Lucifer leads a Cylon task force in the "education" of the Kiernu following their inability to hinder the Fleet's entrance into the Empyrean Expanse (Battlestar Galactica Classic #1).

The Kiernu are a sentient, bi-pedaled spacefairing race of creatures who, are encountered by the Fleet in the seventh-millennium after entering the Empyrean Expanse.

Openly hostile to outsiders, the Kiernu forbade Commander Adama's Fleet to enter a small passage of Kiernu's space to allow the Fleet to make maximal use of its dwindling tylium supply, With no viable alternative for the Fleet, Adama disregards the directive of the Kiernu Chancellor and proceeds anyway. Their crafts are markedly inferior to both the Colonials and the Cylons (Battlestar Galactica Classic #0).

Okaati and the Comitat

The Kiernu's attitude of outsiders is directly proportional to its interaction with the Okaati, a race from outside the Expanse whose fleet of survivors have made the nebula their scavenging ground (Battlestar Galactica Classic #0 & Battlestar Galactica Classic #4). As the latest victim of the Comitat before the Fleet's arrival, their Chancellor is given the mantle of being the Comitat's sole leader (Battlestar Galactica Classic #4).

Death by the Cylons

Having previous contact with the Cylon Empire, the Kiernu are left seemingly unmolested until the Cylons take note of their failure to interdict the Fleet's entry into the Expanse. Lucifer and a Cylons task force invade the Kiernu homeworld to exterminate them, as an example to other races who demonstrate their uselessness to the Cylons' aims. Lieutenant Sheba's Silver Spar Squadron relays this fate to Commander Adama, to his horror as he blames himself for helping give the Cylons justification for their fate (Battlestar Galactica Classic #1).

After assuming the mantle of the Comitat leader, formerly unclaimed by the Kiernu Chancellor, Adama and the Comitat engage in retribution against the Cylons and secure a peace between the Comitat and the Okaati, re-homing the surrendering Okaati on the Kiernu's former homeworld (Battlestar Galactica Classic #4—#5).

Notes

• In Battlestar Galactica Classic #0, the Kiernu's Chancellor is depicted with pink skin, however Battlestar Galactica Classic #1 shows the Kiernu (including its Chancellor) as having a dark olive-green skin.
