There is conjecture amongst fans that all these appearances may have been character development of the same role, Lomas, and he was keen to prove himself and become a Colonial Warrior, and subsequently a less antagonistic member of Galactica staff.
It was understood that Security Officers had a poor relationship with Warriors, due to failing aptitude tests, and Lomas perhaps overcame this as a seasoned Security Officer, with added responsibility, when he had closer contact with Command Staff after beginning as a deckhand and transferring to Security.
It is likely his infamous run-in with "[[Colonel Tigh]]" may have brought about this change of focus. Lomas seems to have functioned in a wide variety of areas on Galactica and was enthusiastic about his work. This would explain him undertaking additional studies and duties as everybody in the fleet was encouraged to retrain to maximum potential.
The only anomaly is his seeming 'demotion' in "[[Baltar's Escape]]" but it is possible circumstances required him to be present to assist in a difficult security issue due to his experience.
As Viper Pilots changed squadron often, it is possible fleet needs also moved Lomas.
Perhaps 'Corporal' Lomas was merely a trainee himself in "[[The man with nine lives]]".
He would, therefore, have been supervising applicants to the highly advertised and necessary 'Warrior recruitment program' seconded from his regular security work for assessment in interpersonal skills, and as a person new initiates could relate to.
