William Adama is an officer in the Colonial Fleet. A veteran of the Cylon War, he serves aboard Galactica until his dismissal from the Colonial Fleet; he later returns to Galactica upon rejoining the Fleet as her commander (Battlestar Galactica 012, Battlestar Galactica: Season Zero, Battlestar Galactica: Origins 58).

Military career

Adama's military career begins at least six months prior to the end of the Cylon War, when he is offered assignment on the Argus (a stealth, black ops battlestar) by the admiralty, who are impressed by his flight academy records. He accepts, however a recon mission over a Cylon installation called "Trinity Base" ends badly, resulting in the capture of a Stealth Viper piloted by Lucky (with the pilot onboard) and the destruction of his own Stealth Viper. With his tour of duty on Argus is classified, his first official kill is recorded as occurring during Operation Raptor Talon, where he discovers a baseship where people are being experimented on by the Cylons in the creation of a hybrid, the evolutionary step between robotic Cylons and the humanoid biological form ("Razor", "Razor Flashbacks", Battlestar Galactica: Origins 5).

With the Armistice signed, the Cylons inform the Colonials of a rogue faction of Cylons called the "Annihilators"; Adama volunteers for this mission under the command of Galactica's new CAG, Captain Alexa "Pugnacious" Cain (Battlestar Galactica: Origins 5).

After being reinstated in the Colonial Fleet, Adama becomes the executive officer of Columbia under Admiral Julian DiMarco, his friend and mentor; Adama is later forced in a position to kill his former friend and mentor when DiMarco engages in a mad quest for vengeance against the Colonial government. However, Adama manages to get through to DiMarco, and despite assurances from Adama that things can be worked out, DiMarco spaces himself (Battlestar Galactica: Season Zero 06).

Personal life

During last days of the Cylon War, William Adama engages in a relationship with Lieutenant Jaycie McGavin. However, she dies as a result of injuries sustained in the explosion of her Raptor's console during the start of Operation Raptor Talon ("Razor", "Razor Flashbacks", Battlestar Galactica: Origins 5).

Roughly 38 years later, after Adama is assigned to Galactica's as her commander and the death of Zak Adama, his wife, Carolanne, divorces him (Battlestar Galactica: Season Zero 2).
