Gage is a Specialist serving on the battlestar Pegasus in the wake of the Fall of the Twelve Colonies, and later on Galactica following the Second Exodus.

Biography

Gage is among Pegasus crewmembers who help themselves to alcohol from a still set up by Galactica's deckhands when the two battlestars are operating together.

Much to Chief Galen Tyrol's and Lieutenant Karl "Helo" Agathon's discomfort, Gage and a handful of other Pegasus crewmembers describe the gang rapes perpetrated by members of the Pegasus crew against a captured copy of Number Six who called herself Gina Inviere. These assaults were apparently led and tacitly encouraged by Pegasus' "Cylon interrogator," Lieutenant Alastair Thorne. Gage mentions that he got in line twice ^{(TRS: "Pegasus")}.

In retaliation for Thorne's death at Agathon's hands, Specialists Gage and Vireem — with the assistance of two Marines — bind and begin beating the incarcerated Agathon and Tyrol in the Pegasus brig, until Colonel Jack Fisk catches them in the act and dresses them down ^{(TRS: "Resurrection Ship, Part II")}.

After the destruction of Pegasus, Gage transfers to the crew of Galactica.

Following the discovery of the devastated Earth, Gage joins Felix Gaeta's mutiny against Admiral William Adama. He leads a group of mutineers on a raid of the Agathons' quarters, kidnapping both officers and their daughter, the human-Cylon hybrid Hera Agathon. Gage confronts Agathon directly, asserting that Thorne's death and Agathon's subsequent promotion were both unjust, and has Agathon beaten into unconsciousness. He also threatens to rape Sharon and makes a second threat against her when he deposits her in the brig. Specialist Gage then takes over Gaeta's tactical position in CIC after Gaeta assumes command of Galactica ^{(TRS: "The Oath")}.

Gage never follows through on his threats. Mere hours after the rebellion begins, Adama and his supporters retake the CIC. The mutineers surrender without resistance, and Gage is taken into custody along with the rest ^{(TRS: "Blood on the Scales")}.

Specialist Gage is presumably incarcerated on Astral Queen for his role in the mutiny.

• Gage and Vireem are referred to collectively as the "Sunshine Boys" by Helo, and as the "Yee-Haw Boys" by Ron Moore in the podcast for "Resurrection Ship, Part II".

Behind the scenes

Actor Mike Dopud described Gage in blunt terms in a 2022 interview, characterizing the through line of the character as entirely self-serving:

Gage was such an asshole, for lack of a better term. He was, he just didn't care... Specialist Gage was a guy that looked after himself. That's all he cared about. [He didn't care] about anything else. And that's the way I approached him, and I think it was right. That was the tone, and that was what was necessary from Gage.

Dopud credited the working relationship with director Wayne Rose as a factor in Gage's return in Season 4. He noted that the 2007–08 Writers Guild of America strike had disrupted availability for several cast members at the time Galactica's final season was being produced, but that the production worked around his own schedule to bring the character back.

Dopud also praised his scene partners, Tahmoh Penikett and Aaron Douglas, noting that the broader Vancouver acting community made those confrontational scenes effective:

Tahmoh and Aaron were great. We have such a wonderful community in Vancouver as far as actors, and very giving actors. So whenever you get a chance to work with these guys, these people, it's amazing.

In the same interview, host David Read noted the weight of Gage's initial appearance: "You're in one and a half scenes, one scene, and it's such a potent moment that they're like, 'Let's bring him back,' two seasons later."
