In the official Syfy.com podcast for "Blowback", Universal Cable Productions executive Tom Lieber and actress Magda Apanowicz (Lacy Rand) offer a behind-the-scenes look at the fourteenth episode of Caprica. They discuss the episode's intense, Battlestar Galactica-inspired tone, the introduction of new characters on Gemenon, and the filming of the space travel sequences. Apanowicz shares her experiences working with director Omar Madha and the emotional challenges of portraying Lacy Rand's harrowing STO test. The commentary also reveals key plot decisions, such as the identity of the STO mole inside the GDD, and culminates with a discussion of the shocking final scene revealing the STO's use of a Cylon as an enforcer.
Tom Lieber: Hi, this is the podcast for Caprica episode 114. This is Tom Lieber. I'm director of development at Universal Cable Productions, a studio that produces Caprica. And I am joined by Miss Lacy Rand herself. [1]
Magda Apanowicz: Hi, Magda Apanowicz. And we are sitting here watching Caprica episode 14 with you. [2]
Tom Lieber: We're going to do the commentary because David Eick has the flu, so he couldn't be here for it. Okay, and so now we are into the episode right now. [3]
Magda Apanowicz: You know the thing about this episode is when I was reading the script, there were so many special effects, so I could only somewhat imagine what it was going to look like, and I'm very excited to see what it actually ends up being like. [4]
Tom Lieber: Yeah, so this is the spaceport on Gemenon. Lacy has now arrived on Gemenon. She's getting a connecting flight to Oranu, where the STO training camp is. And this is a new character we're introducing, Odin, played by Ryan Kennedy. [5]
Magda Apanowicz: Who is a very good Vancouver actor. [6]
Tom Lieber: He actually was in an episode of Psych. [7]
Magda Apanowicz: Was he? [8]
Tom Lieber: Yeah, he was in Psych. He played like a spoiled rich guy. [9]
Magda Apanowicz: I think he's on Hellcats too right now. [10]
Tom Lieber: Oh, is he? [11]
Magda Apanowicz: So yeah, when I heard we cast him, I'm like, oh, I know that guy. And this is a man that I love so much. One of the greatest men I've ever been on screen with, I feel like. Ryan Robbins. [12]
Tom Lieber: Yeah, Ryan Robbins is the best. Ryan Robbins is basically on every show I've ever worked on. He played two roles on Battlestar. He was the old man at the very beginning that Number Six kisses. He was in a lot of makeup. He was Connor. He was on Psych as a janitor. He was on... Was he on Bionic Woman? I can't remember if he did... [13]
Magda Apanowicz: You were. [14]
Tom Lieber: I was. [15]
Magda Apanowicz: You were Heaven Von Fleet. [16]
Tom Lieber: Yeah. [17]
Magda Apanowicz: Canadian. Rich Canadian girl. My character was actually Canadian. I was like, yeah. [18]
Tom Lieber: This is another kid I love that he's going to have this great scene coming up. Calum Worthy. [19]
Magda Apanowicz: Uh-huh. I'm absolutely in love with him. I think he's an amazing actor. [20]
Tom Lieber: Which one does he play? [21]
Magda Apanowicz: He's the redhead. Ginger, he is so ridiculously talented. That kid has an amazing future. And then what was that girl character's name? Devandra? [sic] It was a really cool name. [22]
Tom Lieber: I forget what her character's name was, though. [23]
Magda Apanowicz: She's a great actress, too. Everyone in this episode is very great. [24]
Tom Lieber: Yeah, I remember when Kevin Murphy pitched us this episode, we were kind of floored by it. Because it really is evocative of Battlestar in all the best ways. You know, there's great tension. There's space battles. [25]
Magda Apanowicz: I mean, honestly, weren't you guys a little worried about it, though? Were you worried about it? [26]
Tom Lieber: No, we were always really excited about this episode. [27]
