Later during the war, he was assigned back to Galactica as she investigated the plans of the Cylon entity known as Lachesis to use biological weapons upon the Twelve Colonies. Shortly after returning from the battle for the wreckage of the Galleon, Cottle is "promoted" to a desk job on Picon. Despite hating the idea of promotion, Cottle rejects the offer from Silas Nash to remain onboard the Galactica, claiming that serving onboard the battlestar had given him enough excitement for his lifetime.
He would continue serving in the Colonial Fleet following the end of the First Cylon War. His last position is as Chief Medical Officer, with the rank of Major, aboard battlestar Galactica up to, and following, the Fall of the Twelve Colonies decades later (Re-imagined Series).
