Melanie is the only daughter of Michael, born to the Lunar colonies of Terra.

Melanie is unable to live on Terra due to her inability to breathe in high-pressure atmospheres, a genetic trait handed down by her father.

Although we don't know who the mother is, indications are that she died at the hands of the Eastern Alliance.

With her father, Sarah Fowler, and her own children, they move to Paradeen and settle there with the help of their once-resistant neighbors of this planet ^{(TOS: "Greetings from Earth")}.
