Outside of ''Battlestar'', he is for his role as Lt. Templeton "Face" Peck on "The A-Team".


At [[Wikipedia:Whitman College|Whitman College]], in [[Wikipedia:Walla Walla, Washington|Walla Walla, Washington]], Dirk became interested in acting. During his freshman year, he accepted a dare to audition for the Spring musical and won the lead role of Gaylord Ravenal in ''[[Wikipedia:Show Boat|Show Boat]]''. He also joined the [[Wikipedia:Phi Delta Theta|Phi Delta Theta]] [[Wikipedia:fraternity|fraternity]] that year, which he credits with supporting his endeavors, and encouraging his development. The next three years were filled with many more musical productions. Upon graduation, Benedict began a two-year training program under [[Wikipedia:John Fernald|John Fernald]], who had headed [[Wikipedia:London|London]]'s [[Wikipedia:Royal Academy of Dramatic Art|Royal Academy of Dramatic Art]] for fifteen years.

At that time he started to use the stage name 'Benedict'; supposedly, whilst searching for a catchier, more [[Wikipedia:United States|American]] name, he agreed to the suggestion of "Benedict" by his agent, who was inspired by Dirk eating [[Wikipedia:Eggs Benedict|Eggs Benedict]] for breakfast during their early morning conversation.

Benedict then played repertory theatre in [[Wikipedia:Seattle, Washington|Seattle]] and in [[Wikipedia:Ann Arbor, Michigan|Ann Arbor]], Michigan, where he played such roles as Edmund in ''[[Wikipedia:King Lear|King Lear]]'', Tarleton in ''[[Wikipedia:Misalliance|Misalliance]]'', Ensign Pulver in ''[[Wikipedia:Mister Roberts|Mister Roberts]]'', and the lead in [[Wikipedia:Neil Simon|Neil Simon]]'s ''[[Wikipedia:Star-Spangled Girl|Star-Spangled Girl]]''. An agent sent him to an audition which resulted in a co-starring role with [[Wikipedia:Diana Rigg|Diana Rigg]] and [[Wikipedia:Keith Mitchell|Keith Mitchell]] in ''[[Wikipedia:Pierre Abélard|Abelard]] [[Wikipedia:Heloise|and Heloise]],'' first on Broadway, then in Los Angeles. On his return to New York, Benedict replaced [[Wikipedia:Keir Dullea|Keir Dullea]] in ''[[Wikipedia:Butterflies Are Free|Butterflies Are Free]]'' on Broadway where he worked with [[Wikipedia:Gloria Swanson|Gloria Swanson]] as his mother. When the New York run ended, he received an offer to repeat his performance in Hawaii, opposite [[Wikipedia:Barbara Rush|Barbara Rush]]. While there, he appeared as a guest lead on ''[[Wikipedia:Hawaii Five-O|Hawaii Five-O]]''. The producers of a psycho-thriller called ''[[Wikipedia:Sssssss|Sssssss]]'' saw Benedict's performance in ''Hawaii-Five-O'' and promptly cast him as the lead in that movie. He next played the psychotic wife-beating husband of [[Wikipedia:Twiggy|Twiggy]] in her American film debut, ''[[Wikipedia:W|W]]''. Benedict starred in the television series, ''[[Wikipedia:Chopper One|Chopper One]]'', but his career break came when he appeared as Lieutenant Starbuck in the movie and television series ''Battlestar Galactica''.

In [[Wikipedia:1986|1986]], he married [[Wikipedia:Toni Hudson|Toni Hudson]], an actress, with whom he has two sons, George and Roland. They divorced in [[Wikipedia:1995|1995]]. In [[Wikipedia:1998|1998]], Benedict learned that he also has another son, John (born [[Wikipedia:1968|1968]]), from a youthful relationship.
