The blindingly bright starfield called the Nova of Madagon (TOS: "Saga of a Star World").

The Nova of Madagon is a spacial location lying somewhere between the Twelve Colonies and the planet Carillon.

It is not actually a nova at all, but is a starfield of intense, blinding brightness; this "nova" also causes electronic equipment problems for smaller craft. The Straits of Madagon, a passage within this area of space, were mined by the Cylons, though these are cleared by a group of three Vipers lead by Captain Apollo (TOS: "Saga of a Star World").

Tie-in Material Information

edit
The Nova of Madagon is a space corridor near the heart of the Cyranus Galaxy densely packed with small, bright stars. The stars' brilliance and their complex gravitational interactions make navigation through the Nova extremely dangerous. The Nova was thought to be wholly impassable after being mined by the Cylons, but a path was cleared by three members of the Galactica's Blue Squadron: Apollo, Starbuck and Boomer. [1]

In the separate continuity

edit

The Nova of Madagon lies in between the path taken by the Fleet during their exodus from Twelve Colonies of Man and the planet Carillon. As Carillon was a "nine centon"[2] journey via a more circuitous route, Captain Apollo convinces the newly-reformed Council of Twelve that the only way to avoid the Cylon trap at Borallus was to cut through the Nova of Madagon, destroying the minefield that the Cylons had laid using Vipers and laser torpedoes (ComicsExodus!).

The cockpits were fully covered to prevent the blindness of the three pilots—Apollo, Boomer, and Starbuck—while they cleared a 100 maxim wide path through the minefield to Carillon. The starfield's energies were such that the Vipers' scanners failed, and thus had to be guided by Galactica's sensor suite (ComicsDeathtrap!).

Notes

edit
  • The interior of the nova was created using a one-watt laser reflected from multiple surfaces[3], in particular Richard Edlund's Saturn Award trophy that he received for his work on 1977's Star Wars.[4]
