks").

Script Version Details

edit source

The pre-production script for Blood and Chrome identifies Columbia as one of Galactica's sister ships, mentioned alongside Prometheus in the context of the war's progression.[4] The script describes these battlestars as part of the Colonial Fleet that is "showing the Cylon no quarter" during the conflict, emphasizing their role as the backbone of Colonial resistance against the Cylon forces. This reference reinforces Columbia's status as one of the primary battlestars in active service during the war's most intense period.

Additional Information

Columbia is a battlestar in service with the Colonial Fleet circa 0 BCH (2000BYR). It featured integrated command and control systems, along with Dr. Gaius Baltar's Command Navigation Program (CNP). It is reported as lost, along with Solaria and Triton, during the initial moments of the Fall of the Twelve Colonies (TRS: "Miniseries").

  • The name Columbia is a derivation of the name of fifteenth century Genoan explorer Christopher Columbus, which itself is derived from the Latin columba, meaning "dove" or "pigeon." While at first glance such an Earth-based name seems an unlikely choice for an "alien" culture, it might hint at a different version of the Twelve Colonies' ancient history.

  1. These dimensions (in meters) were derived from the CG model and posted by Lee Stringer on the StarshipBuilder.com forums, which are no longer available. They are the most precise so far. The width with pods extended and the height are quoted here verbatim; the length was calculated by adding the posted dimension for the front of the ship (766.04m) to the posted dimension for the back (672.6m). The full set as provided by Lee Stringer is as follows: "Width (Pods out) 536.84m (Pods In) 352.34m Engines Max 359.38m Head Max 334.58m Length: Front (Main body) 730.65m (Antenee) 766.04m Back 672.6m (using the center of the two arms as the middle) Height (Armor/Mainbody) 181.825m (Details) 183.315m".
  2. This is from flight pod to flight pod while they are extended.
  3. In the first night of the Miniseries, Aaron Doral mentions that there were twelve Galactica type battlestars created during the Cylon War. Columbia is clearly of the same class as Galactica, and thus belongs to this type.
  4. Blood and Chrome pre-production script dated 30 November 2010, pg. 2

Columbia

Night Flight

Night Flight is noted in the personnel record of crewmember Mueller, who served on it and one other battlestar prior to his service on Galactica (TRS: "Home, Part I").

  • The second battlestar name on the document, after image and etymological analysis, is discovered to be Erasmus.

Additional Information

Osiris (0913) was an Orion class "pocket battlestar"[1] in the Colonial Fleet, during the First Cylon War. It served in a semi-secretive role during the war, having been hidden away by Colonial admiralty as part of a covert "ghost fleet." At the time of its destruction circa 42 BCH (58YR), Osiris was attached to the 54th Battlestar Group and commanded by Commander Ozar.

Class Information

edit source

Osiris belonged to the Orion-class of assault ships, nicknamed "pocket battlestars" due to their smaller size compared to full battlestars like Galactica. These vessels were approximately quarter the size of Galactica and designed specifically for special operations, incorporating the latest stealth technology available during the First Cylon War.[2]

The Orion-class featured a distinctive submarine-like design that was long, dark, and forbidding, with torpedo-like tubes for launching Vipers positioned in the bow. The ship's CIC maintained a stealthier, more submarine-like feel compared to larger battlestars, with blue LEDs glowing coolly in the dark rather than the standard lighting found on other Colonial vessels.[3]

Due to their specialized design and dangerous missions, Orion-class ships earned the grim nickname "one-way wonders" among Colonial personnel.[4]

Osiris first entered service sometime before the tenth year of the First Cylon War c. 42 BCH (58YR), but was reported as destroyed in an earlier engagement with Cylon forces. In reality, the ship was hiding in Cylon-held space as part of a secret "ghost fleet" the Colonial admiralty had been assembling for over a year as part of an effort to strike at the Cylons when and where they were least expecting it.[5]

The ghost fleet concept involved taking Colonial warships that had been shot to hell but could be salvaged, then officially declaring them destroyed while secretly repairing them for covert operations. Ships like Valkyrie and Loki, also reported lost and presumed destroyed, actually formed the backbone of this hidden fleet operating deep in Cylon space.[6]

As part of the psychological impact on their crews, Colonial Command made all personnel assigned to the ghost fleet witness their own death certificates, emphasizing the complete secrecy of their operations and their official non-existence.[7]

Mission to Djerba

edit source

Sometime after being hidden away, Osiris was tasked by the admiralty for a Priority 1 mission involving a combat jump to Djerba, an ice moon that had become a Cylon strategic outpost early in the war. The mission was part of a larger operation to deliver what appeared to be a virus to blind Cylon defenses, but was actually an intelligence gathering operation in preparation for the Ghost Fleet Offensive.[8]

Mission Planning

edit source

Commander Ozar briefed approximately a dozen pilots in Osiris's cramped briefing room, explaining that a Marine Recon team had already been inserted on Djerba's surface. The ship's mission was to deliver Dr. Becca Kelly safely to the Marines, then extract all personnel once her objective was complete.[9]

