The infected basestar is the victim of an ancient contagion, lymphocytic encephalitis, found on a beacon found at the Lion's Head Nebula circa 3 ACH (2002BYR) in the wake of the Second Exodus.
Dispatched to this location using research provided by Gaius Baltar regarding the path to Earth, its crew discover the beacon and bring it aboard, becoming susceptible to the contagion that incapacitates the crew and its Hybrid, causing systemic damage and corruption affecting all Cylon technology aboard.
Aware of the virus, in order to prevent further spread of the contagion to the Cylon fleet, the Cylons dispatch Baltar using a captured Raptor to investigate, where he discovers the beacon but fails to disclose it to the Cylons.
Following Baltar's same research, the Colonials proceed to the nebula, where Sharon "Athena" Agathon and Margaret "Racetrack" Edmondson's Raptor happens upon the basestar (TRS: "Torn").
A Marine task force led by Lee "Apollo" Adama board the basestar, discovering the virus and its source. They bring back the information, and a group of surviving Humanoid Cylons, from the basestar before it self destructs (TRS: "A Measure of Salvation").
