Maya Massar (born August 27, 1959) is an American actress who portrayed Helen Gast in the Caprica episode "Retribution". Born in Boston, Massachusetts, she holds dual citizenship in Canada and the United States.[production 1]

Massar studied theater, including Shakespeare, at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts in London.[commentary 1]

Massar has worked across multiple entertainment mediums including commercials, feature films, modeling, theater, and television.[production 2] Her film and television work includes The Uninvited (2009), The Cabin in the Woods (2011), and Caprica (2009).[production 1]

Her television work includes guest appearances on House, where she played the Asthma Mom in the series' pilot episode, and Supernatural, where she portrayed both Mara Griffith in "Death Takes a Holiday" and the Wicked Witch of the West in "Slumber Party."[production 3]

Notable film roles include Mother Buckner in The Cabin in the Woods (2011).[production 3]

Voice Acting

edit source

Massar provided the voice of Mama Murphy in the 2015 video game Fallout 4. Originally auditioned for a facial motion-capture role, the character was initially conceived as a 103-year-old drug addict with a Boston accent. Massar was considered for the role partly due to her authentic Boston-area background, which enabled her to perform a convincing Boston accent.[commentary 1]

The project operated under intense secrecy during production, with the game listed under a different name and all cast members required to maintain confidentiality until release. Massar was initially told only that the work would involve "vocally stressful" performance. Recording involved multiple sessions spanning several months, with extensive dialogue to accommodate the game's multiple player choice pathways. During development, the character evolved to be significantly younger than originally conceived.[commentary 1]

Personal Life

edit source

Massar was married to writer/director/producer David Massar until their divorce in 2014.[production 1] Through this marriage, she was connected to the Massar family, which included photographer Ivan Massar.[footnotes 1]

Massar holds a Master of Divinity degree and became an interfaith minister.[external 1] She operates through "Rev. Maya Massar Ministries, Mysteries & Magic," offering spiritual direction services, grief counseling, and support for life transitions.[external 2] She also serves as a hospice spiritual advisor at Community Health & Counseling Services Hospice.[external 1] Massar has been offering healing and spiritual guidance for over four decades, specializing in support for abuse survivors and death row inmates.[external 1] She is currently based in New Mexico.[production 2]
