Following the Nebula Ambush, the Fleet happens across another "fork in the road," featuring a well-charted sector of space and a "storm zone" (vol2).
An unknown artifact is discovered by the Fleet within a storm zone.

The storm zone, also referred to as a quantum storm (vol2), consists of high energon stellar storms that blue flight, lead by Lt. Starbuck, investigate. In returning to Galactica, blue flight's Vipers are found to be charged with high-static energon fields, which discharge into void lightning that hits Xam and causes a total power outage aboard the battlestar (vol2.
The artifact takes on two appearances, the first being the shining planet Earth, particularly amongst the most fervent of believers, like Commander Adama. To others, the artifact appears to be a grey, three-level object roughly resembling a cube, with each level skewed and festooned with large black pustule formations (vol2).

Upon hitting Xam, the discharge awakens latent psionic potential, which grows due to the proximity of the energon fields of the storm zone. These psionic abilities project false yet immutable beliefs that Earth lies at the center of the storm zone, heavily influencing many people in the Fleet, including Commander Adama (vol2—).
However, like Earth, the artifact itself is a phantom. Upon probing it, Athena uncovers the data relating to the cube is coming from Galactica itself, localizing it to habitation chamber 13, located at the port side of deck 8: Xam's berth (vol2).

Due to Cylon engagement into the unnamed, coreward quadrant by Capt. Apollo and red flight (vol2), Commander Adama approves going through the storm zone (vol2.
Upon the revelation that Xam is responsible for the mirage (both of "the artifact" and the ersatz Earth), these disappear when Xam uses his newfound psionic powers to project a force of battlestars impeding the Cylon advance. This distraction allows the Fleet to escape from the storm zone, but results in Xam's demise (vol2).

* The "storm zone" can be seen as an analog to the magnetic void to Kobol.

A visual representation of the artifact, as seen by those who do not see a certain shining planet in the storm zone (Classic Battlestar Galactica Vol. 2 #8).

An unknown artifact is discovered by the Fleet within a storm zone.

The artifact takes on two appearances, the first being the shining planet Earth, particularly amongst the most fervent of believers, like Commander Adama. To others, the artifact appears to be a grey, three-level object roughly resembling a cube, with each level skewed and festooned with large black pustule formations (Classic Battlestar Galactica Vol. 2 #8).

However, like Earth, the artifact itself is a phantom. Upon probing it, Athena uncovers the data relating to the cube is coming from Galactica itself, localizing it to habitation chamber 13, located at the port side of deck 8: Xam's berth (Classic Battlestar Galactica Vol. 2 #9).

Upon the revelation that Xam is responsible for the mirage (both of "the artifact" and the ersatz Earth), these disappear when Xam uses his newfound psionic powers to project a force of battlestars impeding the Cylon advance. This distraction allows the Fleet to escape from the storm zone, but results in Xam's demise (Classic Battlestar Galactica Vol. 2 #9).