The operation required Osiris to be fitted out for a 12-league jump and equipped with ten Mark III Vipers "loaded for bear" and prepared for atmospheric insertion. Due to supply shortages, Ozar noted they were low on ammunition but had managed to "liberate" two cases of ambrosia from Valkyrie's mess as a morale booster for the pilots.[10]

Security Protocols

edit source

The ghost fleet maintained strict security protocols, including challenge-response authentication systems. Incoming aircraft were required to respond to coded challenges such as "Spigot" with the correct response "Arrow." Personnel arriving on Osiris underwent thorough security screening, including retinal scans, weapons searches, and verification of their orders and identity.[11]

Battle of Djerba

edit source
Main article: Battle of Djerba

Osiris successfully completed its jump to Djerba, arriving on the dark side of the moon to avoid detection. However, as the ship came around the nighttime curve of the planet, a Cylon basestar appeared directly in its path. Initially, the Cylon DRADIS could not detect the ship due to its hull's DRADIS-absorbent qualities and stealth capabilities.[12]

Despite the tactical disadvantage, Commander Ozar made the difficult decision to proceed with the mission, knowing that the Marines on the surface were waiting and that "timing's everything with this op." She acknowledged that even in stealth mode, the Cylons would pick them up on DRADIS once they launched their aircraft, but felt they had no choice but to continue.[13]

The ship was quickly overwhelmed by the more powerful basestar and suffered numerous hits in the initial assault, eventually losing its starboard sublight engine nacelle. The outnumbered Vipers engaged the Raiders while the main body fought the basestar, but were overwhelmed ten to one.[14]

Final Sacrifice

edit source

As the battle situation deteriorated, Commander Ozar gave the order to fire the nuclear warheads, but the missile launch systems had been compromised by prior hits - the bay doors were jammed. His Executive Officer warned that at their current range, they might not be able to clear the blast radius, but Ozar determined they had no choice.[15]

In order to protect those on the planet below, Ozar ordered Osiris to charge directly at the basestar and requested manual override control of the nuclear warheads. Looking at her crew one final time, she said "It was an honor, gentlemen" before flipping the manual detonation switch.[16]

Not long after, a massive nuclear detonation occurred, and DRADIS contact with both vessels was lost. The sacrifice of Osiris successfully destroyed the Cylon basestar and eliminated the Raiders that had been pursuing the surface mission team (TRS: "Blood and Chrome").[17]

Aircraft Operations

edit source
Osiris' hangar deck as seen circa 42 BCH (58YR).

Osiris carried a complement of Viper Mark III fighters specifically designed for the ship's special operations role. These Mark III Vipers were sleeker than standard models, with bigger wings designed for both space combat and ground air support missions. The ship's forward-facing launch tubes allowed for rapid deployment, though the cramped hangar bay meant operations were more constrained than on full-sized battlestars.[18]

The ship's aft landing bay posed significant challenges for incoming aircraft. The flight deck was positioned directly behind the engines and was notably short, requiring precise timing and skill from pilots. Incoming craft risked becoming "ramp roast" if they came in too slow, or smashing into the reinforced bulkhead if they came in too fast. The bay was equipped with magnetic arrestors to help stop incoming Raptors and Vipers.[19]

  • Unnamed Executive Officer - Managed tactical operations and damage control[21]
  • Unnamed Doctor - Performed security screening and retinal scans[22]
  • Unnamed Marine Sergeant - Led security teams and screening operations[23]
  • Unnamed Landing Signals Officer - Coordinated dangerous aft deck landings[24]

Production Notes

edit source

In the pre-production script for Blood and Chrome dated November 30, 2010, this vessel is consistently referred to as "Reliant" rather than "Osiris."[27] The name change to "Osiris" occurred in future drafts leading to production, though the reasons for this alteration are not documented. The script provides significantly more detail about the ship's operations, crew, and final battle than appears in the finished production.

Additionally, Commander Ozar's characterization differs significantly between the script and final version. In the pre-production script, Ozar is depicted as a male "hard-looking ex-pilot and commando in his 40s,"[28] while in the final aired version, Commander Ozar is portrayed by actress Jill Teed.

  • The Orion-class design philosophy of cramped but efficient operations reflects the Colonial Fleet's adaptation to prolonged warfare and resource constraints during the later stages of the First Cylon War.

Additional Information

Pegasus (BS 62) is a Mercury-class battlestar, commanded by Rear Admiral Helena Cain during the time leading up to and after the Fall of the Twelve Colonies. Built sometime after the First Cylon War, Pegasus was the crown jewel of the Colonial Fleet, with a famous reputation and many officers yearning for a post on the ship (TRS: "Razor").

After the Fall, Pegasus is informally nicknamed "The Beast" within the surviving Colonial Fleet (TRS: "The Captain's Hand").

Before the Fall

edit source
Pegasus docked at the Scorpion Fleet Shipyards.

