The grid barge is a prison vessel within the Colonial fleet.[1]
The grid barge serves as a correctional facility for convicted criminals within the fleet. Ex-convicts from the grid barge often seek refuge aboard less-regulated vessels where their past records are not scrutinized.[1]
Known inmates

When questioned by Captain Ironhand of the Broadside about their origins, Baltar claims that he and his companion "have been in the grid barge" when pressed about being "from trouble."[1] Ironhand accepts this explanation readily, noting that most of his crew are either "ex-cons from the grid barge or fugitives from justice."[1]
Later, when joining Dwybolt's theater troupe, Baltar again employs this cover story, telling the impresario that he and Lucifer have "been a long time between engagements" and reveals "frankly, we've been in the grid barge."[2] Dwybolt responds positively to this admission, noting that he likes "to give employment to the functionally unemployable" and that "actors are kind of outside society, too."[2]
Additionally, Lucifer claims to have been on the grid barge "for some time now. In isolation" when explaining to Lingk, an actual Borellian Noman, why they had not previously encountered each other despite the small Borellian population in the fleet.[3]
