Overview

Tensions run high when the Pegasus, a battlestar more advanced than the Galactica, is found -- only to have Admiral Nelena Cain usurp command of the fleet and foist her demands on those under her new command.

Summary

• The Pegasus, a Mercury-class battlestar, has joined the fleet. She survived the attack by blind-jumping as the Cylons attacked the Scorpion Ship Yards.
• A Cylon fleet, comprised of two basestars, support ships and a large mothership of unknown purpose have been trailing the fleet -- and detected by Cain and the Pegasus.
• Upon assuming command of the fleet, Cain begins moving crew members around, transferring Lee Adama and Kara Thrace to the Pegasus.
• Helo and Galen Tyrol are arrested for court martial, after a Pegasus lieutenant, Thorne, is murdered.

Notes

• Nelena Cain is the female version of Cain, who was portrayed by the late Lloyd Bridges in the original Battlestar Galactica.
• This episode is inspired by the two part episode, "The Living Legend".
• "Pegasus" apparently starts a multi-episode arc and is slated to air mid-way in the second season.
• "Gina" is a variant of Number 6 who has lost her faith. She posed as a civilian dock worker who was rescued by the Pegasus and was responsible for tipping off the Cylons -- killing 800 of the Pegasus crew in the process.
• Ronald D. Moore also wrote another episode called The Pegasus, in the seventh season of ST:TNG

Noteworthy Dialogue

There was a proposed episode called Return of The Pegasus for a possible second season of the orignal Battlestar Galatica. [1] In which:

"Boomer detects wave after wave of Cylon ships heading for the fleet, badly outnumbered in a battle that sees Sheba’s Viper hit and careen through space in flames, the day is saved by Vipers from the returning battlestar Pegasus.

In the battle, the Galactica’s bridge takes a hit and Athena is engulfed in flames, flames put out with Adama’s bare hands. Cassiopea informs Adama that Athena will need intensive plastic surgery to restore her damaged body.

The two battlestars’ crews reunite, but Apollo, who has given up his command after the loss of Sheba, notes that Cain’s manner is somewhat changed from their previous encounter.

Renata, Cain’s executive officer, and one of the loveliest women he and Starbuck have ever seen soon dispels Apollo’s doubts as he begins to fall in love with her.

An inquisitive Starbuck, who is losing the competition that has sprung up between himself and Apollo for Renata’s affection; begins to find more faults with Cain and his ship. Wandering into the bowels of the ship, Starbuck discovers the secret of the Pegasus, her crew are being replaced by a new species of Cylon androids, and an android replica has replaced Cain himself, what is more, Renata is the head Cylon who will destroy the fleet in an attack from within.

Warning Apollo just in time, Starbuck and he tackle the murderous android, casting her into space as a battle breaks out between the Galactica and the Pegasus which is now commanded by a machine with the subverted intelligence of a living legend!"