Magda Apanowicz: Were you? [28]
Tom Lieber: Yeah. I mean, I think there's, you know, Lacy is, what, 16, 17? So there is something about children in trouble, but it's dealt with in a way in which the underdogs, you know, really kind of empower themselves. That we were always really excited about this episode. We were excited about introducing a new love interest for Lacy because, you know, Keon died a couple episodes ago. And, you know. [29]
Magda Apanowicz: And this is a different kind of love, like a more grown up kind of, I think, like interest in someone. The other one, I think, was very like schoolyard crush. Yeah. And this one seems a little older, more dangerous for her. Yeah. Oh, that's cool. See, because when I was looking up, I was looking up into nothing. Imagining what that might look like in the future. [30]
Tom Lieber: Yeah, there are the pirates. Lacy can see them coming. [31]
Magda Apanowicz: It does remind me a lot of BSG. [32]
Tom Lieber: And I remember Omar, Omar Madha directed this episode. And he is amazing. [33]
Magda Apanowicz: Love Omar. He's really great. [34]
Tom Lieber: And he employed a lot of old school Star Trek techniques in this. [35]
Magda Apanowicz: Awesome. [36]
Tom Lieber: Where it was like one, two, three, everybody shake. And everyone would shake to the left. And then everyone would shake to the right. And, you know, the classic ways work. And mixing that with the CGI kind of gives it a really cool, scary vibe. [37]
Magda Apanowicz: I thought he was a really good director. He had an interesting life. He's from England. He's done a lot of episodes of British TV. [38]
Tom Lieber: And I think this was his first episode of US TV. [39]
Magda Apanowicz: I think so, yeah. The thing I liked working with him, because it was such an intense episode, that I don't know, he was one of those directors that make me feel so safe just losing my shit. You know what I mean? [40]
Tom Lieber: But you have to lose your shit in this episode. [41]
Magda Apanowicz: Yeah, and that's such a rare thing to find such safety in a director. [42]
Tom Lieber: And now by this point we're deep into Amanda's arc where she's now been accepted into Clarice's home with all of her husbands and wives. But she's still spying on her and trying to find that smoking gun to connect her to the STO so that Durham can bring them all down. But unfortunately, you know, Mar-Beth here is very suspicious and Mar-Beth is very sharp. [43]
Magda Apanowicz: Luckily, Amanda is a good liar. [44]
Tom Lieber: And she knows that Mar-Beth is probably suspicious of Clarice as well, and so she plays on Mar-Beth's insecurities about Clarice's drug use. [45]
Magda Apanowicz: Sneaky, sneaky. [46]
Tom Lieber: Shit's got caught. Amanda knows she got away with it. [47]
Magda Apanowicz: That'd be really scary. You're really deep down in the rabbit hole in that situation. [48]
Tom Lieber: And Clarice is on the phone with her handler from the STO. We eventually find out who the handler is, right? Find out right now. Do you remember who it is? [49]
Magda Apanowicz: I think I do. I think I do. I don't want to say until we see. [50]
Tom Lieber: Who do you think it is? [51]
Magda Apanowicz: Is it Durham's boss? [52]
Tom Lieber: Yes, it is. It is Gara Singh from the Global Defense Department, which explains why he's been so against Durham investigating Clarice. [53]
Magda Apanowicz: Right. What is his... Why is he on this side? What's his motive? [54]
Tom Lieber: He's a monotheist. He's a terrorist. And he's under, you know, deep undercover with the GDD. You know the gag reel that we did for Caprica? [55]
Magda Apanowicz: Yeah, when he can't get it out of the bag. Yeah, that's every time I see that, he couldn't get it out of the bag. [56]
