The timeline below chronicles the events depicted in the Original Series.
This timeline excludes the spin-off series Galactica 1980 and does not include any information from separate continuity works such as novels and comics. Nor does it include information from the inaccurate Encyclopedia Galactica reference released in 1979.
The timeline is given in yahrens, the Colonial term for "years." The date around which the timeline revolves is 7322, the only date given in the series, and one from the Colonial calendar. This was the yahren when the Cylons attacked Umbra on Caprica, as mentioned in "The Man with Nine Lives".
Ancient history
- Before 1: The Beings of Light intervene at the beginning of human development on the planet that would come to be known as Kobol. Adama refers to these beings as the "Mother Race" (TOS: "War of the Gods, Part I").
- 1: The beginning of the Colonial calendar.
- ~1348: The beginning of recorded human history on Kobol; 6,000 yahrens before "Saga of a Star World".
- ~1348 to ~5438: The fall of Kobol and the Exodus of the Thirteen Tribes ("Saga of a Star World," "Lost Planet of the Gods, Part I").
- ~5438: The Twelve Colonies begin to re-establish their space travel capabilities. At this time, the Colonials were using sublight craft reminiscent of the early space vehicles launched from Earth in the 1960s and 70s (TOS: "The Hand of God"). According to Adama, "It took them hundreds of yahrens to revive even the most primitive crafts" (Lost Planet of the Gods, Part II, telemovie only).
- ~6347: The Cylons, a humanoid race, are taken over by their robot slaves. A machine ruler, known as the Imperious Leader, comes to rule the Cylon Empire (TOS: "War of the Gods, Part II").
History of the Colonial and Cylon Conflict
- ~6348: The Cylons attack the Hasari, whose territory neighbors the Colonies. The Colonials intervene in the conflict between the Cylons and the Hasari, and the Thousand-Yahren War begins between the Colonies and the Cylon Empire (TOS: "Saga of a Star World").
- ~6648: Proteus in operation as a penal colony of the Twelve Colonies (TOS: "The Long Patrol").
- ~6848: Battlestar Galactica is launched. Back then, the celestial chambers on Galactica were used to confirm navigational headings (500 yahrens before "The Hand of God").
- Before 7248: Adama is born (TOS: "Lost Planet of the Gods, Part I").
- ~7315: Apollo is born on Caprica to Adama and Ila. Starbuck is born on Caprica, the son of Chameleon.[1]
- 7322: The epoch of this timeline. After one of the first Cylon attacks on Caprica, the people of the farm village of Umbra are scattered. Chameleon is separated from Starbuck, who is later found alone at the edge of the Thorn forest and is presumed orphaned at 7 years (The Man with Nine Lives).
- ~7341: Boxey is born to Serina in the Colonies.[2]
- 7346: The Fifth Fleet engages the Cylons at the Battle of Molecay. Battlestar Pegasus is the only Colonial vessel to survive. Commander Cain, realizing there will be Cylons lying in wait along the entire route back to the Colonies, orders Pegasus out into deep space 2 yahrens before "The Living Legend, Part I".
- ~7347: Pegasus heads out into deep space, eventually winding up in the Delphian Empire, which is in the process of falling to the Cylons (TOS: "The Living Legend, Part I").
The Seventh Millennium of Time
- 7348: Destruction of the Colonies, just before the 7th millennium of recorded time, and the end of the Thousand Yahren War (TOS: "Saga of a Star World").
7349 and later
- Main article: Timeline (1980)
The period between the Original Series and Galactica 1980, and the episodes and events of the Galactica 1980 happened in this period. Of course, as Battlestar Wiki treats 1980 as a divergent continuity, and thus a separate timeline page is available.

