The Guatrau is the title of the leader of the Ha'la'tha crime syndicate on Caprica.
Caprican Guatrau
edit sourceAround 88 BCH (12YR), orphans Sam and Joseph Adama came across the Guatrau in his youth; Sam picked his pocket, and in doing so endeared themselves to him, effectively raising them as his own children (CAP: "The Dirteaters").
As part of that, the Guatrau paid for law school for Sam's brother, Joseph Adama, who provides legal defense and other services for the Ha'la'tha in Caprica City in 58 BCH (42YR). The Guatrau meets personally with Joseph to convince him to threaten then Minister of Defense Val Chambers. When that fails, Sam is sent to assassinate Chambers. Despite Joseph's failure, the Guatrau then promises Joseph that he is committed to finding the perpetrators of the MLMT bombing that had recently claimed Joseph's wife and daughter (CAP: "Pilot").
Some months later, the Guatrau meets with Daniel Graystone at the wealthy industrialist's behest. With the aid of both Adama brothers, the Guatrau enters into a mutually beneficial alliance with Graystone, offering to help him regain control of his company, Graystone Industries, in return for profit made from Graystone's newest venture―virtual avatars of dead people (CAP: "Unvanquished").
Despite his dealings with Graystone, the Guatrau is personal friends with Tomas Vergis of the Vergis Corporation (CAP: "Pilot" and "Know Thy Enemy"). However, once Vergis discovers that the Ha'la'tha were behind Graystone's reappointment as CEO of Graystone Industries, he believes that the Guatrau would eventually have him killed, prompting him to kill himself instead (CAP: "Things We Lock Away").
The Guatrau's sales of U-87 Cyber Combat Units's to the Soldiers of the One cause a rift between the Guatrau and Sam Adama, which Graystone exploits when he supports Sam's efforts to export U-87s to Tauron resistance fighters (CAP: "The Dirteaters").
Through his daughter, Fidelia Fazekas, the Guatrau later unearths this, prompting the pained Guatrau to order Fazekas to kill the Adama brothers — this results not in their deaths, but in the death of Joseph's only surviving child, Willie Adama (CAP: "The Heavens Will Rise" and "Here Be Dragons"). The Adama brothers seek retribution for Willie's murder and, in order to avoid an all-out conflict with the Ha'la'tha, manage to convince Fazekas to launch a coup against the Guatrau. This coup results in the murder of the Guatrau during what was to be a meeting between the two parties, and Fazekas assuming the position of Guatrau herself (CAP: "Apotheosis").
Notes
edit source- The name of the particular Guatrau featured in this article is never given. His surname is possibly Fazekas, as this is the surname of his daughter.
- In his conversation with Samuel Adama, Daniel Graystone notes that the Guatrau he serves is no more Tauron than he is, revealing the then-Guatrau's Caprican heritage (CAP: "The Dirteaters").