Tom Lieber: You know, originally when Jane Espenson had pitched the season, the mole was originally going to be Youngblood, the partner, the blonde woman, the really tall blonde woman. [57]
Magda Apanowicz: Oh, but... [58]
Tom Lieber: And they decided that, I think it was Ron or David, thought that was too obvious that it would be the partner. So they changed it very early on from Youngblood to Singh. So if you go back and re-watch those first ten episodes, there are some visual clues there that Singh, you know, is serving another master. [59]
Magda Apanowicz: I love this kind of sequence. That you go back and you're like, ah. [60]
Tom Lieber: He's alive! [61]
Magda Apanowicz: How is he alive? What is going on? [62]
Tom Lieber: Such a great what the fuck moment. [63]
Magda Apanowicz: Totally. You start beating the shit out of someone thinking that you're gonna die, and then a surprise, just a test. [64]
Tom Lieber: I mean, it's not really a funny test. [65]
Magda Apanowicz: No, but they're seeing everyone who we thought was dead is back. [66]
Tom Lieber: But it's a fascinating way that STO, how they weed out who's a true believer. [67]
Magda Apanowicz: That's really disturbing. [68]
Tom Lieber: Really disturbing. But they're not nice people. [69]
Magda Apanowicz: No. My favorite part is the punishment. [70]
Tom Lieber: Yeah. [71]
Magda Apanowicz: You know what I realized? I get to see something really cool at the end of this episode. [72]
Tom Lieber: Yes, you do. [73]
Magda Apanowicz: Oh my god. I'm so excited right now. Oh my god. Oh, this is happening. Woo! I feel like I'm on a rollercoaster ride. [74]
Tom Lieber: That's the end of the act. [75]
Magda Apanowicz: Woo-hoo. [76]
Tom Lieber: And we're back. And we're back on Gemenon. That is Gemenon. [77]
Magda Apanowicz: That's a really good— [78]
Tom Lieber: My assistant Daniel is in here, and he's gasping because he's so horrified by that ending in a good way. Did you like it, Daniel? He's got a lot of questions. So don't worry. Sasha's coming in. We're going to watch the next one. So then it'll answer some of them. That was episode 14. Thank you guys so much for joining us. [79]
Magda Apanowicz: That was so fun. [80]
Tom Lieber: Sorry about the fire drill. The stop and go. [81]
Magda Apanowicz: Stop and go. Stop and go. [82]
Tom Lieber: But it's a great season, and it continues to get better from here. Keep watching. [83]
Magda Apanowicz: And I have nothing else to say. [84]
Tom Lieber: You have a lot to say. [85]
Magda Apanowicz: I have a lot to say. I just don't know what to say. Oh! Look, this is me. That's my back. [86]
Tom Lieber: You know, in this scene, we have to establish that it's been a few weeks, right? [87]
Magda Apanowicz: Yes. [88]
Tom Lieber: That's why your hair is up. [89]
Magda Apanowicz: I know. It's a continuity thing, so I look older. [90]
Tom Lieber: You look older. You look more established. [91]
Magda Apanowicz: I look like I've been there for a while. [92]
Tom Lieber: Exactly. And you've been working with hair and makeup and they showed you how to put your hair in a ponytail. [93]
Magda Apanowicz: Yes. I figured it out. I just never did it before. [94]
Tom Lieber: What's so amazing about this episode is that Lacy was, up until now, really a follower. And this is when she really comes into her own and she's a leader. [95]
Magda Apanowicz: Yes. It's my favorite episode. [96]
Tom Lieber: Yeah. It's great. [97]
Magda Apanowicz: It's my favorite episode for my character, I feel like. [98]
Tom Lieber: That you find out she's a badass. [99]
Magda Apanowicz: Yeah. I get to... she's very broken down and beaten, but at the same time, finds this strength through her weakness. [100]
Tom Lieber: Yes. [101]
Magda Apanowicz: I really like it. [102]