At some point prior to the Fall, Pegasus is upgraded to include the Command Navigation Program, a new operating system (later found to be bugged) designed for use in Colonial spacecraft. Parts of it were taken offline during a three-month systems overhaul at the Scorpion Fleet Shipyards shortly before the Cylon attack, an attribute which later spared the ship from destruction (TRS: "Pegasus").

For the three-month overhaul, technicians and staff from both the Ministry of Defense and Integral Systems Engineering were aboard the ship, assisting Pegasus crew members with the upgrades. One of those technicians, Gina Inviere, worked to gain the trust of the crew - even entering into a relationship with Rear Admiral Cain, in what is now known to be an act of subterfuge (TRS: "Razor").

Cylons Attack

edit source
Main articles: Fall of the Scorpion Fleet Shipyards, Fall of the Twelve Colonies

Shortly after the ship enters drydock, the Cylons strike the Colonies. The Fleet Shipyards are indirectly struck by nuclear weapons, which blinds both Cylon and Colonial DRADIS. The nuclear strike is powerful enough to knock the crew to the decks, causing many injuries. Pegasus survives the nuclear strike, but with multiple casualties to her officers and crewmen, and damage to its computer systems, it is unable to fight back. With no other options available, Cain orders a blind FTL jump away from the shipyards.

Pegasus emerges four to five plotted jumps away from the Colonies, far from the Cylon onslaught. Cain uses this time to repair her ship, and calm the crew, with the intent on getting back into the fight, but repair efforts are compounded by rumors of the fate of the Colonies and the Colonial Fleet. After revealing that both have been destroyed, Cain prepares the ship and crew for hit-and-run attacks against Cylon targets, and with the help of ISE specialist Inviere, quickly determine their first target. The crew responds with overwhelming support.

As the computer systems are brought back online by Ministry of Defense officer Kendra Shaw, she discovers that the Command Navigation Program contains a backdoor, allowing access to the computer network. Shaw determines that it is Cylon in origin, and should be purged (TRS: "Razor").

Hit and Run Campaign, and A Cylon Spy

edit source
Main article: Battle of the Communications Relay
A Centurion on Pegasus.

With repairs complete, Pegasus begins her attacks on what is thought to be a small communications relay. However, after launching a handful of Vipers, multiple Raider squadrons appear on DRADIS, revealing the area to be a staging ground. The Vipers are quickly outnumbered, and are unable to proceed as planned. Cain orders the reserves launched, however executive officer Colonel Jurgen Belzen hesitates and proposes to retreat in order to form a new plan. A now furious Cain calls for Belzen's sidearm, and summarily executes him on the spot for refusing to carry out orders, much to the shock and horror of the CIC staff present. As the battle continues, Cain calls up her second officer, Lieutenant Colonel Jack Fisk, to launch the reserves. Still in shock, he calls for the launch.

The battle does not proceed well, with the Cylons soon gaining access to the ship via the flight pods. As the boarding parties fight their way into the ship, officer Shaw discovers a woman in white who looks exactly like Gina Inviere walking the corridors. Determining that she is not a Pegasus officer or crewman, she guns the woman down, and then makes her way back to the CIC, where she finds Inviere next to Cain. Shaw determines that she is Cylon in nature, and moves to apprehend her. As she sees her double on a security feed, she kills three marines before she is knocked unconscious and removed from the CIC.

While Pegasus is able to destroy the relay, the battle was pyrrhic at best, with heavy Colonial losses. At this point, nearly 816 crewmen have been killed, with 121 injured. Losses are further compounded by the tally of Vipers lost or damaged in the battle, with half the air wing suffering damage.

The battle takes an insurmountable toll on the crew, and the communications relay would be the first and last Cylon target Pegasus strikes on its own (TRS: "Razor").

Following the conclusion of the battle at the Communications Relay, Cain begins the interrogation of Inviere, using whatever methods necessary. Considered now to be nothing more than an emotionless machine, certain members of the crew, led by Lieutenant Alastair Thorne begin assaulting and raping the prisoner. Thorne is essential in saving the lives of many Pegasus officers and crew, most of whom line up behind him in support of torturing the Cylon prisoner (TRS: "Razor").

A Lost Civilian Fleet

edit source

File:Lost Civilian Fleet.gif Pegasus encounters a small fleet of fifteen civilian ships, found about a week after the Fall of the Twelve Colonies. Admiral Cain uses them as a source of spare parts, deciding that the military needs of Pegasus take priority over the survival of the civilians. Cain also reviews the ships' passenger lists and draws up a list of valuable selectees, people such as aeronautical engineer Peter Laird, to forcibly draft into its crew. However, some are with their families and refuse to leave them.

Facing an uprising aboard the civilian transport Scylla that spreads to the other ships, Admiral Cain orders Colonel Fisk to shoot the families of any who resist. When the angry crowd grows violent, Lieutenant Kendra Shaw and her Marines carry out the order, killing ten people and cowing the rest into submission. The civilian ships are stripped of useful items, including their FTL drives, and are left to their fate as Pegasus resumes its campaign of hit-and-run attacks against the Cylons (TRS: "Pegasus" and "Razor").

