Sometime during the Fall of the Twelve Colonies, the Cylons lead an attack on the Scorpion Fleet Shipyards. Utilizing numerous Raider squadrons armed with nuclear missiles, they destroy at least three battlestars and several support vessels during the assault.
Pegasus is docked at the shipyards and about to undergo a three-month systems overhaul when the attack occurs. In preparation for the refit all computer networks are shut down, leaving the battlestar largely unaffected by Cylon infiltration of the Command Navigation Program. As the attack occurs, Colonel Belzen reports that all computers are down and that the crew must perform all functions manually.
While tethered to its dock, Pegasus is swarmed by the Raiders and struck by several missiles. Fuel and ordnance ignites on the battlestar's hangar decks, leading to explosions that cause over 700 casualties. Subsequently, Admiral Cain orders the bow reverse thrusters to be fired and the ship tears itself free from the umbilicals of the burning shipyard.
With Pegasus's defenses down and two nuclear missile inbound, Cain orders a hasty departure. The CIC crew spins up the FTL drive and performs a blind jump on her orders. "Wherever. Anywhere. Just jump", Cain recounts to Commander Adama and President Roslin in a conversation shortly after Galactica is tracked down by Pegasus months later.
The blind jump is successful in that it allows Pegasus to escape the Cylons and avoid a collision with a celestial body (a considerable risk when jumping without predetermined coordinates). Additionally, their escape goes unnoticed because of electromagnetic interference from the nuclear detonations that disrupts Cylon DRADIS, masking the battlestar's jump as it flees ("Pegasus", "Razor").

- ↑ 1.0 1.1 In "Pegasus", Cain says "Five ships, two of them battlestars, they were destroyed right there." In "Razor" two battlestars can be clearly seen in the establishing shot of the shipyard, and two ships of Valkyrie's design are destroyed later. Together with the unknown vessel above Pegasus, this makes at least four initial losses, which makes it likely that Cain's comment is an estimate.
