Curtis Credel (born Curtis Ray Credle on October 21, 1944, in Washington, North Carolina)[external 1] is an American character actor who portrayed Colonial gunner Haals in the Original Series two-part episode "The Gun on Ice Planet Zero, Part I" and "The Gun on Ice Planet Zero, Part II". His career as a working character actor spanned the 1970s and 1980s, with extensive appearances in Glen A. Larson productions and network television series.
Career
Credel established himself as a reliable character actor during the golden age of network television, appearing in approximately 37-39 credited roles across television and film from the mid-1970s through the mid-1980s.[external 2] His television work included notable guest appearances on Wonder Woman (1976, 1979), Columbo (1975), The Six Million Dollar Man (1976, 1977), Black Sheep Squadron (1976, 1977), Emergency! (1978), CHiPs (1979), The Dukes of Hazzard (1979), The Waltons (1981), Magnum, P.I. (1981), Dynasty (1981, 1984), and Murder, She Wrote (1985).[external 2]
His film credits included an uncredited role in Smokey and the Bandit (1977), a supporting part in Hard Country (1981) with Kim Basinger and Jan-Michael Vincent, and the role of FBI agent Bates in Stephen King's Firestarter (1984) with Drew Barrymore.[external 2]
Glen A. Larson Productions
Credel became part of Glen A. Larson's rotating stable of character actors, appearing in multiple productions from the prolific television creator. His Larson series appearances included McCloud (1977), B.J. and the Bear (1981), The Fall Guy (1983), and Battlestar Galactica (1978).[external 2] This pattern of repeat casting was common practice for Larson, who frequently utilized trusted performers across his action-adventure series.
Battlestar Galactica
In "The Gun on Ice Planet Zero," Credel played Haals, a Colonial Warrior serving as senior gunnery master aboard the Galactica. The two-part episode originally aired October 22 and 29, 1978, and followed a commando team's mission to destroy the Cylon-controlled Ravashol Pulsar weapon on the frozen planet Arcta.[external 2]
Haals was part of the military contingent accompanying a team of recruited convicts led by Apollo, Starbuck, and Boomer. In a pivotal scene, the villainous convict Wolfe, frustrated from exposure to the cold while riding atop the team's snowram, seized a laser pistol and attacked Haals, pushing him off the transport. Apollo confirmed Haals survived the assault.
Personal Life
Credel has been married four times. His marriages included Judy Lawrence (1965-1968), actress Marsha Mercant (1977-1982),[external 3][external 4] Della Lietzke (1986-1987), and Donna Coleman Credle (1989-present).[external 5]
After his acting career concluded in the mid-1980s, Credel relocated to Brunswick, Georgia, where he owned and operated Star Cars, an independent refurbished used car dealership, and co-owned Credle's Cruise & Travel, a travel agency.[external 6] He remained in Brunswick until 2011, when he moved to the Orlando, Florida area.[external 7]
