McKintosh is a gambler whom Starbuck encounters following the death of Captain Wyler in 7335.
During a pyramid game, McKintosh learns about Starbuck's past relating to Umbra, and argues with Starbuck about the official story relating to the defense net. McKintosh claims to have been there the night of the attack as he ferried agro cargo from the factory at Umbra, and thus was able to obtain data that confirmed that the net was deactivated to allow the Cylons to attack.
Claiming that no one believed him, McKintosh wagers a data chip worn around his neck to Starbuck as a taunt, believing the newly minted Warrior didn't have a winning hand. Starbuck's full pyramid secured McKintosh's data chip with the alleged data, only for Starbuck to later discover that the chip was unreadable (Battlestar Galactica: Starbuck 1).
It isn't until yahrens later in 7346 that, following the loss of Starbuck's foster parents in a Cylon sneak attack on Scorpia, McKintosh's data becomes a point of interest. A series of events unfolds following Boomer's decryption of McKintosh's Umbra data (at Starbuck's renewed behest), which leads to McKintosh's death by Cylon hands aboard his own vessel.
Before his death, McKintosh records a holographic message relaying his story and key revelations that were not told before: he worked for Osiris and that he had an extra copy of the recording that not only captured the data on the attack in 7322, but also recorded the use of Osiris's own codes that were used to lower the defense net. Apollo recovers the disk hidden by McKintosh and transmits it to Galactica (Battlestar Galactica: Starbuck 3).
Per McKintosh's wishes, Starbuck avenges him by presenting this new data to the Quorum of Twelve and subsequently killing Osiris while defending President Adar's life (Battlestar Galactica: Starbuck 4).
