Lili Bordán (born March 12, 1982) is a Hungarian-American film and television actress who portrays Becca Kelly in Battlestar Galactica: Blood & Chrome.[external 1] Born in New York City to Hungarian actress Irén Bordán, she has established herself as a versatile performer across film, television, and theater productions. Her father escaped communist Hungary at age 19 and, after time in Vienna and Paris, established a successful French restaurant in Manhattan that became one of the city's most visited spots.[commentary 1]

Career

edit

Bordán attended Sarah Lawrence College, where she completed her degree in theater and 19th century western literature. She also studied with renowned acting coach Susan Batson before beginning her professional career.[external 2] After completing her studies, she moved to Hungary and became part of a children's theater troupe, later returning to the United States to join the Moth Theatre Company in Los Angeles.[external 3]

She began performing as a child, booking her first national commercial and short film at age six, with her mother coincidentally cast as her mother in both projects.[commentary 2] Growing up between two cultures, she spent summers in the Hungarian lakeside village of Felsôörs, where she would perform puppet shows with homemade puppets for neighborhood children and lead dress-up games with her cousins.[commentary 3]

Bordán began her television career in 2001 with a guest appearance on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. Her early film work included supporting roles in 8MM 2 (2005), Joy Division (2006), and leading roles in Cherry (2010) and A Love Affair of Sorts (2011).

On February 10, 2011, it was announced that Bordán would join the main cast of the military science fiction drama Battlestar Galactica: Blood & Chrome, portraying Dr. Becca Kelly, a former employee of Graystone Industries, the company that created the Cylon. The project was originally conceived as a back-door pilot for Syfy before becoming an online series split into 10 segments for Machinima, and eventually a television movie.[commentary 4]

Bordán was cast just one week before filming began, describing the experience as "the biggest thing I've ever done as an actor" and noting it was "a little daunting."[commentary 5] The production was filmed in 15 days in Vancouver using extensive green screen technology, with the cast receiving training in weapons handling and SWAT tactics for scenes involving Cylon territory infiltration.[production 1] Her character Dr. Becca Kelly is described as a war widow whose husband became a hero, exploring themes of propaganda and the reality behind wartime heroism.[commentary 6]

Bordán described being part of the Battlestar Galactica universe as "a great honor," noting that the production continues to play worldwide and generates fan appreciation.[commentary 7] She was not extensively familiar with the franchise before her casting, having been in Europe during much of the original series' run, and watched Caprica with the cast to understand the backstory before filming.[commentary 8]

Her performance in the Moth Theatre Company's production of David Hare's The Blue Room earned her a Scenie Award for "best featured actress in a drama or intimate play."[commentary 9] Her film Cherry, directed by Quinn Saunders, was selected for competition at the Karlovy Vary festival and later picked up at Cannes for distribution by Warner Brothers.[external 4]

Recent credits include roles in major productions such as Book Club (2018) alongside Diane Keaton, Jane Fonda, and Mary Steenburgen, and The Nun (2018).[external 5] She also appeared in The Martian (2015), where she described working with director Ridley Scott as an exhilarating experience despite her smaller role, noting she was made to feel important and was allowed to improvise creatively.[commentary 10] She also starred as Warner Bros. story editor Irene Lee in the biographical film Curtiz about Casablanca director Michael Curtiz, which she helped produce.[production 2]

Television appearances include recurring roles on Silent Witness and guest starring roles on ER, Westworld, Teen Wolf, and Hawaii Five-0.[external 6]

Personal Life

edit

Bordán is multilingual, speaking English, Hungarian, and French due to her multicultural background.[external 7] She maintains close ties with her mother, with whom she regularly exchanges notes about their respective acting careers in the US and Hungarian markets.[commentary 11] In addition to her acting career, she is a certified Autism Movement Therapist and has taught dance to children on the autism spectrum through the non-profit organization Guidance Autism since its inception in 2010.[external 8]

She has also ventured into directing and producing, writing, producing, and directing her first short film "One Night Only" while pregnant with her first daughter.[external 9] Regarding her approach to acting, Bordán has stated that she finds inspiration in "poetry, art, love, and creativity," and describes the film set as having "a magical amniotic fluid of sorts that surrounds a creative team of people who seek to tell a story together."[commentary 12] Bordán currently resides in New York City and is available for local hire in New York, Los Angeles, Atlanta, and Budapest.[external 10]