Tom Lieber: We're watching it on mute, so we can't hear. [103]
Magda Apanowicz: Oh, yeah. So, this is a part where I find my own—I do my own thing. I think that's what's cool about my character is she does start to form her own opinions and her own way of living. And I think that's part of—everyone should do that. Everyone should be themselves. [104]
Tom Lieber: Yes. [105]
Magda Apanowicz: Even if it's the wrong way. [106]
Tom Lieber: Stay in school. [107]
Magda Apanowicz: Just kidding. I dropped out. Don't listen to me. No, I actually graduated. [108]
Tom Lieber: A PSA from Syfy. [109]
Magda Apanowicz: Yeah, from me. [110]
Tom Lieber: And these two who had such a strange relationship at the beginning, now they're so bonded. [111]
Magda Apanowicz: I love that. [112]
Tom Lieber: Because really, Duram is the thing that's keeping her alive and keeping her undercover. And she needs him now, and he needs her, because without her, his case against Clarice was gone. [113]
Magda Apanowicz: Nothing, yeah. It's hard. You have to really cater to her and really just make her trust you and be like, "You're gonna be okay. Now, please tell me anything you can." [114]
Tom Lieber: Omar shot a lot of it, because your arc is so claustrophobic, you'll see a lot of scenes like this, they're shot in the forest to kind of balance it out. [115]
Magda Apanowicz: That's really cool. [116]
Tom Lieber: And to give it a sense of scope. [117]
Magda Apanowicz: That's really cool. I feel like that's what makes a really smart director. [118]
Tom Lieber: Yeah. [119]
Magda Apanowicz: Those kind of little ads. So do we know? We know. Yes, okay. We just found out when we were gabbing about it. [120]
Tom Lieber: Hey, Alphie, what's the good word? [121]
Magda Apanowicz: He parked his vest outside. [122]
Tom Lieber: Brian has been in, if you look at shows that have shot in Vancouver, like the classic shows like Supernatural, Battlestar, Caprica, X-Files, like going back, Brian has been on all of them. Because he's so good. And he's just such a steady go-to actor. He can do anything. He can play any role. [123]
Magda Apanowicz: That you need, definitely. He's like Old Yeller. [124]
Tom Lieber: He is. He's the Old Yeller of Vancouver. [125]
Magda Apanowicz: Old Faithful. [126]
Tom Lieber: He's not Old Faithful. [127]
Magda Apanowicz: No? [128]
Tom Lieber: He's not a geyser. [129]
Magda Apanowicz: I'm sorry. Yeah, that was kind of a bad reference. Old Yeller was... [130]
Tom Lieber: Greystone house. [131]
Magda Apanowicz: Dun, dun, dun. [132]
Tom Lieber: And the dust has been... [133]
Magda Apanowicz: Collecting? [134]
Tom Lieber: Yeah, except for there's fingerprints on it, so he knows something's up. [135]
Magda Apanowicz: Uh-oh. [136]
Tom Lieber: The dust has been disturbed. Was it him that couldn't get this out? [137]
Magda Apanowicz: No, it was Singh. [138]
Tom Lieber: It was Singh. Singh is the one who touched the dust, so he knows. Now, this is when he suspects that there's a mole at the GDD. [139]
Magda Apanowicz: He's a smart guy. [140]
Tom Lieber: Yeah, toying with the Greystone trial. [141]
Magda Apanowicz: Nothing's been given to him easily, but he still figures it out. [142]
Tom Lieber: Oh, yeah. [143]
Magda Apanowicz: You know what I mean? [144]
Tom Lieber: And he has suspenders. [145]
Magda Apanowicz: I want suspenders. But I don't think I can pull off suspenders. [146]
Tom Lieber: If you call Glenn, she can probably give you those suspenders. [147]
Magda Apanowicz: Yeah, but I don't think I can pull off suspenders. [148]
Tom Lieber: You can. [149]
Magda Apanowicz: With a white shirt, I mean. [150]
Tom Lieber: Yeah, I think you can. [151]
Magda Apanowicz: I feel like I have the personality. I just don't know. I don't know. It's epic life changer. [152]
