Morris Chapdelaine is a Canadian actor, puppeteer, and producer who plays Reporter #2 in the Battlestar Galactica episode "Litmus". Born on June 1, 1970, he is based in Vancouver, British Columbia, and has worked across acting, puppeteering, and production in the Vancouver film and television industry.
Career
edit sourceChapdelaine studied drama arts at the University of Alberta and subsequently trained in producing through the Creative Producers Intensive program at the Canadian Film Centre.[external 1] After relocating to Vancouver, he established himself in the city's television and film community, accumulating credits as both a performer and a puppeteer across a range of genre productions.[commentary 1]
His appearance as Reporter #2 in the first-season Battlestar Galactica episode "Litmus" (2004) coincided with the early period of his Vancouver career. Around the same time, he began a multi-year association with the Stargate SG-1 and Stargate: Atlantis franchises, working both as an on-screen actor and as the lead puppeteer for the Asgard alien characters. On Stargate SG-1, he portrayed the recurring alien Tenat across six episodes between 2004 and 2007,[external 2] including "Prometheus Unbound" (Season 8) and "The Ties That Bind" and "Company of Thieves" (Seasons 9–10).[external 3][external 4]
Puppetry work
edit source
As lead puppeteer on the Stargate franchise, Chapdelaine operated the mouth and jaw of the Asgard puppet figures and delivered the characters' dialogue on set opposite the principal cast. He was part of a four-person team responsible for animating each Asgard — covering the eyes, brows, head, arms, and body in addition to the mouth — and was given rehearsal days to develop distinct physical characteristics for individual characters.[commentary 2] He served as the primary puppeteer for the Asgard characters Thor, Kvasir, and Hermiod, and also voiced the characters on set. His background in voice-over work made the role a natural extension of his acting career.[commentary 3] His connection to the Asgard puppetry came through special effects make-up artist Todd Masters, with whom he had collaborated on earlier productions.[commentary 4] On Stargate: Atlantis, he performed the Asgard Hermiod, a technician assigned to the Daedalus, describing the character as a younger and more assertive variant of Thor.[commentary 5]
His other on-screen acting credits from this period include Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem (2007) and The Day the Earth Stood Still (2008), as well as the television series Falling Skies (2011).[external 5] He also worked as prosthetic animatronic operator on multiple Stargate SG-1 episodes, including "200" and "Camelot".[external 6]
Earlier in his career, prior to his Vancouver period, he had begun work in theatre and noted a stage background as foundational to his approach to both acting and puppetry.[commentary 6] He also noted that he produced one of the earliest Canadian web series, the 2001 production West of Denman, which subsequently aired nationally on OutTV.[external 7]
Producing career
edit sourceChapdelaine transitioned into television and film production during the mid-2000s, working across both documentary and scripted genres. In 2009, he co-founded the production company Big Gay Movie with filmmaker Bob Christie while producing their first feature documentary, Beyond Gay: The Politics of Pride.[external 8] The film screened at over forty festivals and won ten awards, and was broadcast on Super Channel in Canada and Showtime in the United States.[external 9]
He subsequently produced scripted television for Nomadic Pictures, serving as a producer on the Syfy/Netflix horror series Van Helsing across all five seasons (2016–2021),[external 10] and on the Netflix series The Order (2019–2020) and Wu Assassins (2019).[external 11] He also produced the Netflix limited series The I-Land (2019) and the supernatural series The Imperfects.[external 12]
In 2021, Big Gay Movie partnered with Border2Border Entertainment on the documentary feature Pat Rocco Dared, on which Chapdelaine served as both producer and director.[external 13]