Finding Galactica, and Cylon Resurrection

edit source
Main article: Battle of the Resurrection Ship

Months after the attacks, Pegasus is still tracking a large Cylon fleet jumping from system to system with natural resources. When Pegasus jumps ahead to the Cylon's next projected position, it detects a large fleet. After communication is made, and authentications exchanged, it is revealed that the fleet is led by battlestar Galactica (BS 75), believed by Pegasus' crew to have been destroyed. Integration into the fleet doesn't go as smooth as both crews had hoped, with Admiral Cain quickly taking command, and integrating both crews despite having said otherwise. She also begins neglecting the civilian fleet, with many crucial supplies going to both battlestars instead. Cain also uses this time to share the information they've gathered about the Cylon fleet they've been tracking with Galactica's CO, William Adama. Several basestars, their support ships, and one unidentified ship is seen in the recon photographs.

During this time, Lt. Thorne is brought aboard Galactica to interrogate Sharon Agathon, Galactica's Cylon prisoner, while Dr. Baltar is brought to Pegasus to see Gina Inviere. Lt. Thorne wastes no time in abusing Agathon, and when deck chief Galen Tyrol, and pilot Karl "Helo" Agathon are told of his visit, they rush to the jail cell and pull him off Sharon, moments away from raping her. Chief Tyrol tosses him to the wall, where he knocks his head against an exposed bolt, and dies as a result. This further escalates tensions, as Cain announces plans to execute Lt. Agathon and Chief Tyrol for their actions. Commander Adama aboard Galactica launches Vipers and Raptors in an attempt to get his men back, an action which nearly sparks a shooting war between the battlestars. The fight is broken up after Galactica pilot, Lt. Kara Thrace, returning from an unscheduled recon of the Cylon fleet, is detected, and initially believed to be a Cylon Raider. Cooler heads prevail, and a truce is called while the crews work to destroy their Cylon target, now discovered to be a Resurrection Ship.

A plan to attack is formulated as the two crews begin working with each other. However, distrust remains, and each commander has one person under their respective commands ready to execute each other at a moments notice, citing concerns in leadership style. The battle proceeds as planned, with both battlestars working in unison against two basestars, while fighters are used to draw the Raiders away from the targets. With the basestars occupied, a small joint force of Vipers converges on the Resurrection Ship, and destroys it. This proves to be a turning point in relations between both crews, and both sides call off their decapitation plans. As both crews relax, an escaped Inviere exacts revenge on Cain for the physical and emotional abuse she's suffered, gunning her down in the war room. Cain's death marks the end of hostilities with the crew of Galactica, and the permanent integration of Pegasus and her crew into the surviving fleet (TRS: "Pegasus", "Razor", "Resurrection Ship, Part I" and "Resurrection Ship, Part II").

Service Within the Fleet

edit source
Main articles: Battle of the Binary Star System, Battle of the Guardian Basestar

Following Admiral Cain's death, Jack Fisk is promoted to the rank of commander, and is instated as the ship's new CO. Thanks to his involvement in the fleet's black market, Pegasus now becomes a staging ground for smuggling goods across the fleet. However, due to his high, negligent demands with the market, Commander Fisk is murdered a short time later, further adding to Pegasus' dark history (TRS: "Black Market"). Following Fisk's death, newly promoted Admiral Adama appoints the ship's former chief engineer Barry Garner as CO. As Garner is used to dealing with machines, rather than people, his command style is rather strict, with many crew either punished or interned for their actions. When a pair of Pegasus' Raptors go missing, Garner ignores all authoritative orders, and takes Pegasus to go find them, triggering a Cylon trap. Pegasus is quickly outnumbered, and takes heavy damage, knocking out the FTL drive, and the ship's only means of escape. Realizing his mistake, Cmdr. Garner cedes command to his XO, Lee "Apollo" Adama, while he retreats to the engine room to repair the FTL drive. While Pegasus is successful in fighting off the Cylon trap, it loses its third CO after Cmdr. Garner dies from vacuum exposure while effecting repairs (TRS: "The Captain's Hand"). Upon returning to the fleet, Admiral Adama appoints Lee Adama as Pegasus' next CO.

After settling into his new command, Cmdr. Adama begins the search for a new XO and eventually settles on Kendra Shaw, out of a desire to demonstrate to the crew a measure of respect for Cain's legacy that he in fact does not share. Pegasus is called upon shortly thereafter to find a missing Raptor, sent out by Galactica to study a supernova remnant. Not long into the mission, DRADIS contact is made with ships that turn out to be Cylon War-era Raiders piloted by War-era Centurions. It is quickly determined that the missing Raptor crew were taken by these Cylons back to their baseship. Pegasus initiates a battle in order to lure the Raiders away from the baseship, as a lone group make their way via spacewalk to the missing crew. Numerous kamikaze Raiders strike the ship and penetrate the hull, but with minimal damage. Pegasus is successful in rescuing the kidnapped Raptor crew and destroying the baseship. However, Kendra Shaw sacrifices herself in order to detonate the nuclear weapon smuggled aboard the baseship (TRS: "Razor").