Tom Lieber: Anyone listening to this podcast, tweet to Magda, @officialmagdaa, and tell her if you think she can pull off suspenders. [153]
Magda Apanowicz: Please tell me. [154]
Tom Lieber: We'll let the people decide. [155]
Magda Apanowicz: Yes. Let my people go. [156]
Tom Lieber: Jane Espenson! Woo! Kevin Murphy! Woo! [157]
Magda Apanowicz: I love those people. A lot. [158]
Tom Lieber: This is Kevin's first episode that he wrote. [159]
Magda Apanowicz: This is his first episode? [160]
Tom Lieber: Yeah. [161]
Magda Apanowicz: Oh, this is the best part. Sorry, guys. We're probably going to have to pause because there's a fire alarm test today for each floor. And it turned out right now is the time we have to go. So we're going to put this on pause. Oh, there's directed by Omar Madha. He's great. So we're going to put this on pause and come back once we make sure our building isn't burning down. [162]
Tom Lieber: Daniel is showing the Adama brothers footage that the Cylons were being smuggled to offworld. And obviously Sam is devastated, and Sasha plays this brilliantly. And Joseph kind of knows about it, and it's pretty fucked up. And this scene lays the groundwork for what you're going to see next week in the episode 115. We referred to it internally as Adamarama, because it's the all-Adama episode. I don't even think you're in that one. [163]
Magda Apanowicz: No. [164]
Tom Lieber: It's pretty much all Adama all the time next week. [165]
Magda Apanowicz: I think I went skiing that weekend. [166]
Tom Lieber: Oh, look at you, lady of leisure. And this is kind of the impetus for the Adamarama episode. [167]
Magda Apanowicz: Oh, he's so gorgeous on the screen. You're going to ask me which one? All three of them. It's not an unattractive cast. [168]
Tom Lieber: No, it's not unattractive. You're self-included. [169]
Magda Apanowicz: Thank you. Well, you know, you've got to thank my mom and the bunny rabbit. [170]
Tom Lieber: What? [171]
Magda Apanowicz: He had sex with a bunny rabbit. [172]
Tom Lieber: She did? I could see that. [173]
Magda Apanowicz: I'm so cute. [174]
Tom Lieber: So your dad, who you referred to earlier on the podcast, is a bunny rabbit. [175]
Magda Apanowicz: He is. He was the milkman. Bunny rabbit milkman. [176]
Tom Lieber: I see. [177]
Magda Apanowicz: She fell for him. [178]
Tom Lieber: And you know when Sam Adama lapses into Tauron, that he means business. And Tauron, which is, it's ancient Greek. Did you know that? [179]
Magda Apanowicz: So do they have to learn ancient Greek? [180]
Tom Lieber: It's Homeric Greek. I'm sorry. Apparently that's different. We had a professor, I think at University of British Columbia, who would, we'd tell them what we wanted to say, and he'd translate it to Homeric Greek, which sounds very different from normal Greek, apparently. It sounds like Klingon, actually, but it's a real language. [181]
Magda Apanowicz: So it's almost like the Latin or Greek kind of thing? [182]
Tom Lieber: Kind of, yeah. And it fits in with the Battlestar mythology. [183]
Magda Apanowicz: Definitely. [184]
Tom Lieber: You know, with ancient languages and root languages. [185]
Magda Apanowicz: I love when they speak Tauron. My favorite line to this day is, frackin' dirt eater. [186]
Tom Lieber: Yeah. Next week's episode is called "Dirt Eater". [187]
Magda Apanowicz: Is it really? [188]
Tom Lieber: It is. [189]
Magda Apanowicz: Awesome. [190]
Tom Lieber: That's the official name. Unofficially, it's called Adamarama. [191]
Magda Apanowicz: I like both names. They work. A.K.A. Adamarama. [192]
Tom Lieber: A.K.A. F.K.A., formerly known as Adamarama. [193]
Magda Apanowicz: F.K.A. [194]
Tom Lieber: So Lacy kind of very quickly forms a posse. [195]
Magda Apanowicz: She does. She has more friends than I do in my real life. It's kind of sad. [196]
