Given that the series gives numerous references (particularly in one episode, "Greetings from Earth") that the Earth sought after by the Colonials is the same Earth in what is known by its inhabitants as the "Milky Way Galaxy", it is probable that the Colonials have a different name for this galaxy that is common to both Earth and the shattered worlds of the Colonies. This is supported by the Colonial's differing use of units of measure, such as yahren.

Given that the nature of propulsion in the Original Series was never defined, it is more logical (and perhaps less improbable) that the Fleet could traverse a large span of several thousand light-years within the Milky Way galaxy (which is approximately 100,000 light-years in diameter) than to make a journey from one galaxy to another (with distances in hundreds of millions of light-years).

For other uses of "Cyrannus", see this article.

In "The Long Patrol", Starbuck refers to the Twelve Colonies of Man as being in the "Cyrannus Galaxy". This name created confusion to viewers since:

 • The Colonials are seeking Earth.
 • The Original Series does not provide sufficient information to determine if intergalactic travel is in use by the Fleet.

The notion that the "Cyrannus galaxy" and "Milky Way galaxy" are the same galaxy is further supported by the spin-off series, Galactica 1980, where the Fleet finds Earth some 30 years after the Battle of Cimtar.
