The Viper pilot helmet is a unique piece of head-wear for Colonial Warriors who pilot Viper craft.

The features of said helmet are never specified in the series, however it is known to have communications and illumination abilities. While Warriors use the helmet when flying Vipers, it is not necessary as the Viper cockpit itself has life support, and Starbuck does not require it when flying Starchaser (TOS: "The Long Patrol").

Ornamentation

The helmet itself is adorned with a forehead ornament, and two are known: for Galactica, a symbolic version of an unspecified avion adorns the forehead of the pilot's helmet (TOS: "Saga of a Star World"), while Pegasus features a winged horse known to symbolize the creature for which the battlestar appears to be named (TOS: "The Living Legend, Part I").

The garish Commander Cain is seen with an ornate rectangular ornament on his chin, likely denoting his rank and stature as commander of the Fifth Fleet (TOS: "The Living Legend, Part I", "The Living Legend, Part II").

Notes

According to Jean-Pierre Dorleac, the helmets were stylized after Egyptian pharaoh's head coverings.[1]
