The short range marker beacon is a homing device used to track friendly Colonial craft.
Such a beacon is fitted in the Starchaser, a recon Viper Starbuck pilots into Alpha Six quadrant. Presumably, the range of the marker beacon is at least a hectar (The Long Patrol).