Tom Lieber: If I remember right, when we shot this episode, you and Ryan Kennedy were going through Battlestar, right? Weren't you showing him Battlestar? [197]
Magda Apanowicz: Yeah. And you were like binging on it. We were, I mean, every second, anytime we went to our trailers, we would be watching Battlestar, even if it was for like five minutes, ten minutes. We finally got through the whole season. It was awesome. And he was like, oh my God, this is what I've been missing. I'm like, I know, that was my same reaction. I was like, oh my God, this is what I've been missing. [198]
Tom Lieber: And then you guys get to be in this very Battlestar-ish episode. [199]
Magda Apanowicz: I mean, right? Right? Yeah. I was pretty stoked. This felt like an homage for me. Yeah. To BSG. I felt very honored. I mean, I really love BSG. It's one of those shows like Buffy that I can just come home and if I'm having a hard time, put it on. [200]
Tom Lieber: Who's your favorite in Battlestar? [201]
Magda Apanowicz: Obviously, Starbuck. She's a badass. And she's hot. Well, she's a badass. [202]
Tom Lieber: Lacy kind of channels a little Starbuck in this episode. [203]
Magda Apanowicz: You know, I feel like she does a little. I would take that as a compliment because she's pretty rad. [204]
Tom Lieber: And you worked with her on Bionic Woman? [205]
Magda Apanowicz: Yes, I did. It's actually before I ever really heard of BSG. I remember someone asking Katie about Season 5 or something about BSG. I was like, what is this BSG? I keep hearing of. And my friends kept telling me that I love this show. I love this show. And I guess I was kind of skeptical. And I'm like, why am I being skeptical? I ended up watching it and I loved it. Because they were like, you need to get on this Battlestar Galactica show. It's so good. [206]
Tom Lieber: Yeah. [207]
Magda Apanowicz: Oh, and this is the guy that you love, right? [208]
Tom Lieber: Oh, Calum. [209]
Magda Apanowicz: I mean, I think we were all literally crying when he was doing this. Not because we had to be acting, but it was so hard to listen to him. [210]
Tom Lieber: And so he was willing to renounce his god, right? [211]
Magda Apanowicz: Yes. He was willing to do anything to not die. God, it makes me want to cry right now. [212]
Tom Lieber: I remember Omar at the end of it was clapping. He's like, yes, yes. [213]
Magda Apanowicz: And everyone's like, you are sick, Omar. [214]
Tom Lieber: That's the end of the act. [215]
Magda Apanowicz: And now we're back at the GDD. [216]
Tom Lieber: Duram. [217]
Magda Apanowicz: I know. It's ridiculous. [218]
Tom Lieber: And here's the brilliance in editing here. We watched the sequence to see just how brilliantly it's edited for, you know, dramatic effect and tension. [219]
Magda Apanowicz: It's disturbing. [220]
Tom Lieber: Polly Walker with a knife. Nothing like it. [221]
Magda Apanowicz: I like her ring. Feels like she's going to go into battle with the knife and the ring. I'm a child, I know. [222]
Tom Lieber: No. Yeah, it's like a lioness hunting her prey. [223]
Magda Apanowicz: Definitely. But whammo. What? She's going after Mar-Beth. No, she has a baby, no. [224]
Tom Lieber: Clarice doesn't care about that. [225]
Magda Apanowicz: No, she doesn't. It's God's choice. Damn, that's dramatic. Oh god, that's gross. You know, I know it's pretend, but I still have troubles watching the loads of blood. What? Oh, okay. That was like the first time I've seen this. What has she done? Don't let the babies see her. I see her. Blood on her hands. Out, damn spot. Out, I say. [226]
Tom Lieber: That sequence gives me the chills. [227]
Magda Apanowicz: That's really sad. [228]
Tom Lieber: You just see how far Clarice has kind of gone over the... Like, she's a full-fledged zealot now. [229]
