Crease Clinic
More actions
The Crease Clinic is a former psychiatric facility located at 2601 Lougheed Highway in Coquitlam, British Columbia, Canada, on the grounds of the former Riverview Hospital. It was used as a filming location, standing in for the Delphi Convalescent Institute as occupied by the Cylons in Re-imagined Series' "The Farm".
History of the building
The building opened in 1934 as a veterans treatment center for survivors of the First World War, including both a main building and a separate Veterans Dining Block. The main building was expanded in 1945 and reopened in 1949 under a new name and mandate as the Crease Clinic of Psychological Medicine, operating as a short-term psychiatric treatment center.[external 1]
In 1965, the Crease Clinic was amalgamated with the adjacent Essondale Hospital and the entire site was renamed Riverview Hospital. The Crease Clinic building closed in 1992 as successive legislative changes reduced the need for inpatient psychiatric care.[external 2] Riverview Hospital as a whole closed in July 2012 and was renamed səmiq̓ʷəʔelə in 2021 following a partnership between BC Housing and the kʷikʷəƛ̓əm Nation.[external 3] The Riverview site was added to the Canadian Register of Historic Places in April 2009.[external 4]
Since its closure the Crease Clinic has been used almost exclusively for film and television production, with IMDb listing over 180 titles filmed at Riverview Hospital.[external 5] Productions filmed at the Crease Clinic include The X-Files, Stargate SG-1, Smallville, Supernatural, Fringe, Deadpool, Watchmen, and Battlestar Galactica.[external 6]
Use in the Re-imagined Series
The Crease Clinic served as the exterior and interior of the Cylon-occupied hospital on Caprica in Re-imagined Series' "The Farm". In the episode, Kara "Starbuck" Thrace wakes in the facility after being wounded and comes to suspect her doctor is a Cylon. The Cylon equipment inside the hospital is destroyed when she escapes.[production 1] The exterior rescue sequence, in which members of the resistance rush Kara "Starbuck" Thrace to a Heavy Raider, was filmed at the Former Pacific Vocational Institute nearby rather than at the Crease Clinic itself.[production 2]
