Summary
edit- WHO'S SIDE ARE YOU ON? Gaius Baltar has rebuilt a Cylon Centurion, but has he successfully reprogrammed it- or is it simply waiting for the right moment to strike? Will it hunt down hidden Cylons within the fleet- or join them? Meanwhile, on occupied Caprica, Cavil intensifies his cruel game with the captured Simon- or is he putting pieces in place to help his fellow Cylon escape? And in both places, the Cylons are closing in on the humans...[1]
Plot
editThe Fleet
editDr. Baltar is present with his Centurion, Tallos, when Colonel Tigh observes that Tallos recognizes other Cylons, raising immediate concerns about the extent of its original programming remaining intact.[2] Baltar asserts his control over Tallos, claiming to have created and reprogrammed it, and demonstrates this by ordering the Centurion to step back when it attempts to protect a Sharon Cylon and her child.[3][4] He reveals a "kill switch" for Tallos, which he prefers to call a "time out," explaining that it shuts down Tallos's mobility while keeping its mind alert for processing and reflection. Baltar views this as a teaching tool, akin to "digitized pain," to ensure Tallos learns and obeys.[5]
On the Cylon side, Cavil and D'Anna discuss the implications of Baltar's Centurion. They are concerned that Tallos can recognize them, indicating its original programming wasn't fully erased. However, Cavil sees this as a potential advantage, suggesting that Centurions typically follow orders from more advanced Cylon models like themselves, unless Baltar inadvertently corrupted its compliance protocols, leading to a Centurion with free will.[6]
The Colonial Fleet encounters a highly radioactive Colonial Heavy Cruiser, believed to have been drifting since the Cylon attack. It's on a collision course with a planetoid, and there's concern about a dozen warheads on board that could cripple the fleet with an electromagnetic pulse.[7][8] Commander Adama decides to use Tallos to place a detonator on the radioactive cruiser, as Centurions are highly resistant to radiation, unlike more advanced Cylon models. Tallos is deployed with a jet-pack.[9][10]
Inside the cruiser, Tallos discovers "Cyclops," a Cylon left over from the First Cylon War, and evidence that Cylons knew where to shoot to kill it.[10][11][12] Contact with Tallos is lost due to interference. The cruiser's FTL drive spins up, indicating it's preparing to jump, and the kill switch for Tallos is blocked by radiation.[13] However, Tallos comes back online and, "By. Your. Command," times the jump to the same instant as the detonation, dispersing the blast harmlessly throughout hyperspace.[14][15]
Tallos' successful mission proves its usefulness. The plan is to gradually introduce the idea of a Centurion helping the fleet to the public, and D'Anna Biers expresses interest in doing a profile on Tallos.[15] Simultaneously, Cavil continues his manipulative game, helping Simon escape but with a twisted agenda. He tells Simon to hit him to make the escape look convincing and reveals that he will tell Anders that Simon is also a Cylon. Cavil also gives Simon information about Centurions stationed in a pyramid arena, instructing him to head there as part of his "escape."[16]
Despite Tallos's success, there are lingering concerns about its unpredictability due to Baltar's "thorough scrubbing" of its programming, which seemingly removed its compliance protocols.[17][18] Some believe it needs to be terminated as it's "not part of the plan."[19]
Caprica
editMeanwhile, on occupied Caprica, Anders and Barolay interrogate Simon.[20] Anders confronts the Cylon, stating it was "never our friend" and demands information about Cylon positions and strengths. The Cylon denies knowing anything and claims to have had no contact with other Cylons since the Cylon attack.[21] Barolay, however, is harder to convince and implies she will inflict "painful dislocation" on the Cylon, suggesting a form of torture.[22] Anders and Cavil discuss the Cylon's hesitation, leading to suspicion and acknowledging the risk of paranoia destroying the resistance. The possibility of another Cylon hidden among them is raised.[23]