New Caprica

edit source
Main article: Battle of New Caprica

Following the founding of New Caprica, Pegasus is assigned to the orbital defense force that protects the planet. During this time, Commander Lee "Apollo" Adama keeps an emergency supply of medication aboard for the pilots, despite the fact that their crew are severely depleted due to colonization of the planet. One year after the founding the colony, the Cylons return in force. Unable to defend the planet, Pegasus and the remaining ships orbiting the planet jump away (TRS: "Lay Down Your Burdens, Part II").

Pegasus' destruction.

Four months later, Pegasus and Galactica plan a rescue mission to recover the humans left on the planet (TRS: "Occupation"). While the plans initially called for the involvement of Pegasus in the recovery, Admiral Adama decides that the remnants of the Fleet, the last free people of humanity, should not be left unprotected if things went awry. The admiral takes Galactica in the rescue effort without Pegasus, ordering his son to stay with the Fleet at a rendezvous point to await their return (TRS: "Precipice" and "Exodus, Part I").

Despite the admiral's orders, Pegasus leaves the majority of its crew, fighters and all but four of its Raptor complement to protect the remnants of the Fleet and returns to New Caprica to participate in the rescue. Pegasus jumps into the fight and finds Galactica under fire from four Cylon basestars. Pegasus destroys one of the baseships with its forward batteries and attracts the attention of the others while Galactica repairs its FTL drive and prepares to jump away.

Pegasus reels from the onslaught of missiles from the remaining Cylon basestars and is beset upon by Raiders, sustaining heavy damage. It becomes clear to Admiral Adama that Pegasus's trip was one-way. Following Galactica's jump, Commander Adama sets his battlestar's batteries on auto-fire and orders the crew to abandon ship, pausing just long enough to give his dying command a quiet thanks. As the evacuation Raptors jump away, the Pegasus, mortally damaged and now completely unmanned, rams an attacking basestar, destroying both vessels. Due to her alligator head detonating, Pegasus's fuel lines ignite, causing explosions to ripple down the ship's hull towards the fuel stores, which detonate and blow apart the entire engineering section. The starboard flight pod is thrown away, and is flung into a handful of raiders, eventually colliding with another nearby basestar, destroying it as well (TRS: "Exodus, Part II"). The rest of Pegasus's crew, Vipers and Raptors are integrated with Galactica, bolstering its air wing and pilot roster significantly.

Pegasus operates at least 10 squadrons of Viper Mark VII space-superiority fighters. During the Battle of the Binary Star System four color-coded squadrons are identified verbally and on the DRADIS (TRS: "The Captain's Hand"). Since these designations are later used for very different squadrons led by different people, they are very likely just wireless callsigns. Moreover, the standing squadrons on Galactica have more elaborate names and are numbered, such as the Vigilantes. The colors and group leaders could be assigned on an ad-hoc basis, while a more formal structure exists in the background.

Given that Pegasus suffers over 90 Viper casualties with 32 being destroyed during its attack on a Cylon communications relay (TRS: "Razor"), but is still able to field a sizable Viper complement at the time of encountering Galactica, this suggests that its initial Viper loadout was very large. The exact number of Vipers per squadron for a full-strength battlestar is approximately 20 (Battlestar Galactica RPG). Also, Pegasus fielded approximately 8 squadrons of Vipers and 2 reserve squadrons, and the number of Vipers per squadron must have been 20 to equal up to 200 Vipers.

Pegasus has approximately 50 Raptors, having lost over half of its fighters and recon craft, and 20 Raptors can be deployed for the Caprica rescue mission, while Galactica alone appears to have difficulties deploying more than about 5 Raptors at one time ("The Farm," "Resistance").

Senior Staff at Time of Destruction

  • According to David Eick's video blog, it would have been impossible to afford creating new sets for the entire interior of Pegasus on the budget of an episodic television show. This expense was circumvented when a year beforehand Ron D. Moore and David Eick bought (for next to nothing) the abandoned sets of the failed pilot for the FOX network's Lost In Space remake, directed by John Woo. The production team then held onto the sets hoping to find some later use for them, eventually using them for "Pegasus". The sets were then radically redesigned and painted to give them the aesthetic look of Galactica, but sleeker and more advanced.
  • During the Battle of New Caprica, Pegasus is shown to possess anti-ship gun turrets on the dorsal surface of its flight pods (visible when the ship is firing all of its weapons). However, none of the CGI models show any evidence of such turrets, so this is likely a VFX error.
  • This ship is named after the winged horse from Greek mythology.
  • The Colonial Military seems to employ a network optimization process also defined by Cisco in the real world: see PPDIOO. As network breakdowns induced by Cylon viruses are the main reason for the Colonial Fleet's demise, this might comprise a pun on said networking company.

