Overview
- According to an interview with executive producer David Eick, this episode is not quite a standalone, not quite an arc episode: it sets up/leads into the mid-season finale in episode 10.
- This is similar to how "Colonial Day" led up to "Kobol's Last Gleaming, Part I" in Season 1, "Downloaded" led up to "Lay Down Your Burdens, Part I", and (to an extent) "Flight of the Phoenix" introduced elements for "Pegasus".
- According to Bradley Thompson in an interview with the Chicago Tribune website, episode 9 "The Passage" is written by newcomer Jane Espenson. According to the interview:
- "Espenson’s episode arose when the show brought in Dr. Kevin Grazier, a scientist from the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, who talked about how one would navigate through space; how one would figure out how to get from one point in the universe to, for example, Earth. Grazier's talk prompted the story at the heart of Espenson's episode."
