The Monarch type mining ships are part of the Colonial Auxiliary Fleet, working in tandem with Refinery ships to provide Battlestar Groups at sea with fresh fuel (Blood and Chrome).
These ships are able to directly land on the surface of a moon or asteroid for mining operations, with the mining equipment located in the numerous saucers that compose the hull. After the raw materials are collected, they are transferred to a refinery ship for refining and distribution to the fleet.
Over 40 years later, this type is still utilized by the Colonial Fleet, where several, including Monarch, and Majahual, escape with Galactica following the destruction of the Colonies ("Miniseries").