Magda Apanowicz: Yeah, definitely. Like, there's no limitations. If she thinks that that's God's word, that that's, you know, his will, she will do it. [230]
Tom Lieber: Oh, absolutely. And Amanda got her tech. So she can now spy. [231]
Magda Apanowicz: This is a great scene in there. [232]
Tom Lieber: You know, Singh has kind of, in a way, outed himself to Durham. [233]
Magda Apanowicz: Yeah, in a beautiful way. [234]
Tom Lieber: But Durham, in his brilliance, pretends that his informant is dead. So now Amanda's safe. [235]
Magda Apanowicz: Love it. [236]
Tom Lieber: And then what was that girl character's name? Devandra? It was a really cool name. I forget what her character's name was, though. [237]
Magda Apanowicz: She's a great actress, too. Everyone in this episode is very great. [238]
Tom Lieber: Yeah, I remember when Kevin Murphy pitched us this episode, we were kind of floored by it. Because it really is evocative of Battlestar in all the best ways. You know, there's great tension. There's space battles. [239]
Magda Apanowicz: I mean, honestly, weren't you guys a little worried about it, though? Were you worried about it? [240]
Tom Lieber: No, we were always really excited about this episode. [241]
Magda Apanowicz: Were you? [242]
Tom Lieber: Yeah, there are the pirates. Lacy can see them coming. [245]
Magda Apanowicz: It does remind me a lot of BSG. [246]
Tom Lieber: And I remember Omar, Omar Madha directed this episode. And he is amazing. [247]
Magda Apanowicz: Love Omar. He's really great. [248]
Tom Lieber: And he employed a lot of old school Star Trek techniques in this. [249]
Magda Apanowicz: Awesome. [250]
Tom Lieber: Where it was like one, two, three, everybody shake. And everyone would shake to the left. And then everyone would shake to the right. And, you know, the classic ways work. And mixing that with the CGI kind of gives it a really cool, scary vibe. [251]
Magda Apanowicz: I thought he was a really good director. He had an interesting life. He's from England. He's done a lot of episodes of British TV. [252]
Tom Lieber: And I think this was his first episode of US TV. [253]
Magda Apanowicz: I think so, yeah. The thing I liked working with him, because it was such an intense episode, that I don't know, he was one of those directors that make me feel so safe just losing my shit. You know what I mean? [254]
Tom Lieber: But you have to lose your shit in this episode. [255]
Magda Apanowicz: Yeah, and that's such a rare thing to find such safety in a director. [256]
Magda Apanowicz: Luckily, Amanda is a good liar. [258]
Tom Lieber: And she knows that Mar-Beth is probably suspicious of Clarice as well, and so she plays on Mar-Beth's insecurities about Clarice's drug use. [259]
Magda Apanowicz: Sneaky, sneaky. [260]
Tom Lieber: Shit's got caught. Amanda knows she got away with it. [261]
Magda Apanowicz: That'd be really scary. You're really deep down in the rabbit hole in that situation. [262]
Tom Lieber: And Clarice is on the phone with her handler from the STO. We eventually find out who the handler is, right? Find out right now. Do you remember who it is? [263]
Magda Apanowicz: I think I do. I think I do. I don't want to say until we see. [264]
Tom Lieber: Who do you think it is? [265]
Magda Apanowicz: Is it Durham's boss? [266]
Tom Lieber: Yes, it is. It is Gara Singh from the Global Defense Department, which explains why he's been so against Durham investigating Clarice. [267]
Magda Apanowicz: Right. What is his... Why is he on this side? What's his motive? [268]
Tom Lieber: He's a monotheist. He's a terrorist. And he's under, you know, deep undercover with the GDD. You know the gag reel that we did for Caprica? [269]
Magda Apanowicz: Yeah, when he can't get it out of the bag. Yeah, that's every time I see that, he couldn't get it out of the bag. [270]
