Valkyrie was a Colonial battlestar, belonging to Battlestar Group 41, under the command of William Adama before the Fall of the Twelve Colonies. The ship's class is not known.

Rank equivalences
Approximately six years before the Cylon attack, Valkyrie had been ordered by Admiral Corman to deploy a stealth recon ship over the Armistice Line to test Cylon resolve and gather intelligence on Cylon activities. During the mission, an unidentified DRADIS contact (presumed to have been a spacecraft) entered the area of the stealth ship piloted by Lieutenant Daniel Novacek and damaged the Stealthstar's engines before jumping away.

These ranks have been speculatively expanded in order to provide a rough rank equivalence with the United States Navy. Many aspects of the following table are speculative.
Two further (presumed Cylon) contacts were detected on an intercept course with the stealth ship. Rather than attempt a rescue of the disabled craft, Commander Adama ordered the stealth ship to be destroyed to prevent its discovery and capture.

The following table exists mainly to improve understanding of Colonial ranks for those familiar with the US military and similarly structured organizations. However, while the Colonial Fleet has many parallels with modern armed forces, it also diverges from them in certain places, for example in the duties of commanders and admirals, or the place of the CAG within the ship's hierarchy. Therefore, the emphasis is on placing the ranks in their most appropriate place within the Battlestar Galactica universe, which is why they don't necessarily match perfectly with modern ranks.
In the days and years following the incident at the Armistice Line, and in particular after the Cylon attack on the Colonies, Adama came to believe that his actions had provoked the Cylon assault, having "proved" to them that humanity was aggressive and not to be trusted (Hero).
The officer ranks of the Colonial Marine Corps have yet to be established on screen or by official sources and thus are not listed here (see Official Statements). The Marine Corps's enlisted ranks seen so far mirror real world ranks.

The eventual fate of Valkyrie is not known, but she is presumed to have been destroyed along with the rest of the Colonial Fleet (except Galactica and Pegasus) during the Cylon assault on the Twelve Colonies.

*In the Extended Version of the episode "Pegasus", Adama states "Fleet promoted her to rear admiral over half of the commanders on the list." This could also indicate that commander is not a flag rank in the BSG universe.
*A screen capture of Galacticas Dradis shows two stars next to Pegasus. It is speculated that this denotes Cain as a two-star admiral.
*When Adama is promoted to admiral in "Resurrection Ship, Part II" his new rank insignia are identical to Cain's.
*Cain seems to command both her battlestar and its Battlestar Group. In modern practice, a captain commands only the ship, while a rear admiral is in charge of the Carrier Strike Group.
*While Cain wears the traditional Rear Admiral work uniform with gold piping over silver piping, Adama continues to wear his Commander work uniform with red piping over gold piping after his promotion to admiral.  This was most likely done so that the producers didn't have to create a new set of uniforms for him, but could be explained within the plot line as simply being a neccessity caused by the inavailability of Rear Admiral work uniforms on Galactica following the attacks on the colonies.

One theory holds that the Valkyrie type battlestar is an intermediate model to Galactica and Pegasus. However, it is more likely that it is just as a new a design as the Mercury Class but was designed for an entirely different purposeThe overall design shares more commonalities with the Mercury class, such as the non-retracting flight pods and the shape of the bow. In addition, the CIC is nearly identical to that of Pegasus , as are the electronics and instrumentation. However, the Valkyrie appears to be designed more for covert operations and stealth whereas the Mercury Class was designed more as an allout assault platform. This can be seen from the fact that unlike the Mercury Class, Valkyrie only has two flight decks not four (it doesn't have the need for quick fighter recovery); and unlike both the Mercury Class and Columbia (Galactica) Class, the viper launch tubes are mounted underneath the flight pods as opposed to on the sides which allows for the mounting of special weapons battaries not seen on either the Mercury or Columbia Class.

| Commander <ref name="commander">Commander:
*The rank of commander is somewhat unclear and also encompasses duties of both modern admirals and captains. The best indications point to it being an intermediate rank between that of Captain and Rear Admiral in the U.S. Navy.  The term "Battlestar Group" in the BSG universe has two different meanings.  Formally, a Battlestar Group consists of multiple battlestars and are generally under the overall command of a Rear Admiral, these are the battlestar groups referred to by the BSG numbers at the bottom of each battlestar's seal. However, the term can also be used to describe a single battlestar and it's support ships when said battlestar is operating on it's own.  In this case the whole group is generally under the command of a Commander who also commands the group's battlestar.  Thus the difference between a U.S. Navy Captain, a Colonial Commander and a Rear Admiral is that a U.S. Navy Captain's command is generally limited to one ship while a Colonial Commander is in charge of a single large capital ship (a battlestar) as well as any support vessels that accompany it and a Rear Admiral commands multiple large capital warships.
*It is also possible that in addition to serving as XOs on battlestars, officer's with the rank of Colonel may also command smaller support vessels attached to battlestars.  That would explain why a Colonel is considered a senior officer while a Major is not even though battlestar XOs tend to be assigned as Majors and then promoted to Colonel only after completion of their first tour of duty as an XOThis justifies equating the rank of Colonel in the Colonial Fleet with that of Captain in the U.S. Navy.

