Gale won the Genie Award — the Canadian equivalent of the Oscar — for Best Supporting Actor, for Last Wedding (2001). In 1998, he had been nominated for the Canadian Emmy-equivalent, the Gemini, for Best Performance by an Actor in a Featured Supporting Role in a Dramatic Program or Miniseries, for the 1997 telefilm Major Crime.
Gale received his stage training at the Royal Academy of Music and Drama in Glasgow, Scotland.
