Summary

With the occupation of New Caprica taking a deadly turn, the stage is set for Twilight Command's mission: Infiltrate the Cylon factory and level it to the ground. There's only one question: Are they up to the challenge?[1]

Plot

Prior to New Caprica

The events depicted in this section take place 22 days before the discovery of New Caprica.
  • A triad game is in progress in Galactica's hangar bay, consisting of a few deckhands and Kara Thrace.
  • Deckhand Daid has enough of the game and leaves in a huff, guilty that she isn't getting her maintenance work done.
  • As Daid gets to work, she hears a sound and finds herself quickly muffled by a member of a quartet of soldiers.
  • The leader instructs two of the Twilights to get a Raptor prepped for launch, while the leader and Twilight Two proceed to open the hangar door.
  • The card game is happening in front of the hangar door controls, and they notice Thrace is gone. However, they decide to gas the remaining players, so they either leave the bay or are incapacitated.
  • As Twilight Three returns against Twilight One's orders, they are stopped by a group of Marines who are flanking William Adama and Kara Thrace. Thrace reveals that they've been onto the Twilight's activities for a while, while Adama reveals that he is aware of who Twilight One is: Alexa Flores.
  • The Twilight quartet is thrown in the brig.

Cylon-Occupied New Caprica

The events depicted in this section take place 104 days into the Cylon occupation of New Caprica.
  • Aboard Colonial One, John Cavil discusses the events of the night prior with Sharon Valerii, Number Six, and Aaron Doral. Cavil advocates their extermination, but the other Cylons disagree; Doral believes that they need to be more efficiently policing the humans, while Six and Sharon advocate for survival alongside the humans, and not domination.
  • Cavil vehemently disagrees, and leaves the meeting to attend to the policing of the humans using the "factory that pumps out the best police force we have."
  • At Twilight Command's camp, Spark repairs Deacon from the events of the night prior. Deacon compliments Spark on "being a good maker," and asks if Spark has children of his own. He is discomforted by the conversation and tells Deacon that he's done with the repairs; Deacon apologizes for making Spark uncomfortable.
  • Around the nearby campfire, Devos and Tomlin have an argument about staying out of "colonist drama." Devos needles Tomlin over his playing solider, and Devos maintains that if they are to survive "our only real loyalty is to ourselves." Unbeknownst to them, Flores overhears this conversation from behind a tree.

Prior to New Caprica

The events depicted in this section take place 20 days before the discovery of New Caprica, and thus 2 days after her incarceration.
  • Admiral William Adama visits Alexa Flores in Galactica's brig. He mentions reviewing her decorated service record and that he would not have expected her to desert. Flores makes it clear that she believes that the Colonial Fleet no longer exists and the war is over, as "you can't be a deserter if there's nothing to desert."
  • Adama digs deeper during his conversation, revealing that Flores considers herself a failure for having her unit wiped out by the Cylons during the Cylon attack.
  • Flores asks why Adama cares if she quits, to which Adama expresses his belief that she is better than she knows and still has a purpose to serve.

Cylon-Occupied New Caprica

The events depicted in this section take place 104 days into the Cylon occupation of New Caprica.
  • Flores makes herself known to the rest of the group, and makes her case that the Cylons still continue to take more and more from the survivors. She tells them that she was ready to ignore Galen Tyrol's plea for help, but was swayed otherwise since he "was just afraid of having the things he loves" taken away from him.
  • Flores ends with an impassioned declaration to destroy the Cylon "toaster" factory in order to "take something back" for themselves.

Notes

Analysis

  • John Cavil's motivations in this issue are in line with wanting to destroy the humans to spite the Final Five. Despite the overall power he has over the Significant Seven, he maintains a level of composure so that he does not tip his hand.
  • Further development on Alexa Flores and the members of her reconstituted Twilight Command occur in this issue:
    • Flores feels that she failed to keep her original Command alive during the Fall of the Twelve Colonies, save Tomlin.
    • Tomlin follows Flores because he trusts her.
    • Devos follows Flores because he believes that there isn't a greater good, and that each person is only loyal to themselves.
    • Spark follows Flores because his heart grew cold, due to the death of his child (or children) at the hands of the Cylons.
    • Deacon's motivations may be a result of more than just Spark's re-programming.

Questions

Noteworthy Dialogue

Adama: I want you to remember that we are leaders, and as difficult as it is to carry the guilt of feeling like you have blood on your hands, it is your duty to do so. It is your duty to carry on. You're not responsible for those deaths. That's the work of the frakking Cylons. Them and them alone.
Flores: It doesn't matter. I know who killed my squad, but that's not the point. My job was to lead, to protect them from all enemies. All of them! But I didn't. The enemy came, and my soldiers died. I. Failed.
Adama: No. You've simply lost your way. You've lost your purpose. And I'm going to help you get it back.