- According to Encyclopedia Galactica (a non-canonical piece of merchandise published in 1979):
- ~1000: Oral traditions of the Thirteen Tribes are written down to form the Book of the Word. [3]
- 1000-2100: The Age of the Philosophers occurs, during which the Books of the Lords of Kobol are composed. [3]
- ~2200: The Industrial Age begins on Kobol. [3]
- 2705: The Exodus from Kobol occurs. [3]
- 2710: The Colonies are founded, marking the beginning of the Era of Darkness. [3]
- 4479: The Academy is founded at Caprica, space travel is reinvented, and the Scientific renaissance begins. [4]
- 4483: The Academy graduates its first class of nine Warriors in Yahren 4483. Their training emphasized the strategy of intercontinental warfare, and hand-to-hand martial arts that were obsolete even then. [5]
- 4808: Contact between the Twelve Colonies is re-established. [3]
- 4868: The Academy opens to students not of ruling buritician class and to women. [5]
- 4920: Students from other Colonies are admitted to the Academy. The changes greatly improved the average quality of the student body, so that by Yahren 5000, the Academy graduated 10,000 in each class and had become the leading university of the Colonies. [5]
- 4980: Ultra-light-drive is invented and the Long Peace begins. [3]
- 4998: The Quorum of the Twelve is established. [3]
- 5160: A Cybernetic revolt occurs and the Colonial Code is passed limiting artificial intelligences. [3]
- 5220: Proteus prison established by Aerians. [6]
- 5225: First contact with the Hasaris occurs. [3]
- 5300: Proteus prison population reaches 100,000 persons. [6]
- 5547: The Great Cylon War begins. [3]
- Sometime "early in the Cylon War," Proteus prison is decommissioned and a majority of its prisoners and enforcers are evacuated, barring a few hundred in number that remained across both the prisoner and enforcer populations. [6]
- 5597: Adar takes First Honors from the Institute of Diplomacy. Hoping to realign the human forces into a more effective political union, he became a staff assistant to the Quorum of the Twelve in 5597, but soon became frustrated by the internal bickering that characterized the Council at that time. [7]
- 5770: the 300-member Praesidium was reinstated on Caprica after the abandonment of the wartime three-leader ruling councils system. During the Great Cylon War, the power of the buriticians had been effectively enhanced through crisis governance composed of a commoner, a military leader and a buritician. However, because of the length of the war, this system was deemed no longer sustainable and the full representative Praesidium was restored to power.[8]
- 6250: The first Battlestar is commissioned. [3]
- 6392: Carillon is discovered. [3]
- 6440: Adama is born. [9]
- 6450: A mining colony is established on Carillon, with human population reaching 50,000 at its peak in 6465. As the Great War intensified, lines of supply were impossible to maintain over the vast reaches of space between Carillon and the Colonies, and the mining operation was abandoned. [10]
- 6453: Baltar is born on the asteroid Cygnus, a provincial outpost of the Picon Colony, where his family operated a small Tylium mine. [11]
- 6465: Carillon mining colony reaches peak population of 50,000. [10]
- 6470: Cylons capture Cygnus and Baltar lives as a prisoner for five yahren until 6475. [11]
- 6475: Baltar is liberated from Cygnus. [11]
- 6495: Cain graduates number one in the Academy class. [12]
- 6498: Colonel Tigh begins his military career as a simple soldier, commissioned a Warrior on the field of battle for outstanding heroism during the Tauron campaign in 6525. [13]
- 6519: Cassiopea is born. [14]
- 6523: Starbuck is born. [15]
- 6525: Apollo is born. [16]
- Tigh is commissioned a Warrior on the field of battle for outstanding heroism during the Tauron campaign. [13]
- 6527: Boomer is born. [17]
- 6532: Athena is born. [18]
- 6535: Zaccariah (sic) is born. [19]
- 6560: Galactica is commissioned. [20][21]
- 6562: Boomer and Starbuck graduate from the Academy; Boomer graduates with honors in electromagnetic science. [17]
- 6570: The Final Destruction of the Colonies by Cylon forces occurs.[3] Apollo, Boomer, and Starbuck are awarded the Golden Cluster for his heroism in the Final Destruction.[16][15][17] Adar and Zac die during the Final Destruction.[7][19] Cain's fate during the Great Destruction is unknown. [12]
- 6572: A successful raid on Cylon Gomoray (sic) base occurs, along with the possible destruction of battlestar Pegasus. Cain's fate remains in question. [3][12]
