Lieutenant Matt "Caustic" Fanale is pilot of a Viper Mark VII during a skirmish against several Cylon Raiders as his ship, Pegasus are called to investigate a distress signal near Cylon space, as well as a missing battlestar, Chronos.

He discovers that the Cylons are trying to use electronic countermeasures against his fighter. However, with his Viper's antiquated avionics software and not the newer flight software, the Cylons are unsuccessful in affecting his fighter.

Outnumbered and having problems with his fighter, the pilot is killed in the fight (Battlestar Galactica: Pegasus).

• Brandon Jerwa is the writer of both Battlestar Galactica: Zarek and Battlestar Galactica: Pegasus and has admitted to a tendency of using real life people for his supporting characters. As such, the character's name is a "cameo" for Matt Fanale, the lead member of the Industrial / Hardcore band, Caustic.
