Additional Information

Prometheus is a Scorpia[1] freighter in the Fleet rumored to be so rife with illicit activity, it is "off the grid." It serves as the base of operations for the ex-mercenary Phelan and is the main trading hub for the Fleet's black market (TRS: "Black Market").

During refueling operations over a gas giant, a valve failure requires a restart of the unrep maneuver with Galactica (TRS: "Maelstrom").

She is captained by Doyle Franks post-passage, who is selected as one of five judges at Gaius Baltar's trial (TRS: "Crossroads, Part I")[2]. After the trial, Prometheus jumps into the Ionian nebula and loses power before a Cylon attack on the Fleet (TRS: "Crossroads, Part II").

Behind the Scenes

edit

The first appearance of Prometheus in the Fleet was in "Black Market," as the model was explicitly made for that episode by Alain Rivard.

As the original model was solely of hero quality, its use proved cumbersome for standard transitional and establishing shots. Thus, as with multiple models from Season 2, it would be upgraded and remastered into multiple versions (from low resolution for far shots to a high-quality "hero" model for close-up shots) in Season 3 by Gary Hutzel's in-house VFX team. This task was assigned to Fabio Passaro, who produced the prerequisite variations for use in updated filler and establishing shots depicting the Fleet.[3]

Notes

edit
  • The freighter is named from the Lord of Kobol Prometheus. The deity Prometheus is noted for taking fire from the Gods and giving it to the humans against Zeus' wishes. Given Tom Zarek's continual referencing of Admiral Adama as Zeus, and the fact that Prometheus is the hub of the black market, an organization which seeks to redistribute goods from the military to the civilians, the parallel is very apparent.

Prometheus is a Galactica type battlestar in service with the Colonial Fleet during the First Cylon War. Named after the Lord of Kobol Prometheus, the ship serves as one of the primary Colonial Fleet vessels during the conflict (TRS: "Blood and Chrome").

Service History

edit

Prometheus is one of the original twelve battlestars created during the Cylon War, serving alongside its sister ships Galactica and Columbia as a cornerstone of Colonial defense against Cylon forces. During the war, Prometheus participates in major combat operations against the Cylons, with Colonial propaganda highlighting the effectiveness of these three battlestars in prosecuting the war effort.

Notes

edit

The pre-production script for Blood and Chrome identifies Prometheus as one of Galactica's sister ships actively engaged in the Cylon War.[1] The script describes these battlestars in a wartime newsreel, noting that Galactica "along with its sister ships, Columbia and Prometheus, is showing the Cylon no quarter."

Notes

edit
  • Prometheus is named after the Lord of Kobol who stole fire from the gods and gave it to humanity, making it a fitting name for a warship defending human civilization against their robotic creations.
  • As a Galactica type battlestar, Prometheus would have shared the same basic design and capabilities as its famous sister ship, including non-networked computer systems that provided protection against Cylon computer viruses.
  • The ultimate fate of Prometheus during or after the Cylon War remains unknown, as the ship is only mentioned in the context of active wartime service.
