The helm is the Colonial term for the helmet worn by Viper pilots.
It serves several functions, when worn it erects an energy shield that covers the opening in the face, in addition to the breach around the neck. On the inside of the shield, it offers a visual readout called an info-scroll, in addition to an internal communicator that allows communication to other ships and the Fleet.
It also serves as a filter and oxygen supply, capable of extracting oxygen from unbreathable atmospheres[1] (RH: Armageddon)
Notes
- This is implied to be the same as the helmet worn in the Original Series, however none of these functions are ever specified as being part of the helmet in the series, nor is this term used.
