Prior to the Fall of the Twelve Colonies, Marta Shaw had succumbed to cancer, with her death having been reported throughout the Twelve Colonies. Admiral Helena Cain accused Lieutenant Shaw of exploiting her mother's fame and connections in order to gain a posting aboard Cain's command, the battlestar Pegasus (TRS: "Razor").
