Solium is a liquid fuel used by Colonial spacecraft, and is kept in large supply aboard Colonial battlestars.
Solium is explosive at high temperatures, thus any fire near solium tanks could easily destroy any spacecraft (TOS: "Fire in Space").
Several ships in the Fleet report solium leaks in the aftermath of the Cylon holocaust. Apollo and a team from Beta section are sent to the freighter Gemini to detect the harmful leaks (TOS: "Saga of a Star World").
Tie-in Material Information
- According to Encyclopedia Galactica (a non-canonical piece of merchandise published in 1979):
- Solium is the liquid fuel that powers deep-space vehicles. [1] The Academy's greatly expanded Department of Engineering and Applied Science produced advances including the liquid solium propulsion systems during the Great Cylon War. [2] Freighters are sub-light vehicles powered by a single solium energizer, with low thrust applied for quatrons in the vacuum of space eventually accelerating them to a cruising speed of .998 of the speed of light. [3]
- The Aerians developed the first Agro Ships to nourish interstellar space crews on long journeys between the stars before the invention of faster-than-light drive. The solium afterburner provided light in the dark reaches between the stars, and genetic engineering produced new plants that could use the solium light spectrum efficiently. This technology allowed space agriculture to flourish in the weightless environment of orbital farming stations. [4]
- In 6572, the Pegasus and Galactica discovered one another and joined in a vital and successful raid on the solium reserves of the Cylon outpost Gamoray. As the Battlestar Galactica and its fleet collected fuel, Cain executed a daring head-on confrontation with three Baseships. [5]
Notes
- Solium is apparently a secondary fuel, perhaps used for smaller ships or equipment other than or in lieu of tylium.
- The non-canonical Encyclopedia Galactica suggests solium has multiple applications beyond just propulsion, including providing artificial light for agricultural purposes in space.
