The battlestar Galactica is the last surviving warship of her kind following the destruction of the Twelve Colonies by the Cylon Empire. Under the command of Adama, Galactica serves as the protector and flagship for a rag-tag fugitive fleet of survivors on a desperate quest to find the legendary thirteenth colony, Earth.[1]

Technical Specifications

edit source

A vessel of immense size and power, Galactica is one of the greatest military and technological achievements of the human race.

The Bridge serves as the central command and control complex for both the battlestar and the entire Fleet. Originally designed with the assumption that battles would be fought at a distance, its position atop the forward superstructure is a major vulnerability in her new role as a close protector of civilian ships. Upgrades to the ship's systems include a new Fleet Traffic Control center and dedicated control centers for landing bay operations to spread out vital functions ((ComicsColonial Technical Journal, Volume 1)).[2]

Landing Bays are the primary source of Galactica's military might. The ship has two large landing bays, Alpha and Beta, running parallel to the main fuselage. Each bay contains sixteen launch tubes, allowing for the simultaneous launch of thirty-two Vipers. While a fully equipped battlestar carries 128 Vipers, Galactica is only able to recover 67 following the Cylon sneak attack. Her Viper complement is later brought back to full strength with the integration of Silver Spar Squadron from the battlestar Pegasus. The bays are defended by a network of computer-controlled laser turrets, some of which have been upgraded to allow for human fire control ((ComicsColonial Technical Journal, Volume 1)).[3]

Operational History

edit source

As the last remnant of Colonial military power, Galactica is constantly engaged in defending the Fleet from Cylon attacks and other stellar threats, all while dealing with dwindling resources and internal political strife.

The ship and its crew face a new kind of enemy when they encounter the extra-dimensional Somnians, who attempt to possess the crew and use Galactica as a vessel to invade the human universe. The ship's crew is almost entirely incapacitated before the threat is thwarted by Apollo ((ComicsPrison of Souls, Part 1)(ComicsPrison of Souls, Part 3 #[[Prison of Souls, Part 3 {{{2}}}|{{{2}}}]] — Part 3)).[4]

Under pressure from the Council of the Twelve, Galactica leads the Fleet to the Domia system to establish a permanent colony, a decision Adama vehemently opposes. The colonization attempt ends in disaster, and Galactica is forced to cover the Fleet's escape ((ComicsNo Place Like Home), (ComicsHades Hath No Fury), (ComicsFire in the Sky)).[5] Soon after, the ship is ambushed by a massive Cylon force, which inflicts critical damage and nearly destroys the battlestar ((ComicsFire in the Sky)).[6]
