Additional Information

The Artemis-class battlestar is a Colonial Fleet battleship in operation during the First Cylon War. It is the mainstay command ship in deployment during the early stages of that conflict, until succeeded by other battlestar classes deployed later in the conflict.

An Artemis-class' primary mission profile as a command ship of a Battlestar group or other strike force is due to its robust firepower, including its flak protection abilities in aptly dealing with inbound enemy munitions and enemy fighter craft (Battlestar Galactica Deadlock).

Artemis is the predecessor for all other battlestars, and is quickly outmoded due to its notorious inability for retrofits whenever new technologies became available.[2] As such, it is no longer in service by the time of the Fall of the Twelve Colonies.

Abilities

As a "pocket battlestar," Artemis is lightly armored and relies on its flak cannons and heavy firepower for defense.[2]

Primary batteries are laden across its bow and dorsal spines, capable of shooting at a near 180-degree arc. Numerous missile tubes and kinetic-energy weapons line the amidship's belly to handle large craft, while smaller strike craft and superiority fighters can be dealt with via the point defense guns built into the flight pods.[2]

Artemis supports two full wings of Viper Mark Is, capable of being deployed via magnetic accelerator tubes from the outer sides of the flight pods.[2]

Raptors are also standard for marine and force reconnaissance operations.[2]

Large landing bays inside the flight pods allow for rapid recovery of craft during emergency jump procedures.[2]

Design

Of note, Artemis is among the first ship designs to feature fixed, un-retractable flight pods that did not hinder the ship's FTL ability.[2]

This class originates the general design aesthetic of battlestars, featuring a wedged "alligator head" forward section where CIC resides, a narrow central body sporting the ship's weapon emplacements, and a broad aft section supporting the six stardrive clusters.[2]

Due to the largely significant hurdle of upgrading and retrofitting with new advancements during its lifetime, Artemis-class battlestars saw shorter-than-expected service and were steadily replaced by newer classes, such as the Minerva- and Jupiter-class.[2]

Role

Primarily an offensive craft, Artemis lead the charge against Cylon aggression to great effect during the war. As war material and resources became scarce, the cost to create this class of ship is lower than its bulk and abilities would suggest, and thus helps to stem the tide of the war in the Colonies' favor.[2]

Its extensive tactical facilities and abilities as both a defensive and offensive platform repetitiously prove its dominance on the battlefield. From protecting smaller vessels during engagements to reinforcing weakened forces, large numbers of Artemis-class battlestars are deployed in the earliest stages of the war.[2]
