Heffren is the captain of the Valnic-class freighter, Freighter Eighteen.
After his freighter suffers engine failure and is left behind by the Fleet, Heffren and his crew are attacked by Cylons. The Cylon boarding party kills his crew and implants Heffren with an impulse microvator, turning him into an unwitting pawn in a plan to destroy Galactica (Comics: Look-In Magazine: Storyline 1).[1]
Aboard Galactica, Heffren befriends Boxey. While building a model ship in a bottle, he tells Boxey stories of his past, including tales of a genuine replica boat he used to work on at Lake Karkk on the Ninth Colony. Shortly after this, the Imperious Leader activates the device in Heffren's brain. Under Cylon control, Heffren makes his way to the fuel room to sabotage the battlestar. When Boxey follows and tries to intervene, the Imperious Leader orders Heffren to kill the boy (Comics: Look-In Magazine: Storyline 1).[2]
The plot is foiled by Adama and Tigh. Heffren is later captured and the microvator is surgically removed. Upon his recovery, Heffren expresses deep regret for his actions and pledges to make up for them (Comics: Look-In Magazine: Storyline 1).[3]
