Zak Adama was the youngest son of William and Carolanne Adama and brother of Lee Adama.

A young William Adama with his sons Zak and Lee (TRS: "Miniseries").

Adama endeavored to prove himself to his father by becoming a Viper pilot (TRS: "Miniseries") . During his training, Adama became romantically involved with his flight instructor, Kara Thrace.

While Zak Adama questioned how he passed basic flight, he accepted it without further question when Thrace stated that she wouldn't have passed him if he didn't deserve it. He did not want any help from his father, and certainly not from Thrace.

In reality, Adama failed three critical maneuvers during the last part of the basic flight training and (according to Thrace) had "no feel for flying" (TRS: "Miniseries"). Thrace cared for Zak Adama so deeply, however, that she felt that she couldn't be the one to crush his dreams, and passed him despite of his lack of skill.

Adama and Thrace were romantically involved when he invited his brother, Lee Adama, to dinner at Thrace's apartment in Delphi to meet her. Thrace had already painted the mandala on her wall by that time (TRS: "Daybreak, Part I").

Thrace and Adama were engaged to be married, but Adama was killed in an accident while flying two years prior to the Fall of the Twelve Colonies. Thrace first met Zak's father, then-Commander William Adama, in the aftermath of the accident. Zak's death became a wedge between his brother and father until Thrace confessed her responsibility in the matter prior to a mission of her own which lead the Adamas to risk much in finding the missing Thrace (TRS: "Act of Contrition", "You Can't Go Home Again").

Notes[edit]

Kara Thrace's photo with Zak (left), Lee (right) and herself (Middle) in the Miniseries.
  • Zak Adama is first seen in a photograph in the Miniseries, where he is played by Clarke Hudson.[1] His role was recast for the series.
  • Unlike his Original Series counterpart, Zac, Zak Adama is deceased before the events of the Miniseries, while Zac (played by Rick Springfield) is the first human killed by the Cylons in the Original Series pilot, "Saga of a Star World"; the attack begins approximately ten minutes into that episode.
  • Notably missing from the parallel existence of the Adama brothers in the Re-imagined Series and brothers Captain Apollo and Zac in the Original Series is the character of Athena, sibling of Apollo and Zac. The series creators determined that there wasn't a clear reason to recreate a parallel of Athena for the Re-imagined Series. As of Season 3, Athena has been taken on as the new callsign for Sharon "Athena" Agathon.
  • Zak Adama in the Re-imagined Series is an amalgamation of the Original Series siblings Zac and Athena, both being the children of Commander Adama and siblings of Apollo who hold an inferior military rank to Apollo. From Zac, Zak gets his name and gender. From Athena, Zak gets his status as a trainee pilot ("nugget") instructed by his/her romantic interest, Starbuck.

For the canonical character from which this character is based, see: Zak Adama.
For the character with the same callsign, "Buster", see: Richard Bayer.

Zak "Buster" Adama is the son of William Adama who died two years prior to the Fall of the Twelve Colonies during his qualifying run.

Adama was engaged to Kara Thrace, his flight instructor. Due to her feelings for Adama, she passed him, despite her knowing that he was the "worst flier I ever trained." As proof of this, Adama has a scar on his left hand, which was a result of slamming his hand as he closed a Viper cockpit during his first day of flight training. However, his one strength was that he was a better shot than Kara Thrace (Battlestar Galactica 1).

On his graduation day from the Colonial Fleet's training center, his father told Zak that he was a disgrace. This was prompted by Zak's calling his father "dad", instead of the customary "sir" (Battlestar Galactica 2).

Zak the Returner[edit]

A clone of him believed to be a "Returner" is found by Kara Thrace aboard Medivac 12 (Battlestar Galactica 0). Despite knowing that the human Zak was dead and buried, Thrace helps him ward off an attack by new-model Centurions on Medivac 12 (Battlestar Galactica 1).

After piloting Medivac 12 away from debris, he escapes to Galactica in a zip pod piloted by a member of the Earth Protectorate, who is paid for his services by ardent believers of the Sacred Scrolls. Zak is later captured, having inadvertently infected the worshipers with a virus, and is summarily interrogated by Lee Adama.

In the course of the interrogation, Lee slips the fact that he has feelings for Kara Thrace, which results in a fracas that allows the virus to infect Lee. However, during the fight, Zak saves Lee from an Earth Protectorate assassin and later accompanies Lee in taking out a group of Protectorate terrorists.

Lee succumbs to the virus' effects, which enrages Commander Adama, who assaults Zak. However, Lee mentions that Zak saved his life and the elder Adama begrudgingly accepts the fact that Zak could have killed either one of them several times over.

When Lieutenant Felix Gaeta informs Zak and Commander Adama of the approach of an antebellum basestar, the elder Adama is forced to rely on Zak's flying skills in order to attack the basestar (Battlestar Galactica 2). It is before this attack when Thrace gives Zak a callsign, Buster, as a result of busting three of the test maneuvers that should have resulted in his obtaining a failing grade. It is after this that Commander Adama informs Zak that he should have never passed basic flight, and that he was passed due to Thrace's feelings for him.

During the attack, Zak tries to inform Commander Adama about the demolition gel on the basestar, but the commander deploys the nuclear warhead. The resultant explosion causes damage to Thrace's Viper.

Realizing that he's somehow a Cylon construct, he doesn't surrender himself to this, but instead exchanges his life to save Thrace by swapping Vipers. Now in Zak's Viper, Thrace is able to leave the area as her damaged Viper explodes, killing Zak (Battlestar Galactica 3).

Lieutenant Zac is an inexperienced Colonial Warrior and Viper pilot assigned to Galactica, which is commanded by his father, Commander Adama. He is the youngest of Adama's and Ila's children; his older siblings, Apollo and Athena, are also assigned to Galactica.

Despite the lack of experience, Zac has received high marks at the academy, which outstripped even his father's (deleted scene, "Saga of a Star World").

Zac works with Starbuck to convince his brother, Apollo, that Starbuck was too ill to go on patrol, suggesting that Zac take patrol instead. Apollo sees through the ruse and allows Zac to come anyway.

On patrol with his brother as Blue Flight Two, Apollo discovers several Cylon tankers within a cloud body near the lunar body of Cimtar, which soon leads to a fight with Cylon Raiders.

Zac's Viper is damaged and unable to keep up with his brother. Zac encourages Apollo to go ahead to warn the battlestar fleet of the massive Cylon fighter squadron.

Zac's fighter falls behind as he is chased by the Cylons. While in sight of the battlestar fleet but with no Vipers scrambled to assist, despite Commander Adama's pleas for fleet defensive measures to President Adar, Zac's Viper is destroyed. This makes him the first known casualty of the decisive, genocidal attack on the Twelve Colonies (TOS: "Saga of a Star World").

Adar: (noting the bright explosion of Zac's fighter) What was that?
Adama: That was my son, Mr. President.

Notes[edit]

  • Zac's rank of lieutenant, despite a lack of any real flight experience, may be explained by his high marks at the academy, which are revealed in a deleted scene.
  • After his brief appearance in the Battlestar Galactica pilot, actor Rick Springfield enjoyed stardom in the 1980s in the soap opera General Hospital as well as a recording career. His most popular songs are "Jessie's Girl" and "Don't Talk to Strangers."
