Line 1: Line 1:
As can be seen clearly in Act of Contrition, Galactica's combat ability is as limited by her manpower as her mechanical resources. The following is a list of Galactica's current and former Viper pilots, Raptor pilots, and ECOs.

:This list was created to keep track of Galactica's and Pegasus' current and former Viper pilots, Raptor pilots and ECOs. When mentioned-only characters are linked to a separate article, they are either repeatedly mentioned, have some significance despite not being seen or the article includes a note about their name.

Active
Pilots are officers in the Colonial Fleet trained and qualified to operate a Viper fighter or a Raptor multipurpose vehicle.

Vipers
Pilot candidates, or "nuggets," normally start training in simulators, but after the Fall of the Twelve Colonies, Galacticas nuggets went from classroom straight into live aircraft until Pegasus (with its on-board flight simulators) joined the Fleet. Once nuggets complete their basic flight and combat training, they are known as "Rooks".
* Capt. Lee "Apollo" Adama - currently on parole after his mutiny in Kobol's Last Gleaming, Part II
* Lt. (?) Symes - senior pilot after Capt. Adama and Lt. Thrace (Fragged)
* Cadet Brendan "Hot Dog" Constanza
* Cadet "Kat" Katraine
* 20 others (at most)

Others: As of the Mini-Series, Starbuck informs Cmdr. Adama that "there are 20 of us climbing the walls down in the Ready Room". This is excluding the 20 members of Ripper's wing already sortied, and Apollo, on escort detail, and probably doesn't include ECOs.
A flight-qualified pilot wears basic pilot wings on the uniform's left breast. Senior-rated pilots (e.g. William Adama, Saul Tigh) wear a variation with outstretched wings.

After the deaths of Flat Top, 12 other pilots, and the severe injury of 7 more (20 total), there were 11 pilots and ECOs present in the ready room including Apollo, Starbuck, Boomer and Crashdown.
Pilot wings are a permanently-awarded skills badge; they do not necessarily indicate active flight status, only that the wearer has successfully qualified as a pilot. Officers who have moved into non-flying positions, such as Aaron Kelly and Felix Gaeta, continue to wear them.

Later, Capt. Adama states to Lt. Thrace that there are 21 pilots remaining, by which he probably refers only to the Viper pilots. (If this number includes Raptor pilots and ECOs as well, then it is contradicted by the survival of 2 Raptor ECO's by the time of Fragged, two episodes after an 18-Viper strong sortie in Scattered, at a time when there would have been at most 19 total survivors.) It is difficult to imagine that Sergeant Hadrian made the same distinction when she referred to the thirteen killed and seven injured in the incident, since the most notable victim was actually a Raptor, not a Viper pilot.

Of the 11 present for funeral services, at least one (Crashdown) and possibly two (unidentified #4?) are known to be ECOs. Racetrack and the fourth ECO are clearly not present. Another one (Boomer) and possibly two (unidentified #5 or #7?) are known to be Raptor pilots. This leaves 7, at most 9 Viper pilots depicted in this scene. Adding the 7 injured pilots, we have a total of 14-16 accounted for, meaning 5-7 surviving and uninjured pilots must not have been present for some reason (perhaps performing a Combat Air Patrol). 8 nuggets were then recruited to fill out the ranks, including Kat, Hot Dog and Chuckles, bringing the total to 29.

In The Hand of God, a total of 19 vipers and 2 raptors are deployed. Starbuck is inactive at this time due to her knee injury. Fireball, Chuckles, Stepchild and one unidentified pilot are killed in this operation, leaving the total at 25.

In Scattered, Galactica fields 18 vipers. If no other pilots than Flyboy were killed in Valley of Darkness, this means Galactica has at most 24 pilots remaining.

Raptors
The following mentioned-only characters have been identified by name. They may be identical with any of the mentioned-only characters identified by call sign, listed below.
* Unidentified pilot of Raptor 1 in Fragged.
* Two others (at least)

Others: Galactica is able to field six raptors simultaneously in Kobol's Last Gleaming, Part II. The crews of Raptor 1 and Raptor 3 are accounted for. Boomer then pilots a raptor to the Cylon Basestar in orbit of Kobol, while three Raptors are sent to board Colonial One. These three probably did not need ECOs, given the target's lack of defensive options, but they certainly required pilots.

<br/>The following mentioned-only characters have been identified by callsign. They may be identical with any of the mentioned-only characters identified by name, listed above. Note: The survival of two specialist ECOs by the time of Fragged means Apollo's headcount of surviving pilots in Act of Contrition could not have included them.

Note: Cmdr. William "Husker" Adama flew a Viper Mk. II during the Cylon War, and can also pilot a Raptor (as seen in Tigh Me Up, Tigh Me Down). Col. Saul Tigh was also a Viper pilot of the same vintage, but there is less to suggest he has retained any sort of flight status.

Note: Apollo, who accompanied the boarding party in Kobol's Last Gleaming, Part II, may be qualified to fly a Raptor, given his background as a test pilot, but he pointedly does not do so in Fragged, choosing to fly in the passenger seat.

Latest revision as of 04:07, 22 February 2024

This list was created to keep track of Galactica's and Pegasus' current and former Viper pilots, Raptor pilots and ECOs. When mentioned-only characters are linked to a separate article, they are either repeatedly mentioned, have some significance despite not being seen or the article includes a note about their name.

Pilots are officers in the Colonial Fleet trained and qualified to operate a Viper fighter or a Raptor multipurpose vehicle.

Pilot candidates, or "nuggets," normally start training in simulators, but after the Fall of the Twelve Colonies, Galactica's nuggets went from classroom straight into live aircraft until Pegasus (with its on-board flight simulators) joined the Fleet. Once nuggets complete their basic flight and combat training, they are known as "Rooks".

A flight-qualified pilot wears basic pilot wings on the uniform's left breast. Senior-rated pilots (e.g. William Adama, Saul Tigh) wear a variation with outstretched wings.

Pilot wings are a permanently-awarded skills badge; they do not necessarily indicate active flight status, only that the wearer has successfully qualified as a pilot. Officers who have moved into non-flying positions, such as Aaron Kelly and Felix Gaeta, continue to wear them.

A flight suit, which protects a pilot during a decompression emergency, is standard apparel for all pilots.

Qualifications legend:

V - Viper pilot
R - Raptor pilot
E - Raptor ECO
O - Other craft [1]

Homages to real persons[edit]

The following pilots are homages to people working on the show or related to its production. Since they may only exist in behind-the-scenes photos and not featured on screen, they don't necessarily exist within the show's continuity.

Rank Name Source Note
Admiral Ronald D. "Caveman" Moore Behind-the-scenes photo A reference to show runner Ronald D. Moore.
Captain Kevin "Silent" Smith Behind-the-scenes photo This is an homage to actor, director and writer Kevin Smith, who was considered to direct an episode of the fourth season.

Non-Canon[edit]

This is a list of names of pilots who have been identified as not being in the series canon, based on the following conditions:

 1. The name is derived from a nameplate that was production made, and;
 2. The name directly contradicts known, established canon.
Rank Name Source Note
Lieutenant Gwen "Red Devil" Fleer Nameplate auctioned off during the Official Battlestar Props and Costumes Auction. A nameplate likely made for Steve Fleer, who shares the same callsign, last name, and rank. Nameplate was likely made before production changes rendered it obsolete.
