The Destruction of Picon Fleet Headquarters[1] takes place during the First Cylon War. In one of the many attacks during the war, Cylons launch a devastating orbital bombardment on Picon, targeting both Picon Fleet Headquarters and multiple capital cities on the colony.
Background
Understanding the threat of the new Jupiter-class battlestars, Cylons decide to attack Picon to target Picon Fleet Headquarters, the seat of Colonial Fleets leadership. This is days before Jupiter-class battlestar Athena, assigned to Picon as per the Articles of Colonization, is set for delivery and deployment to Picon.
Attack
The Cylons are able to launch a massive orbital bombardment, destroying Fleet Headquarters and many capital cities. Picon is in flames, the admiralty is annihilated, leading to the greatest potential of defeat that the Twelve Colonies of Kobol have ever been accustomed to.

Aftermath
Rear Admiral Lucinda Cain assumes command of Colonial Fleet from Daidalos, doubling both as the construction center for Project Jupiter and as the ad-hoc Colonial Fleet Headquarters leading the war effort against Cylon aggression. As she does so, Cylons also launch an attack on Daidalos and the Scorpion Fleet Shipyards as it prepares to depart for Picon (Battlestar Galactica Deadlock).
Notes
- It can be inferred that the Cylons attacked Picon knowing that Athena was days away from deployment, and seizing a window of opportunity presented by its absence.
