Sometime during the Fall of the Twelve Colonies, the Cylons lead an attack on the Scorpion Fleet Shipyards. Utilizing numerous Raider squadrons armed with nuclear missiles, they destroy at least three battlestars and several support vessels.
Pegasus is docked at the shipyards, and about to undergo a three-month systems overhaul, when the attack occurs. In preparation for the refit, all computer networks are shut down, leaving the battlestar largely unaffected by Cylon infiltration of the Command Navigation Program. As the attack occurs, Colonel Belzen reports that all computers are down and that the crew must perform all functions manually.
While tethered to its dock, Pegasus is swarmed by Raiders and struck by several missiles. Fuel and ordnance ignites on the battlestar's hangar decks, leading to explosions that cause over 700 casualties. Subsequently, Admiral Cain orders the bow reverse thrusters to be fired and the ship tears itself free from the umbilicals of the burning shipyard.
With Pegasus' defenses still down, and two nuclear missile inbound, Cain determines that a hasty departure is their only means of survival. She orders the CIC crew to spin up the FTL drive, and to perform a blind jump on her command. "Wherever. Anywhere. Just jump", Cain recounts to Commander Adama and President Roslin in a conversation shortly after Galactica is tracked down by Pegasus, several months later.
Cain's blind jump is a success primarily because Pegasus escapes the Cylons, but also because the ship avoids colliding with a celestial body - an event not unlikely when jumping without predetermined coordinates. Additionally (and ironically), the very weapons meant to destroy them aid Cain and her crew in making their escape; nuclear detonations occurring throughout the shipyard create bursts of electromagnetic radiation that interfere with Cylon DRADIS, masking the battlestar's jump as it flees and fooling the Cylons into believing that the ship is destroyed ("Pegasus", "Razor").