Triton is a battlestar in service with the Colonial Fleet prior to the Fall of the Twelve Colonies, where Kara Thrace had been previously posted under the command of James Jonasson before her reassignment to Galactica (TRS: "The Son Also Rises").

Triton was named by William Adama alongside other battlestars, Columbia, Solaria, and Atlantia, when the Cylons attacked the Colonies (TRS: "Miniseries"). At the time of its destruction it was part of the 39th battlestar group (TRS: "33" and "Water").

Lt. Alex "Crashdown" Quartararo survives the ship's destruction and is found by President Laura Roslin's fleet, where he is reassigned to Galactica as Karl "Helo" Agathon's ECO replacement for Raptor 312 (TRS: "33" and "Water").

edit source

  • The ship is likely named after a figure in Colonial faith or mythology, given the parallels of the Colonial faith and the pantheon of Greek gods. In Greek mythology, Triton is not one of the Twelve Olympians himself (and as such might not be considered a Lord of Kobol by the Colonials), but the son of Poseidon and messenger of the sea.
  • Quartararo's ship patch is incorrectly embroidered "BST 39," as it was erroneously assumed that that "BSG" stands for "Battlestar Galactica" and thus the last letter was changed for the Triton patch. However, both the water tank diagram in "Water" and the patches for Pegasus, Valkyrie, and Osiris establish that "BSG" stands for battlestar group.

Yashuman

Additional Information
Valkyrie in the separate continuity

Valkyrie was a veteran Colonial battlestar of an unnamed class, built around the start of the First Cylon War. It played a crucial role in eliminating the Cylon's edge during the Ghost Fleet Offensive in 42 BCH (58YR). Following the Cimtar Peace Accord, it remains in service up until 0 BCH (2000BYR), serving on the Colonial front lines with its sister ships. It is stationed, and is subsequently destroyed, over Caprica during the Fall of the Twelve Colonies.

Circa 6 BCH (94YR), Valkyrie was attached to the 41st Battlestar Group under William Adama's command, until his reassignment following the unsuccessful, clandestine mission to probe the Armistice Line that results in the loss of one of his pilots (TRS: "Hero").

First Cylon War

edit source

Around 42 BCH (58YR), approximately ten years into the first Cylon War, Valkyrie was involved in a battle with Cylons near Canceron Prime, in which the ship took major damage, and was presumed destroyed. In truth, Colonial Admiralty saw an opportunity to trick the Cylons, and the ship had become part of a secret Colonial "ghost fleet" hiding in Cylon-held space, where several pilots and their planes were on detachment to the battlestar Osiris. Valkyrie's crew at the time were made to witness their own death certificates.

After the Cylons were fed more false information, Valkyrie, along with the rest of the "Ghost Fleet," participated in the successful Ghost Fleet Offensive campaign against Cylon forces, striking every Cylon base in five sectors (TRS: "Blood and Chrome").

Inter-War Period

edit source

Approximately 6 BCH (94YR)[footnotes 1] before the Cylon attack, Valkyrie had been ordered by Admiral Peter Corman to deploy a stealth recon ship over the Armistice Line to test Cylon resolve and gather intelligence on Cylon activities. During the mission, an unidentified DRADIS contact (presumed to have been a spacecraft) entered the area of the stealth ship piloted by Lieutenant Daniel Novacek and damaged the Stealthstar's engines before jumping away.

Two further (presumed Cylon) contacts were detected on an intercept course with the stealth ship. Rather than attempt a rescue of the disabled craft, Commander Adama ordered the stealth ship to be destroyed to prevent its discovery and capture.

In the days and years following the incident at the Armistice Line, and in particular after the Cylon attack on the Colonies, Adama came to believe that his actions had provoked the Cylon assault, having proven to them that humanity was aggressive and not to be trusted (TRS: "Hero").

Return of the Cylons

edit source

During the initial Cylon assault on the Twelve Colonies, battlestars Valkyrie and Yashuman engage the Cylons over Caprica. Both battlestars move to weapons-free status, only to be disabled by the CNP's backdoors before any shots could be fired. Valkyrie, Yashuman, and a third battlestar of the same class, along with their deployed Viper squadrons and support crafts, are destroyed shortly after (TRS: "The Plan")[external 1].

Technical Specifications

edit source

The ship's hull number cannot be seen. It is thus not known if it is identical to its battlestar group.

Production History

edit source

The Valkyrie CIC insignia adorned David Eick's production office wall in the Vancouver Film Studios where Battlestar Galactica was produced.[production 1]

Cultural References

edit source

In Norse mythology, a Valkyrie is a minor female deity who chooses the most heroic fallen warriors to ascend to Valhalla where they would await Ragnarok. Valkyrie is the third (second onscreen) instance of Norse mythology being used, the first being Ragnar Station, which is a reference to Ragnarok, the "twilight of the gods."

