Athena is one of the Lords of Kobol worshipped by modern-day Colonials.
Athena died long ago, throwing herself from the Gates of Hera in despair over the exodus of the thirteen tribes (Home, Part II). Her tomb lies on Kobol some distance from the City of the Gods (Kobol's Last Gleaming, Part I).
When Sharon Agathon is given a callsign by her fellow pilots to differentiate her from her predecessor, Sharon "Boomer" Valerii, the name settled on is Athena in honor of the Lord of Kobol (Torn).