Tom Lieber: You know, originally when Jane had pitched the season, the mole was originally going to be Youngblood, the partner, the blonde woman, the really tall blonde woman. [271]
Magda Apanowicz: Oh, but... [272]
Magda Apanowicz: I love this kind of sequence. That you go back and you're like, ah. [274]
Tom Lieber: He's alive! [275]
Magda Apanowicz: How is he alive? What is going on? [276]
Tom Lieber: Such a great what the fuck moment. [277]
Magda Apanowicz: Totally. You start beating the shit out of someone thinking that you're gonna die, and then a surprise, just a test. [278]
Tom Lieber: I mean, it's not really a funny test. [279]
Magda Apanowicz: No, but they're seeing everyone who we thought was dead is back. [280]
Tom Lieber: But it's a fascinating way that STO, how they weed out who's a true believer. [281]
Magda Apanowicz: That's really disturbing. [282]
Tom Lieber: Really disturbing. But they're not nice people. [283]
Magda Apanowicz: No. My favorite part is the punishment. [284]
Tom Lieber: Yeah. [285]
Magda Apanowicz: You know what I realized? I get to see something really cool at the end of this episode. [286]
Tom Lieber: Yes, you do. [287]
Magda Apanowicz: Oh my god. I'm so excited right now. Oh my god. Oh, this is happening. Woo! I feel like I'm on a rollercoaster ride. [288]
Tom Lieber: That's the end of the act. [289]
Magda Apanowicz: Woo-hoo. [290]
Tom Lieber: And we're back. And we're back on Gemenon. That is Gemenon. [291]
Magda Apanowicz: That's a really good... Oh, hey, what up? [292]
Tom Lieber: And here we are at the banquet hall on Gemenon. This was all entirely green screen except for, obviously, the floor and those two posts in the railing. Everything else is fake. [293]
Magda Apanowicz: They were green. And the fire was real. Oh, whoa, that's so cool. [294]
Tom Lieber: And Lacy is kind of quickly becoming a rising star because of her actions on that plane. They've taken notice of her. Which is both a good thing and a bad thing, that they've taken notice of her. The brightest and best are always the most likely to cause problems. [295]
Magda Apanowicz: Or, you know, the person that has the most power, usually people let them rise, and then they want to break them down. [296]
Tom Lieber: Well, and as they said a couple episodes ago, when Clarice was Lacy ten years ago, Clarice was the brightest and best. And now she's quite the renegade. So Lacy has quite a lot to overcome here on Gemenon. [297]
Magda Apanowicz: Yeah, she does, but she doesn't know it. She doesn't know it. And she does, luckily she has a new buddy. Ooh, I like this part. [298]
Tom Lieber: This is my favorite scene in this episode, I have to say, just because of the cool reveal that happens. [299]
Magda Apanowicz: It is. [300]
Tom Lieber: And Odin really knows that something's up. And wants to teach Lacy about the real world. And about who these people are. [301]
Magda Apanowicz: Open your eyes a little more. Yeah. Don't be so naive about things. Just because something looks great doesn't mean it is. [302]
Tom Lieber: It's everyone who failed the test. Including your red-headed guy. [303]
Magda Apanowicz: Man, kill him. See? No. No. It's like, who's shooting him? Who was shooting him? Diego? Is it the mother? Is it Reikle? Who? Who? Who was it? How do you need to know? Lacy needs to know too. Yeah, she does. That's why she stuck around. What? It's a Cylon. That's awesome. [304]
Tom Lieber: And that's the end of the episode. [305]
Magda Apanowicz: That was really cool. [306]
Magda Apanowicz: That was so fun. [308]
Tom Lieber: Sorry about the fire drill. The stop and go. [309]
Magda Apanowicz: Stop and go. Stop and go. [310]
Tom Lieber: But it's a great season, and it continues to get better from here. [311]