The story of Ragnarok parallels the career of William Adama, the one-time commander of Valkyrie. Adama, considered a fallen hero by the admiralty, is transferred from the advanced Valkyrie to command the aging Galactica about a year before the Cylon attack. Later, with the fall of the Colonies, he finds himself in the Battle of Ragnar Anchorage, the last battle within Colonial space.

From Script to Screen

edit source

Comparing the October 25, 2006 "Full Collated" version of David Eick's screenplay to the final aired episode reveals several key differences regarding Valkyrie's role and the covert mission:

  • An extensive briefing scene between Admiral Corman and Adama in Corman's office does not appear in the aired episode. This sequence establishes the mission's political context, with Corman emphasizing "We may never have an opportunity like this again" and discussing the consequences of discovery.[production 2] The aired version references this mission only through dialogue and flashbacks, streamlining the exposition.
  • Eick's screenplay describes Valkyrie as "a battlestar larger and newer than Galactica, although unlike Pegasus in its leaner, sleeker design, built more for speed."[production 3]
  • More detailed flashback scenes in Valkyrie's CIC appear in the written version, including specific DRADIS contact reports and extended dialogue between Adama and his crew during the crisis.[production 4] The broadcast episode condenses these sequences significantly for pacing, focusing on the emotional impact rather than technical details.
  • While both versions include Tigh explicitly describing Galactica as Adama's "graceful retirement" following the failed mission, the screenplay provides additional context about how "that last mission wasn't exactly a boon to the old man's career."[production 5] This dialogue establishes how the mission's failure led to Adama's reassignment from the modern Valkyrie to the aging battlestar.
  • The production materials contain more extensive exposition about Admiral Corman's post-mission debriefing, showing his insistence that the DRADIS contacts "were Cylons" despite Adama's reluctance to confirm positive identification.[production 6] The final episode handles this revelation through Adama's confession to Apollo, eliminating the direct confrontation with Corman.

Galactica type

edit source
Main article: Galactica type battlestar

During the First Cylon War, Galactica and two unnamed Battlestars are seen with their Viper escorts over one of the Colonies (TRS: "Blood and Chrome").

An unnamed Galactica type Battlestar is seen hiding out in Cylon held space among the Battlestars Valkyrie, Osiris, heavy cruiser Loki (TRS: "Blood and Chrome"), and a number of other ships.

Another unnamed Galactica type is seen participating in Operation Raptor Talon, in cooperation with Galactica, and Columbia (TRS: "Razor Flashbacks"). The series bible hints that this battlestar might be Athena.

At least two Galactica type Battlestars are moored at the Scorpion Fleet Shipyards at the time of the surprise attack against the Colonies. They are sitting ducks, and are quickly destroyed by Cylon forces (TRS: "Razor").

Another Galactica type is seen wrecked above Caprica shortly after the renewed Cylon attacks (TRS: "Miniseries").

Valkyrie type

"Demeter" type

edit source
Demeter video fly-by by artist James Hibbert.

There are at least two ships of this type within the Ghost Fleet alongside battlestars Valkyrie, Osiris and heavy cruiser Loki (TRS: "Blood and Chrome").

Two more vessels of this class are also seen with Galactica's battle group when William Adama transfers aboard (TRS: "Blood and Chrome").

"Alert" type

edit source

One ship of this class can be seen beneath a Catamaran type of ship in the Ghost Fleet hiding out near Sector 12. It appears to have two flight pods positioned beside the main hull.

"Alert" is the name given to the ship by designer James Hibbert [4]. The Alert is a Medical Ship capable of conducting medical evacuation of casualties in a larger capacity than a Raptor, Shuttle, or "Traveler" type vessel.

Galactica is one of the Colonial warships built in direct response to the generational war with the Cylon Empire.

Abilities

edit source

In addition to Viper support, Galactica's defensive and offensive potential includes energy shields, a battery of laser turrets and fusion missiles (ComicsClassic Battlestar Galactica Vol. 2 #11).

While Vipers are primarily used for reconnaissance patrols, Galactica also possesses unmanned probes, including those employing stealth (ComicsBattlestar Galactica: Cylon Apocalypse #1).

Locations

edit source

Core Command

edit source

Referred to by multiple terms, including bridge and command core, the central command nexus of Galactica coordinated not only internal ship operations but also the operations of the entire Fleet (ComicsClassic Battlestar Galactica Vol. 2 #6), (ComicsBattlestar Galactica: Death of Apollo #4).

The upper most tier of the command platform allows the operational commander to implement the ship's self-destruct sequence {vol1}

Detention Chamber

edit source

As a military ship, Galactica features a detention chamber capable of imprisoning Centurions for interrogation, equipped with a gamma frequency field generator to cut off the enemy from access to the Cylon's network. The chamber is outfitted with a restraining chair capable of holding a typical Mark V Centurion.

A sole survivor from a Centurion stealth team detached to Burania is imprisoned in the detention chamber following a failed incursion into Galactica's science deck, itself later destroyed — along with most of the chamber — after a test of the recovered nano-cybrid (ComicsBattlestar Galactica: Cylon Apocalypse #1).

