Career
editTelevision acting (1978–1983)
editBloom's earliest screen credit was as Ronnie in "Dear Ms. Dinah," an episode of Eight Is Enough broadcast January 25, 1978.[external 3] Later that year he appeared in nine episodes of The Waverly Wonders as John Tate.[external 4], in addition to his Original Series' appearance as Kyle in "The Young Lords."
In 1979 Bloom appeared as Joey Campbell in "No Way to Treat a Flower," a Quincy, M.E. episode written by then-future Galactica 1980 producer Jeff Freilich.[external 5]
Bloom's television work continued into 1980, when he played Perley Day Wilder in "Wilder and Wilder," an episode of Little House on the Prairie,[external 6] Lyle Bixler in an episode of Number 96,[external 7] and Scotty in an episode of Lou Grant.[external 8] He also appeared as Junior Beauregard on The Misadventures of Sheriff Lobo.[external 9]
Bloom played Daniel Pierson, a newly hired general manager at fictional television station KTNS, in "Metamorphosis – The TV Show," a fourth-season episode of Mork & Mindy that aired January 21, 1982.[external 10] That year he also played Creekmore, credited as Charlie Bloom, in the television movie Pigs vs. Freaks,[external 11] and David McCall in Drop-Out Father.[external 12] His final screen credits came in 1983, playing Travis Ault in The Kid with the 200 I.Q.[external 13] and Regis Carey in an episode of Foot in the Door.[external 14]
Musical theatre
editFollowing his acting career, Bloom studied music theory and composition at New York University.[external 15] He returned to the stage as a performer in a 1985 Los Angeles revival of Follies.[external 16]
Bloom went on to work as a composer, lyricist, and bookwriter for musical theatre. He wrote the book, music, and lyrics to Pablo, based on the early life of Pablo Picasso.[external 17] A concept album of Pablo was introduced to the industry with a listening party at the Laurie Beechman Theatre in Manhattan on May 16, 2022.[external 18]
Bloom also wrote Insomnia, with a book by Theo Wolf, staged at the Midtown International Theatre Festival's Main Stage in New York from August 2–7, 2016.[external 19] Heaven Knows, another of his stage works, received invitation-only debut readings at Opera America's Scorca Hall in New York on June 8 and 9, 2023.[external 20] He also wrote the score to This Will All Be Yours, with a book by Laura Pedersen.[external 21]
In 2012, Bloom released Music and Lyrics by Charles Bloom: In Here, a CD produced and orchestrated by David Snyder and recorded with a live 20-piece orchestra, featuring performers including Christine Ebersole, Howard McGillin, and Aaron Lazar.[external 22] Bloom has named Noël Coward as an influence on his songwriting.[commentary 1]
