The ship is unique in that as well as traditional living and working space on board, Cloud 9 incorporates a huge pressurized dome, that provides a realistic simulation of a planetary surface, including gardens, buildings, trees, and even an artificial holographic sky. Not only does the dome make this ship more luxurious, but the comfortable hotel rooms, as well as the enjoyable lounges and bars, make this ship popular and well-known to the survivors.

After her flight from captivity in Galacticas brig, President Roslin, along with Captain Lee Adama and priest Elosha, flee in a Raptor to Cloud 9 in order hide from Colonel Tigh and Commander Adama. The group is taken in by Tom Zarek, who meets with them on in a hangar on the ship. Cloud 9s high volume of intraship traffic makes it virtually impossible for Galactica to track their final hiding place (Resistance).
Cloud 9 is also unique in the fact that it is one of the few fleet ships with an asymmetrical design. The ship is split into a long, slim main section that houses the ship's landing bay, numerous hotel suites, and the sublight engines, while the massive dome is connected off the starboard side via a small connecting walkway. This design makes it impossible for Cloud 9 to attain atmospheric flight, as the forces involved would tear the ship apart.

Cloud 9 also has a swimming area. Commander Adama's orders shore leave for Colonel Tigh, advising him to take a swim and relax from his unexpected command duties when Adama was injured. Many of Cloud 9s accommodations are more like hotel rooms than bunks or seats, pointing to its original purpose as a luxury liner. A passenger, Shevon, lives in one such room (Room L258, L Deck), where Captain Adama visits her for intimate moments. Shevon is removed from her room by Phelan's thugs, and Captain Adama later finds the killer of Commander Jack Fisk in the room, dead of a gunshot to the head (Black Market).  The Cylon sympathizer/terrorist group Demand Peace also operates out of a suite located onboard Cloud 9 (Epiphanies).

Additional Information

Cloud 9 is a massive, FTL-capable luxury liner within the Fleet. Extensively damaged during the Cylon attack, it had to be evacuated while repairs were made. Following the repairs, it is returned to full service within the Fleet, and provides a venue for the first sitting of the interim Quorum of Twelve convened by President Roslin (TRS: "Colonial Day").

Design[edit]

The ship is unique in that as well as traditional living and working space on board, Cloud 9 incorporates a huge pressurized dome, that provides a realistic simulation of a planetary surface, including gardens, buildings, trees, and even an artificial holographic sky. Not only does the dome make this ship more luxurious, but the comfortable hotel rooms, as well as the enjoyable lounges and bars, make this ship popular and well-known to the survivors.

Illicit Passengers[edit]

The Starlight Lounge (TRS: "Sacrifice").

While Cloud 9 is used and enjoyed by many people just looking for an escape, the ship is also home to numerous underground "black market" activities, including prostitution, drug smuggling, and even the Cylon sympathizer/terrorist group, Demand Peace, led by Royan Jahee and Gina Inviere. Inviere is able to acquire a nuclear device aboard courtesy of Dr. Gaius Baltar, shocking Jahee (TRS: "Black Market", "Epiphanies").

Later, the Starlight Lounge bar aboard ship is the scene of a hostage crisis in which a disgruntled Sesha Abinell and her brother-in-law Kern Vinson, along with Nelson Page and George Chu, hold many people hostage, including Lee "Apollo" Adama, Anastasia Dualla, Billy Keikeya and Ellen Tigh. With the help of several gunmen, she demands that Sharon Valerii be turned over in order to take revenge for an earlier Cylon attack on the Fleet which left her husband dead. She and her co-conspirators are ultimately killed when the lounge is stormed by Colonial Marines, although not without civilian losses (TRS: "Sacrifice").

Destruction[edit]

Cloud 9's destruction (TRS: "Lay Down Your Burdens, Part II").

Following the jump to New Caprica, Cloud 9 falls victim to Gina Inviere, and her smuggled warhead after she deliberately sets the warhead to go off after a small countdown. The ship, and at least four others around Cloud 9's vicinity are instantly destroyed in a massive explosion. This disaster would have severe ramifications after the Cylon fleet, over a light year away, detects, and tracks the signature to the Colonial's settlement, leading to the Cylon occupation of New Caprica (TRS: "Lay Down Your Burdens, Part II").

Notes[edit]

 • The origin of the term "cloud nine" is curious in that it is an American expression popularized in the 20th Century as a term describing euphoria or higher state of bliss. The term appeared to originate from the 1896 edition of the International Cloud Atlas, where the cumulonimbus cloud was given the designation of nine, which was the highest altitude that a cloud could be, according to information from the Wiktionary. However, it is just one of many terms of Earth-origin used on the show.
 • Cloud 9 was filmed on location at the University of British Columbia's Chan Centre.
 • It should be noted that in either "Razor" or "The Plan," both set prior to Cloud 9's destruction, the large vessel neither appeared nor was mentioned. Furthermore, after the one-year jump in "Lay Down Your Burdens, Part II," its destruction hasn't been mentioned again throughout the remainder of the series.
