Ernest "Ernie" Jackson is a Canadian stunt performer, fight choreographer, second unit director, and actor. He appeared uncredited as a bar patron who brawls with Kara Thrace aboard Cloud 9 in the Re-imagined Series episode "Colonial Day,"[external 1] and was credited as Soldier #1 (under his full name, Ernest Jackson) in Razor.[external 2]

A member of Stunts Canada and the Directors Guild of Canada, Jackson has built a career spanning more than three decades in the Vancouver film industry, working as a stunt performer, stunt coordinator, fight choreographer, and second unit director on a wide range of film and television productions.[external 3]

Career

edit

Jackson trained extensively in martial arts and competitive kickboxing, earning the WKA Canadian Middleweight Kickboxing Championship, which he held from 1984 to 1987, along with the Pacific Northwest Light Heavyweight Kickboxing Championship and the BC Super Middleweight Kickboxing Championship. He also attained a world ranking with the World Kickboxing Association from 1982 to 1987 and holds a Black Sash instructor certification in Kung Fu.[external 4]

His film stunt career dates to the late 1980s, with early credits including Bird on a Wire (1990), The Long Kiss Goodnight (1996), and Timecop (1994).[external 5] He has performed stunts on numerous high-profile productions filmed in British Columbia, including Romeo + Juliet (1996), Fear (1996), X2: X-Men United (2003), Fantastic Four (2005), X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009), Rise of the Planet of the Apes (2011), Pacific Rim (2013), Godzilla (2014), and The Last of Us (2023–2025).[external 6][external 7]

Jackson has doubled for numerous prominent actors over the course of his career, including Idris Elba, Ice Cube, Wesley Snipes, Cuba Gooding Jr., Harold Perrineau, Giancarlo Esposito, and Mario Van Peebles, among others.[external 8]

Alongside his stunt performing work, Jackson has served as stunt coordinator on many productions. His television coordinating credits include Highlander: The Series, Andromeda, Blade: The Series, Smallville (seasons 7 and 8), the V pilot and first season, Wayward Pines (season 1), iZombie (seasons 1 through 4), Beyond (seasons 1 and 2), and the Mortal Kombat web series.[external 9] Feature film coordination credits include Homeward Bound II (1996), Duets (2000), Underworld: Evolution (2006), Trick 'r Treat (2007), The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn (2011, as assistant stunt coordinator), and Descendants (2015).[external 10]

Jackson also transitioned into second unit directing, with credits on productions including Andromeda, Blade: The Series, The L Word, iZombie, and Beyond.[external 11]

Awards and recognition

edit

Jackson received two nominations at the inaugural Taurus World Stunt Awards ceremony in 2001 for his stunt work in films released in 2000. He was nominated for Best Fire Work for Reindeer Games, in which he doubled Clarence Williams III in a full-body fire burn sequence set inside a casino—a stunt requiring him to burn while backing through a window and falling onto a car below.[external 12] He also received a nomination for Best Fight for Romeo Must Die, as part of a five-stunt-performer team involved in an extended bar fight sequence opposite Russell Wong.[external 13]

In 2012, Jackson was nominated for Best Stunt Coordination in a Feature Length Drama at the Leo Awards, British Columbia's film and television awards, for his work on Marilyn.[external 14]

Re-imagined Series

edit

Jackson appeared in two productions from the Re-imagined Series. In the first-season episode "Colonial Day," he appeared uncredited as a bar patron aboard the luxury liner Cloud 9 who engages in a fight with Lieutenant Kara "Starbuck" Thrace.[external 1]

Jackson returned to the franchise in "Razor" (2007), receiving a credited on-screen role as Soldier #1—a stunt acting part listed under his full name, Ernest Jackson.[external 2] Both appearances drew directly on his background as a fight choreographer and experienced stunt performer, consistent with his extensive work on Vancouver-based genre productions throughout the same period.