Valkyrie is seen firing a ship-to-ship missile from what appears to be one of its gun turrets. It is not clear whether Valkyrie carries missile batteries resembling gun turrets or if her guns are able to fire some type of rocket-boosted, homing munition. Regardless, her turrets are of a different design than those seen on Galactica or Pegasus.

The main premise behind this table is that there is enough circumstantial evidence to equate the rank of commander with captain, and leave rear admiral as such (see footnotes), albeit combining the American split in lower and upper halves. Additionally, the Battlestar Galactica ranks should be equated with ranks that come close to their role in the series. It is also desirable to oppose the ranks of ensign to lieutenant one to one. While one could devise a structure that provides a direct equivalence of each rank with a real world counterpart, it should be kept in mind that the Colonial Fleet is a fictional organization and works similar to but not identical to real world navies. The above table was felt to be a reasonable compromise between documenting the Battlestar Galactica universe by itself and analyzing its rank structure in a real world context.
At least two unnamed battlestars matching Valkyrie's design are docked at the Scorpion Fleet Shipyards when it is destroyed (Razor).

Valkyrie is the third (second onscreen) instance of Norse mythology being used, the first being Ragnar Station, which is a reference to Ragnarok, the Norse "twilight of the gods" (Miniseries).
**Curiously, the story of Ragnarok parallels with the career of William Adama, the former commander of Valkyrie. Adama, considered a fallen hero by the admiralty, is transferred from the advanced Valkyrie to command the aging Galactica about a year before the Cylon attack. Later, with the fall of the Colonies, he finds himself in the Battle of Ragnar Anchorage, the last battle within Colonial space.

*In a  blog entry on February 19, 2005 Ronald Moore gave a little insight into the rank structure of Battlestar Galactica:
<blockquote>"What is the rank structure? It doesn't seem consistant with the Navy." <br>

The rank structure is derived from the original series. I didn't want to change Commander Adama to Captain Adama or Colonel Tigh to Commander Tigh, so I elected to simply embrace the co-mingled nature of the original rank structure. For our internal purposes, we've decided that the ranks are indeed a mixture of naval and army nomenclature and are basically as follows:<br>

Officers:
*Admiral
*Commander
*Colonel
*Major
*Captain
*Lieutenant
*Lieutenant (junior grade)
*Ensign

Enlisted:
*Master Chief Petty Officer
*Chief Petty Officer
*Petty Officer (1st, 2nd Class)
*Specialist
*Deck Hand
*Recruit

Just to complicate matters further, there are also Marines aboard Galactica which conform more closely to the traditional enlisted Marine ranks, with Sergeants, Sergeant-Majors (sic), etc. Unresolved is the question of whether the Marine officers would also adhere to the mixed rank structure (which sounds odd) or if they are strictly army equivalents (which makes no sense given that the "Navy" ranks seem oblivious to there being any such distinction). Aren't you glad you asked?</blockquote>

Valkyrie was a Colonial battlestar, belonging to Battlestar Group 41, under the command of William Adama before the Fall of the Twelve Colonies. The ship's class is not known.

Approximately six years[1] before the Cylon attack, Valkyrie had been ordered by Admiral Corman to deploy a stealth recon ship over the Armistice Line to test Cylon resolve and gather intelligence on Cylon activities. During the mission, an unidentified DRADIS contact (presumed to have been a spacecraft) entered the area of the stealth ship piloted by Lieutenant Daniel Novacek and damaged the Stealthstar's engines before jumping away.

Two further (presumed Cylon) contacts were detected on an intercept course with the stealth ship. Rather than attempt a rescue of the disabled craft, Commander Adama ordered the stealth ship to be destroyed to prevent its discovery and capture.

In the days and years following the incident at the Armistice Line, and in particular after the Cylon attack on the Colonies, Adama came to believe that his actions had provoked the Cylon assault, having "proved" to them that humanity was aggressive and not to be trusted (Hero).

The eventual fate of Valkyrie is not known, but she is presumed to have been destroyed along with the rest of the Colonial Fleet (except Galactica and Pegasus) during the Cylon assault on the Twelve Colonies.

Valkyrie type battlestar

One theory holds that the Valkyrie type battlestar is an intermediate model to Galactica and Pegasus. However, it is more likely that it is just as a new a design as the Mercury Class but was designed for an entirely different purpose. The overall design shares more commonalities with the Mercury class, such as the non-retracting flight pods and the shape of the bow. In addition, the CIC is nearly identical to that of Pegasus [2], as are the electronics and instrumentation.

At least two unnamed battlestars matching Valkyrie's design are docked at the Scorpion Fleet Shipyards when it is destroyed (Razor).

 • In mythology, a Valkyrie is a minor female deity who chose the most heroic fallen warriors to ascend to Valhalla where they would await Ragnarok. Valkyrie is the third (second onscreen) instance of Norse mythology being used, the first being Ragnar Station, which is a reference to Ragnarok, the Norse "twilight of the gods" (Miniseries).
