Campbell Lane (July 15, 1935 – January 30, 2014) was a Canadian actor and voice performer who portrayed the Cylon First Hybrid in "Razor" and the "Razor Flashbacks." Born in Montreal, Quebec, he spent most of his career in Vancouver, British Columbia.

Early life

Lane was raised in Montreal, where he attended boarding school. During his final year of high school his family relocated to Vancouver, and he went on to attend the Royal Military College. He credited his interest in voice work to his mother.

Career

Lane began his professional life in radio. Around the age of 22 or 23 he joined the CBC, hosting a morning disc jockey show and performing in radio dramas. Working out of Vancouver and represented by the agency Lucas Talent, he moved into on-camera and voice work as the city's film and animation business grew.

His on-camera credits included supporting roles in the films Needful Things (1993), Dreamcatcher (2003), and Scary Movie 4 (2006). He also took guest roles on Vancouver-shot genre television, among them a magician on First Wave and a sheriff on the anthology western Dead Man's Gun.

Voice acting

For his first animated role, Skeletor in The New Adventures of He-Man, Lane drew on the Joker as inspiration. He later voiced the Predacon Rampage in Beast Wars: Transformers under director Sue Blu, developing the character's more sympathetic side over the course of the series. His other animation work included Mastermind in X-Men: Evolution and narration for the English-language broadcast of Mobile Suit Gundam Wing.

Lane also provided the voice of an alien species called the Bentusi in the 1999 computer game Homeworld, who, much like the Cylon Hybrid, were fused with their ships and fond of cryptic, allusive speeches. He returned to the role across the series, including Homeworld: Cataclysm (2000) and Homeworld 2 (2003).

Personal life

Lane was married to Diane Lane for 32 years. He died on January 30, 2014, in his 78th year, and his family directed memorial donations to the Richmond Hospital Foundation and the BC Lung Association.
