Steve Thackray is a Canadian actor and musician based in Vancouver, British Columbia,[production 1] who portrayed STO Martyr #2 in Caprica's "Apotheosis". The episode was broadcast by Syfy on January 4, 2011 as part of a marathon airing of the series' previously unaired final five episodes following its cancellation.[external 1] Thackray's own promotional materials describe the part as a terrorist bomber for the Soldiers of the One.[1]

Career

Before establishing himself on camera, Thackray worked as a casting agent for Silverscreen, Inc. in Calgary, Alberta, in the early 2000s.[external 2] His earliest credited on-screen role was a recurring part as "The Captain" on The Ennead, a Canadian science-fiction web series created by Terry Miles, in which he appeared in seventeen of the 2009 episodes.[external 3] That same year, he also appeared as a doctor in a Dell Computers commercial and in an advertisement for Shaw Tuftex Carpets of California.[production 2][production 3]

Following his appearance in Caprica, Thackray played a minor role credited as "Drunk" in the Supernatural episode "The Girl Next Door", which aired on October 7, 2011.[external 4] He has also described the part as "a drunk guy on the WB TV series 'Supernatural'" in his own professional biography.[production 4]

In 2012, Thackray took a larger role as Sheriff Mike Hoffler in the found-footage horror feature Embedded, co-starring Don Knodel and Jeb Beach and directed by Micheal Bafaro.[external 5] The film was produced under the working title Hatt's Creek, the name of the fictional Montana town in which it is set.[external 6] A retrospective genre review noted that involving the local sheriff's office, the role played by Thackray, in the search party helped the film avoid a common found-footage cliché in which characters cannot summon help due to poor cell reception.[external 7] Ahead of a public screening and cast Q&A at Revelstoke's Roxy Theatre in February 2013, a local newspaper reported that the film had won the Best Narrative Feature award at the 2012 Lighthouse International Film Festival in Long Beach, New Jersey, and had been nominated for Best Ensemble Cast at the 2012 Orlando Film Festival.[production 5] Producer and co-star Don Knodel said at the time that the film had not yet been picked up for distribution.[production 6] Thackray's own promotional materials likewise credit the role with festival recognition, though they describe the ensemble nomination as coming from a "Florida Int'l Film Festival" rather than the Orlando Film Festival named in the contemporary press account.[production 7][footnotes 1]

The following year, Thackray appeared as Prosecutor of Carl in Gold, a German-Canadian co-production about the Klondike Gold Rush of 1898 directed by Thomas Arslan and filmed partly in the British Columbia interior.[external 8] According to his own biography, the production screened at the Berlin International Film Festival.[production 8] He also played Dan in the low-budget comedy The Guerilla Picture Show that same year.[external 9]

In 2014, Thackray played Detective Frank Ward in the horror comedy Bloody Knuckles, which premiered at the Fantasia International Film Festival.[external 10] One genre review singled out his performance, along with that of a co-star, as among the film's weaker elements.[external 11] The following year, Thackray played a uniformed police officer in Driver from Hell, a road-horror feature directed by Micheal Bafaro that was also released under the title Wrecker.[external 12][footnotes 2]

Thackray's more recent screen credits include the role of Ben in the 2017 short film Daughter for Daughter,[external 13] a Belgian dockworker in the 2021 Canadian comedy-drama Box of Freedom,[external 14] and Carson in the 2024 drama Through the Door.[external 15] In the 2024 cyber-thriller Mind Wave, he was cast as Inspector Roberts, the investigating officer who questions a wrongfully accused cybersecurity expert.[external 16] A review of the film in Film Threat praised the performance, writing that "Thackray is also excellent as well, being a clever cop who wants justice."[external 17]

Music

Alongside his acting work, Thackray has contributed to film soundtracks. He served as assistant music supervisor on the 2010 drama Amazon Falls,[external 18] and he wrote and performed the original song "Live It Up" for the soundtrack of the 2014 horror film Extraterrestrial.[external 19][external 20] Thackray's own biography also describes him as having taken an on-screen role in Extraterrestrial, playing the husband of a character portrayed by Emily Perkins,[production 9] but the film's officially credited cast list does not include him in an acting capacity.[footnotes 3]

Personal life

Thackray became engaged to singer Karen Fowlie in 2005, two years after the two met when Fowlie visited the Calgary casting agency where Thackray worked.[external 2][external 21] The couple selected August 15, 2006 for their wedding date.[external 22] At the time of the engagement announcement, Thackray was described as an actor and screenwriter.[external 23]

By February 2007, a Vancouver newspaper identified Thackray as "a Vancouver actor and Olympic supporter" while reporting on public reaction to the city's 2010 Olympic countdown clock,[external 24] indicating he had relocated from Calgary to Vancouver, British Columbia, by that time. The same article referred to his wife as "Karen Fowlie-Thackray," indicating the couple had married following their planned 2006 wedding.[external 25]

Notes

  1. Thackray's own biography names the ensemble-cast nomination as coming from a "Florida Int'l Film Festival," while the Revelstoke Review names it as the 2012 Orlando Film Festival. Orlando is in Florida, so the two accounts may describe the same event under different informal names, but no festival under the exact name "Florida International Film Festival" could be independently confirmed.
  2. The production is catalogued under a single IMDb entry but has circulated under several regional titles, including Wrecker.
  3. Extraterrestrial's officially credited cast, as listed by IMDb, includes Emily Perkins as Nancy but does not list Thackray among the credited actors; his only credit on the production is for the song "Live It Up."