Launch Bay

edit source
Major Apollo in one of Galactica's launch bays circa 7358 (ComicsBattlestar Galactica: Death of Apollo #5).

Galactica's has two launch bays, one port and one starboard, where the ship's various crafts are housed, maintained, launched and retrieved. The launch bays are accessible through one energy-shielded aperture aft of each pod.

Vipers are launched from tubes that egress from the outermost edge of the ship's flight pods for rapid deployment.

Science Deck

edit source

Galactica's science operations are established on a science deck, where scientists like Dr. Wilker operate in various laboratories.

A surviving nano-cybrid sample from Burania is brought to Wilker's lab, leading to an incursion by a Centurion stealth team that breaches the hull connecting said deck in an attempt to recover the disastrous nano-cybrid from Colonial hands (ComicsBattlestar Galactica: Cylon Apocalypse #1).

Server Room

edit source

Galactica utilizes bubble memory in its server room in 7335 (ComicsBattlestar Galactica: Starbuck #2).

While Boomer works to decrypt McKintosh's data chip, Diana destroys part of the server room to prevent this, as the data chip contains information that links Councillor Osiris into the attack on Umbra (ComicsBattlestar Galactica: Starbuck #2)(ComicsBattlestar Galactica: Starbuck #4).

Supply Vault

edit source

Galactica features a supply vault that can be defended against incursions.

During the capture of Galactica by Cylon forces, Apollo instructs Dwyer to bring the civilians and children to the third hangar[1] within the supply vault (ComicsClassic Battlestar Galactica Vol. 1 #5).

The Thousand-Yahren War

edit source

As one of the many battlestars active during the Thousand-Yahren War, it saw action during multiple engagements, including the Hasari Routs and the Second Siege of the Cosmora Archipelago (ComicsBattlestar Galactica: Cylon Apocalypse #1).

By 7335, Adama commands Galactica, with his eldest son and daughter, Apollo and Athena respectively, serving aboard. Boomer, Jolly and Starbuck would later serve aboard the ship following their graduation in 7335 (ComicsBattlestar Galactica: Starbuck #1).

Fleeing the Cylon Tyranny

edit source

Much of Galactica's operational history is refocused around shepherding its rag-tag, fugitive fleet from Cylons with strategically defensive and evasive postures, instead of offensive military operations. This is tested in the weeks following the exodus, particularly when Adama dispatches his finest warriors to a hazardous mission to Maytoria that results in immediate failure; in other circumstances, Adama would have engaged in an offensive operation to recover his pilots, but is overruled by the greater mission of shepherding the human race (ComicsClassic Battlestar Galactica Vol. 1 #1).

The events of Maytoria result in the first post-Cylon incursion of Galactica that, while ultimately thwarted, result in the deaths of numerous members of Galactica's crew (ComicsClassic Battlestar Galactica Vol. 1 #5).

Following the Battle at Galaxy's Edge, the Fleet happens across the Canopus wormhole, a potential shortcut to the fabled Earth. On the other side of this wormhole is a lone Cylon planet, consisting of a Cylon mainframe in a city known as Tessida. In order to make good on their escape from the Cylon tyranny, Adama makes use of Galactica's formidable offensive potential to stage an attack against this installation, utilizing its rarely-used lightspeed potential in order to surprise the Cylons while Vipers bomb the city with weaponized missiles, whose warheads are outfitted with a destructive and pervasive nano-cybrid (ComicsBattlestar Galactica: Cylon Apocalypse #3)(ComicsBattlestar Galactica: Cylon Apocalypse #4).

A "Second" Galactica

edit source
Galactica deploys its sensor shield (ComicsClassic Battlestar Galactica Vol. 2 #4).

Galactica was never commissioned in the alternate reality (ComicsClassic Battlestar Galactica Vol. 2 #3), as the divergent alternate reality's creation sprung from an overloaded temporal battery, thus removing Galactica from all existence in a temporal storm that only Apollo and Starbuck witness (ComicsClassic Battlestar Galactica Vol. 2 #1).

However, Galactica from the primary reality was transported—sans crew—into the alternate reality, becoming an incongruous element. It is discovered by pirates lead by the privateer Starbuck, who claim it as their own. Aboard her, Starbuck's crew of scientists and technicians acquire Cylon components, including an Imperious Leader, devising a variety of anti-Cylon technologies.

Such discoveries include the defensive sensor shield, rendering Galactica invisible to Cylon scanning technologies (ComicsClassic Battlestar Galactica Vol. 2 #4).

Galactica becomes the last known battlestar that Baltifer hunts for and nearly succeeds in finding, resulting in the Battle of Cache. After the temporally displaced Starbuck influences his alternate, Galactica becomes the lynchpin that allows not only the Colonial Resistance to seize its first decisive victory, but to repair history by saving itself from the Nebula Ambush (ComicsClassic Battlestar Galactica Vol. 2 #5).
